Foremost among these are the women working in the sex industry who shared their stories with me. Their morally complex engagements with work that presents both opportunities and risks lie at the very heart of this project. The work of the sex worker advocacy group pushing for improved conditions in the sex industry is humbling and inspiring. I hope one day to emulate the richness and scale of her scholarship. Gayle Rubin is an immensely generous teacher and I am continuously in awe of her encyclopedic knowledge. We went through drafts of this text together, with Gayle going over language and ideas alike with a fine-tooth comb. Her words of wisdom, experience, and calm have made my passage through graduate school infinitely more pleasant. Her ability to link intellectual projects to social and political commitments has also left a deep impact on my scholarship. I have left every encounter with Liz Roberts feeling energized and inspired. She has an uncanny ability to hone in on an argument and to probe, always, at what the big ideas are, even when I have not yet become aware of them. It seems that she can always see things that are not there yet. Our conversations have immeasurably enriched this dissertation. Bridgette Carr does the difficult but inspiring work of both practitioner and teacher. I am thankful to her for making time for me in a workload that is already excessive, especially as my anthropological insights on sex work halfway across the world often seemed far less important than the practical work that she does every day advocating for justice for victims of human trafficking. My family has provided unflagging support, through coursework, fieldwork, teaching, and writing. My brother is wise beyond his years, with a patience and good humor that I have often benefitted from. The irreverent humor, keen insights, and warmth of Malou make her company a pleasure. The companionship of Stuart drives me forward, toward a life of exploration together. My largest debts are to my parents. I think that my interests in anthropology probably stem from the opportunities fostered by a bilingual childhood, a home that was always filled with books, and summers spent visiting family in Germany. My mother is a model of sacrifice, strength, and deep reserves of love for her family. Her support is constant and unconditional. She is also the bearer of a deeply vii inquiring mind. She had the surreal and gut-wrenching experience of video skyping with me during the aftershocks of the March 11, 2011 9.0 earthquake, watching me take cover numerous times and speaking to me throughout. I am probably much more like my father than I should be. He has read portions of almost everything I have ever written, and continues to ask when I will send him the dissertation. He is my earliest role model for what a scholar and intellectual should be, and has often taken me with him on his world travels, including my first trip to Japan. I hope that I reflect something of what my parents have tried to teach me about being a good person in the world. This dissertation is dedicated to them.

In the increasingly global economy, the movement of people and capital around the world creates new segments of sex work, with diverse groups of consumers and providers. This dissertation examines the dialectical link between intimacy and political economy. I examine how changes in the global economy structure relations of intimacy between clients and sex workers; and how intimacy can be a vital form of currency that shapes economic and political relations. Preface As widely known, the term ‘prostitution’ is regarded as a negative taboo word in Japan. Probably because of this, the word ‘Fuzoku(1)’, which is the euphemism of prostitution, has been recently commonly used to refer to the sex industry itself, brothels and sex workers. This paper intends to clarify the status quo of sex workers, and eventually reveal the taboo through comparative studies on the cases of Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Japan is opposed to Australia and New Zealand not only geographically but also in terms of re- sponses for prostitution including the welfare/health policies. Therefore, this paper mentions firstly the situations and problems sex workers in those three countries are faced with, in the process of which it will be hopefully clear at last why I conclude “The way to unionisation of sex workers” as a solution. II. Situation in Japan In Japan, the occupations and places related to prostitution began to be generally called ‘Fuzoku’ in the end of twentieth century and, the term has been commonly used since the beginning of twenty-first century. And, the ‘Fuzoku’consists mainly of escort agencies widely known in Western countries and brothels. The escort agencies in Japan have almost the same management system as those in Western countries; women (mostly) registered by the agencies are dispatched to hotels upon request via phone call or the like, while the system of brothels is rather complicated.

    Love Motels: Oriental Phenomenon or emergent sector? Abstract Purpose This study explores the ‘Love Motel’ concept by examining the changing attitude of consumers in Taiwan. This will increase knowledge of the sector and define love motels. Design/methodology/approach The literature review charts the development of Taiwanese love motels from a duel origin; American Motels and Japanese ‘Love Hotels.’ This is followed by an empirical qualitative study consisting of a twostage collection strategy: focus groups of hospitality and tourism professionals to gather a wide range of opinions on the subject area followed by semi structured interviews with consumers. Findings The findings split into three interrelated areas: growth of Taiwanese love motels due to more liberal attitudes towards sexual practice; a change in the public perception of motels due to increased standards and an increased satisfaction with the personal consumption experience; these hotels are designed for couples. Research limitations/implications The empirical element of this study is an exploration of consumer experience in Taiwanese love hotels. Due to the sensitive nature of some of the data that was gathered a qualitative approach has been adopted. Practical Implications The sexual associations with this product appear almost coincidental. If the love motel product is considered in its purest form it is simply a hotel product that provides complete anonymity for its guests. Therefore, despite its application in South East Asia, this hospitality concept has potential to be applied in a variety of guises. Originality/value The phenomenon of ‘Love Hotels’ is absent from hospitality management literature; this paper begins to fill that gap by beginning a discussion on this possibly controversial sector.

    26th Issue - First Quarter of 2014 Trend from January 1, 2014 to April 1, 2014 Land Price Research Division Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism May 2014 Survey Outline 1. Survey objective To clarify those land value trends of intensively used districts in major cities on a quarterly basis, which tend to indicate property market trends leadingly. 2. Matters to be surveyed Licensed Real Property Appraisers (LRPAs) collect information on the real property markets of the surveyed districts, and estimate land value trends by using real property appraisal methods. The results are to be aggregated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The survey results also include a summary of interviews with several real estate experts at real estate firms and financial institutions in each district. 3. Surveyed districts Those districts in three major metropolitan areas (Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya areas) and other major cities, land price trends of which are particularly important in the real property market. A total of 150 districts, including 65 districts in Tokyo area, 39 districts in Osaka area, 14 districts in Nagoya area, and 32 districts in other major cities, are surveyed. (See the attached sheet for the outlines of the districts.). Residential districts comprise of districts intensively used for high-rise apartments, etc. (44 districts).
