  • Alejandro Jodorowsky
Alejandro Jodorowsky Filmmaker, writer, mime, master of tarot, psychomagician, Alejandro Jodorowsky is an artist whose robust sense of living is matched only by the exceptional breadth of his creative practice. Author of dozens of books – from philosophy to poetry – and, with the French artist Moebius, the highly praised L’incal series of graphic novels, Jodorowsky’s works are marked by a great generosity as well as a remarkable ability to provoke. His first film, Fando y Lis (1967), shocked its audience into a riot when it premiered at the Acapulco Film Festival and was subsequently banned in Mexico. His following two films, El Topo (1970) and The Holy Mountain (1973) – beloved and supported by John Lennon – became immediate cult classics, initiating in the United States the “midnight movie” phenomenon in which his films would play for years. Jodorowsky’s recent film, The Dance of Reality (2013) – based on his 2001 autobiography – is a surreal exploration of the dream territories and traumas of his childhood. “The story of my life,” he writes, “is a constant effort to expand the imagination and its limitations, to capture its therapeutic and transformative potential.” Alejandro and I met at his apartment in Paris the evening after his 85th birthday. In his office, surrounded by walls of books and esoteric objects, we discussed his films, his influences, chance and intention, gravity and reality. Built with the guidance of the Fondazione Lucio Fontana, the all-white Ambiente spaziale (1968) at El Museo will follow the exact specifications of the artist’s final work in the series, originally conceived and presented at Documenta 4 in Kassel, Germany shortly before Fontana’s death.

Last year Severin released Santa Sangre for limited theatrical engagements with their own 4K restoration, but this new color grading promises to be even more eye-popping, with Jodorowsky himself even commenting that even he's never seen it look so good. Though the core thrust of the narrative explores the path to inner peace and greater spiritual understanding, Jodorowsky, as usual, throws in a vast number of symbols throughout the film, many of which are clear possibly a little too clear in some blunt moments but plenty of others can be perplexing.

  • Mexico City, Koans, and the Zen Buddhist Master: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Ejo Takata and the Fundamental Lesson of the Death of the Intellect ______
Mexico City, Koans, and the Zen Buddhist Master: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Ejo Takata and the Fundamental Lesson of the Death of the Intellect ___________________________________________________ KEN MARTIN UNIVERSITY OF NORTH GEORGIA Abstract In Alejandro Jodorowsky’s autobiographical story El maestro y las magas (2006), the eclectic and esoteric artist spends a significant amount of time recounting his experience under the tutelage of Japanese Zen Buddhist monk Ejo Takata in Mexico City in the latter part of the 1960s into the early 1970s. Their relationship as master and disciple would be an important, if not foundational, part of his worldview, which would be omnipresent in his corpus. From the koans proposed by Takata to his own book of short koans and stories for contemplation, Eastern philosophy is inseparable from his own being or his search for his true Self, which is also a common theme in his work. Takata’s four word lesson of “Intelectual, ¡aprende a morir!” (“Intellectual, learn to die!”) is the nucleus around which all of Jodorowsky’s oeuvre would revolve for at least his next forty-five years. Whether drinking warm sake and discussing Takata’s childhood or telling how Takata was challenged by an arrogant American student, Jodorowsky’s reverence for his master is pervasive and speaks of his dedication to the practices of Zen Buddhism. The monk, who usually dressed in his traditional robe, even participated in one of Jodorowsky’s plays by sitting on stage in meditation during the entire length of the performance. The monk’s influence would not end with Jodorowsky, as the artist himself would one day become the teacher and muse to many other popular artists, including Marcel Marceau, John Lennon, Marilyn Manson, Kanye West, and many others.
