Hello Sports Fans, I’m Buddy Long. And this is the Thursday September 5th edition of Southern Maryland Sports.
Baltimore Ravens begin defense of their Super Bowl Crown in Denver Tonight!!!!!
The return of NFL Football begins tonight with a monster matchup featuring the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens against the Denver Broncos. It’s been almost 8 months since Baltimore took down the Broncos in a key Divisional Playoff game. And while the game was supposed to be played in Baltimore tonight, a conflict with the neighboring Orioles has the Ravens right where the Broncos want them, on their home turf.
The sting of the stunning 38-35 overtime loss to the eventual Super Bowl champions still smarts with head coach John Fox and the Broncos, who will be without the services of cornerback Champ Bailey due to a sprained left foot, as well as linebacker Von Miller who will miss the first six games of the season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
But this is also a different looking Ravens team. Gone are longtime defensive leader Ray Lewis, who retired after 17 seasons, as well as Ed Reed, now with the Houston Texans. Also gone are leading tacklers Bernard Pollard and Dannell Ellerbe, as well as fellow defensive starters Paul Kruger and Cary Williams. Offensively the team also has to find a way to move on without wide receiver Anquan Boldin, now with San Francisco, as well as injured tight end Dennis Pitta.
Ultimately, things rest on the shoulders of both quarterbacks, Peyton Manning of Denver, and Joe Flacco for the Ravens. It’s no turning back time. And the action starts tonight at 8:30 on NBC.
Washington Redskins begin Monday Night vs Eagles!!
The Washington Redskins will begin defense of their first NFC East Title in 13 years when they face the Philadelphia Eagles Monday Night at FedEx Field. With Robert Griffin III cleared to start, all eyes will be on the second year quarterback, who states he will be sliding more this year. The Redskins return several injured players from the defensive side, including Brian Orapko and Brandon Merriweather, The entire 11 man defensive unit is back, with the exception of Adam Karriker who is on the physically unable to perform list.
On the offensive side, wide receivers Pierre Garcon, Josh Morgan, as well as tight end Fred Davis are all healthy for the first time since the 2012 opener. The big question will be the teams secondary, which is young and inexperienced with rookies David Amerson and Bacarri Rambo added to the roster, joining Merriweather, DeAngelo Hall, and Josh Wilson.
There is a special starting time for Mondays game, due to a doubleheader that night in the NFL. The Eagles and Skins kick off at 6:55pm.
