Why New Quarterback Joe Flacco Gets the Broncos Back in the NFL Playoff Conversation by Mark Kiszla Denver Post June 5, 2019
Kiszla: Why new quarterback Joe Flacco gets the Broncos back in the NFL playoff conversation By Mark Kiszla Denver Post June 5, 2019 Flacco has never thrown for more than 27 touchdowns in any of his 11 previous seasons in the NFL and has topped 4,000 passing yards only once in his career. New Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco stinks … if you believe all the power rankings of quarterbacks on the internet. Those ratings suggest he is Trent Dilfer 2.0, at best. But like most of what you read on Twitter, the instant analysis of Flacco is for the birds. When Flacco drops back to pass, he earns respect without uttering a word, by displaying a gift that’s rare, even at the NFL level. “He can throw the ball 80 yards, easy,” Broncos linebacker Von Miller said Tuesday, marveling at a mighty heave Flacco unleashed during practice. “He threw it 80 yards across the field. He’s looking like a Super Bowl MVP to me.” Game knows game. And unlike a year ago, when Broncos teammates mightily tried to prop up Case Keenum as a quarterback to be trusted, Flacco’s arm talent has done the talking during spring workouts at Dove Valley Headquarters. “That man has a cannon, I can tell you that,” Denver defensive lineman Shelby Harris said last week. “That man can really throw the ball.” Game knows game. For example: When I asked Flacco how he can tell Miller is a special player, he replied: “I’ve been around a lot of good guys on defense, for most of my career, as you guys know. -

RB Ka'deem Carey, Arizona
2014 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT MARCH 2, 2014 NFL Draft 2014 Scouting Report: RB Ka’Deem Carey, Arizona *Our RB grades can and will change as more information comes in from Pro Day workouts, leaked Wonderlic test results, etc. We will update ratings as new info becomes available. *We use the term “Power RB” to separate physically bigger, more between-the-tackles–capable RBs from our “speed RBs” group. “Speed RBs” are physically smaller, but much faster/quicker, and less likely to flourish between the tackles. Ka'Deem Carey is the Derek Carr of RBs prospects in 2014. That is to say, Carey is a system guy with puffed-up stats because his team runs the ball heavily. It's no different than being wowed by Carr's raw passer numbers this year, and not considering the context of throwing the ball twice as much as most college teams. Double the throws...double the output. The masses see the raw totals and go predictably nuts for it. One time this year, Carey had 48 carries in a game. Give me a break... It's one thing to be awesome and have a bunch of carries. It's another to be mediocre and have heavy carry numbers making you look better than you really are. When Carey had 48 carries (vs. Oregon), he had 4.3 yards per carry...not impressive. In fact, several games this year ended with Carey below 5.0 yards per carry for the contest. We'll get into the numbers in the next section. I watched the tape on Carey, and I have no idea (actually, I do) why scouts and football analysts went bonkers. -

Evaluating Talent Acquisition Via the NFL Draft
Evaluating Talent Acquisition Via the NFL Draft by Casey Barney Anthony Caravella Michael Cullen Gary Jackson Craig E. Wills WPI-CS-TR-13-01 March 2013 1 Executive Summary In this work we apply data analytics to the National Football League Draft enabling us to pose and seek answers to a number of interesting questions regarding the success of drafting players over the period 2000 through the most recent 2012 draft and league season. The analysis is based on measuring the cost of acquiring players through the draft and the success of these players once acquired. We employ two primary metrics for measuring the cost of drafted players. The first simply uses the round in which a player is taken while the second uses a table of draft pick values initially developed within the NFL in the early 1990s. We also employ two metrics for measuring the success of drafted players where the first assigns a value to each player’s performance for a season. The second was developed as part of this work and is based on a weighted score for games played, games started and recognition as a top player. Using these metrics, we examine many questions of interest. We first examine which teams have drafted the best using combinations of cost and success metrics for all 32 NFL teams. If we ignore costs then Green Bay is the team that has drafted the best players since 2000 with New England and San Francisco close behind. In contrast, Washington has acquired the least amount of talent via the draft. -
