Franz Liszt is one of them and one of the representative musicians, both as a pianist and a composer, of the Romantic Era. Liszt was a true romantic. Liszt's music resembles his romantic and dramatic life' and he was the most distinguished virtuoso pianist in the Romantic Era, as a composer, he left many virtuosic works, especially for piano solo. There is no doubt that hundreds of his piano compositions were written so that he could give performances by himself. Liszt was the incomparable virtuoso of his time and is still regarded as a legend.     Hannah Rioux December 4, 2015 Music 220-02 Research/ Listening Paper Franz Liszt and his Piano Sonata in B Minor S.178 have left a long lasting legacy on musical history. Throughout his life, Liszt shaped the ways of music significantly. In fact, many of his imprints on musical history still have an impact, today. Similarly, his piano composition, Piano Sonata in B Minor S.178, is still considered to be one of history’s great pieces, which gained my interest in not only this piece of work, but Liszt and his lasting impact, as well. After traveling through Europe and composing hundreds of musical works, Liszt’s listeners were not only intrigued by his music, but other big names in the musical world were, as well. Liszt managed to change the way that things were done musically several hundred years ago by influencing other musicians through his work, but he has also changed the way of musicians to this day. Hungarian composer Franz Liszt was born on October 22, 1811 in Doborján, Hungary (now Raiding Austria) to father, and musician, Adam Liszt and mother Anna Maria Läger, who was an amateur musician (LaVine). Franz’s father played multiple instruments and taught Franz to play the piano at a young age, which began his musical career. From very early on, Liszt excelled in music. He was considered to be a child prodigy by age 6, and then he began writing and composing music at the age of 8, and was performing in concerts at the early age of 9 (Franz Liszt Biography).

    “Hungarian Identity” and the Music of Franz Liszt LEE, Shaw 1. Liszt in Germany Franz Liszt’s first visit to Weimar was actually in 1840, according to “Gästebuch des Goethehauses (1832-1842/1866-1911). GSA 150/Goethe-Nationalmuseum 200, S.96”.1 Having been appointed Court Conductor (Hofkapellmeister) in 1848 after the death of Johann Nepomuk Hummel, the previous Hofkapellmeister in Weimar who had died in 1837, Franz Liszt settled semi-permanently into Weimar for several reasons, quitting his travels in Europe as a great Virtuoso. (He settled into Rome in 1861. However gradually from the late 1860’s he lived moving mainly from Weimar to Budapest via Rome. It was the so-called “vie trifurquée” (life trifurcated).2) It was clear that he intended to worship the German greats, because he not only held the “Goethe-Festival” (1849), “Herder- Festival” (1850), and music festivals such as “Wagner-Week” (“Wagnerwoche”) and “Berlioz-week” in the context of “The New German School”, but also wrote writings such as “Goethe-Foundation” and “Tannhäuser and Lohengrin”, and works such as “Faust-Symphony” and the so-called “Goethe-March.”3 In addition, he donated a lot of money to the monuments of Beethoven as well as Goethe-Schiller. On one hand, he tried to identify himself with Western-Europe, since his adolescence in Paris. On the other hand, he saw himself as a non-Western-European, i.e. a Hungarian. One of Liszt’s best friends, Prince (Fürst) Felix Lichnowsky, was so conservative that he was murdered on 18 September, 1848 after being tortured.4 This incident was shocking enough to have a strong political influence on Liszt.5 Based upon this matter, Liszt came not to hesitate to occupy himself with political matters in Paris.

The first member of the family to appear in the parish register of Rajka (an agricultural town on the shores of the Danube) was his great-grandfather, Sebastian List (c. –). Up until the early twentieth century, almost all members of this German-speaking family lived in this region, inhabited by ethnic Germans, Magyars and Slovaks. Sebastian’s parents probably arrived in Hungary along with those hun- dreds of thousands of other families whose settlement was agreed on by leading Austrian and Hungarian politicians of the era. Following the century and a half (–) of Turkish occupation, and then an uprising against the Habsburg Empire by Ferenc Rákóczi II (–), the population of the country had been depleted. A slow growth had started after the peace treaty of Szatmár. The census only counted a population of .– million. The census ordered by Joseph II saw these figures double. Although the language and culture of this immigrant population of .–. million people was not Hungarian, these dissimilarities had not caused issues, since stratification resulted from social status and not ethnic- ity. Every inhabitant of the Kingdom of Hungary counted as a Hungarus, regardless of whether they considered themselves to be Magyar, German, Romanian, Slav or any other ethnicity.

Born to be a Superstar Schon vor Franz Liszts Geburt kündigte sich Außergewöhnliches an: Eine „Zigeunerin“ prophezeite seiner Mutter Maria Anna Liszt einen großen Sohn – schließlich erschien zu dieser Zeit der „Große Comet von 1811“ am Himmel. Franz Liszt wurde am 22. Oktober 1811 im burgenländischen Raiding, das damals zu Ungarn gehörte, geboren. Er zeigte schon früh außergewöhnliches musikalisches Talent, nach ersten erfolgreichen Konzerten in Ödenburg und Pressburg galt er als Wunderkind. Sein Vater Adam Liszt – Verwaltungsbeamter und selbst Amateurcellist am Hof der Esterházys - ermöglichte ihm früh Klavierunterricht bei Carl Czerny und Antonio Salieri in Wien. Die Salons, Bühnen und Adelshäuser in Paris und London eroberte der zwölfjährige Liszt bereits im Sturm. Liszt gilt als Revolutionär des Klavierspiels: seine Solostücke und Konzerte waren virtuos, als erster bestritt er einen Konzertabend alleine als Pianist und prägte die Form des „Piano Recital“. Er pflegte ein exzentrisches Gehabe auf der Bühne, absolvierte vielbejubelte Auftritte in ganz Europa und verstand es, sein Publikum zu Begeisterungsstürmen hinzureißen.
