Based on a listing by Elizabeth Ride on her website of names and descriptions shown in columns B, C and D - see elizabethridearchive.com It seems probable that the Chinese Agents as well as getting names wrong, were given false names deliberately to mislead, particularly of warships Use of Shima in lot of names is possibly error for wheel symbol 艘 or 轮commonly used by Chinese to indicate ship Identification system MKF etc see Talbot Booths Merchant Ships wartime years and postwar for explanation of nomenclature.

In most cases it is unclear from the sources whether the ship was lost in the territorial waters of the country in question, in the EEZ or in international waters. Where the The List presents basic details in the format: source specifically states ‘on’ a coast or specific location, it has been assumed that the wreck is in that country’s territorial waters. If, however, ‘off’ is used, or where no - Ship Name/former name(s), specific location is named, then the wreck is assumed to be in that country’s EEZ.
