Choora 2021-10-07 Choora Kolekcja: Kolekcja główna Muzeum: Muzeum broni białej jelopano Właściciel: jelopano Datowanie: 1900 Miejsce pochodzenia: Afganistan Stan eksponatu: Bardzo dobry Opis: Choora - sztylet/puginał, uważany za najbardziej charakterystyczną broń krótką Afganistanu. Jest to broń kłująco – sieczna, raczej niewielkich rozmiarów (przeważnie 30 – 35 cm), choć zdarzają się i bardzo długie egzemplarze. Jest to względnie nowy typ noża, który pojawił się w Afganistanie na początku XX wieku i dość szybko rozpowszechnił wypierając dłuższą broń białą. Na wielu fotografiach i rysunkach/grafikach z XIX wieku często można ujrzeć groźnie patrzących brodatych Afgańczyków uzbrojonych w szable, khybery i karudy. Na żadnym z nich nie odnaleziono wizerunku choory. Pojawiają się one natomiast na fotografiach z XX wieku. Ich wynalezienie i rosnącą popularność wiąże się z szerokim rozpowszechnieniem nowoczesnej wielostrzałowej broni palnej, dzięki której coraz rzadziej dochodziło do walki wręcz. Choorę identyfikuje się historycznie z izolowanymi (w pewnym sensie) afgańskimi plemionami Pasztuńskimi Mahsudów i Wazirów (Waziristan – pogranicze pakistańsko - afgańskie). W Kabulu noże te nazywane są nożami Wazirów (chore). W większości przypadków nóż noszony był tradycyjnie w pochwie za pasem, czasami trafiają się charakterystyczne (również dla karudów) „uprzęże”. Ponieważ choora pojawiła i rozpowszechniła się w XX wieku, do jej konstrukcji używano różnych materiałów – od kości, rogu i mosiądzu w starszych egzemplarzach po aluminium i tworzywa sztuczne. Choory posiadały względnie wąskie rękojeści a wystająca oprawa głowni zastępowała jelec chroniąc dłoń przed ześlizgnięciem się na ostrze. Choory głęboko chowają się w pochwy a charakterystyczne zakrzywione i rozwidlone głowice rękojeści ułatwiały ich wyjęcie. Prezentowany przez mnie egzemplarz jest – w mojej ocenie – jednym ze starszych. Podobnie oprawione egzemplarze kojarzone są z Waziristanem. Rękojeść z rogu, nabijana srebrnym i miedzianym drutem. Mosiężny jelec. Ostra, wzmocniona głownia w kształcie litery T w przekroju. Wyjątkowo ciekawa i nietypowa drewniana pochwa opleciona misternie rzemieniem z długim, metalowym trzewikiem. Trzewik jest dużo starszy od Choory. Najprawdopodobniej stanowił okucie pochwy karuda lub khybera i może pochodzić z XIX wieku. Wymiary: Długość bez pochwy – 35 cm, długość głowni – 24 cm. 1 Nóż/miecz Khyberów 2021-10-07 Nóż/miecz Khyberów Kolekcja: Kolekcja główna Muzeum: Muzeum broni białej jelopano Właściciel: jelopano Datowanie: 1850 Miejsce pochodzenia: Afganistan Stan eksponatu: Dobry Opis: KHYBER, nazywany również „Salwar Jatagan” – to jedyna biała broń, którą można nazwać typowo afgańską. „Khyber”, czyli „chajberski nóż” jest typem broni białej mieszczącym się pomiędzy bronią długą i krótką. Nazwy „Khyber” „nóż khyberski” oraz „Salawar Jatagan” zostały nadane przez Anglików. Pierwsza z nich nawiązuje do nazwy przełęczy, znajdującej się na pograniczu Pakistanu i Afganistanu. Kolejna – stanowi przekręcone słowo „Silaweh” (selawa – selawar - salwar). Druga część nazwy – jatagan – została dodana przez Anglików w celu podkreślenia charakteru broni/średniego tasaka, który kojarzył im się z tureckim jataganem. W samym Afganistanie broń była nazywana różnie w różnych regionach – Silaweh, Churra, Charah, Charra. Samo słowo Churra oznacza długi nóż. Warto podkreślić, że analogicznie do kindżałów kaukaskich, khyber był rozpowszechniony wśród plemion górskich, które przemieszczały się głównie pieszo a nie konno. Był więc „idealną” bronią pieszego wojownika, która – w razie konieczności – mogła być wykorzystana do potrzeb bytowo – gospodarskich. Rozmiary khyberów wahały się od 45 do 100 cm. Ciężkie noże/tasaki były tradycyjną bronią plemion pasztuńskich, zamieszkujących rejon przełęczy Khyberskiej. Charakterystyczną cechą khyberów była masywna, znacznie rozszerzająca się ku rękojeści głownia, przypominająca w przekroju literę „T”. Funkcjonalność tych noży – tasaków była tak wysoka, że po wtargnięciu Afgańczyków do Indii, khybery przyjęły się w północnej części tego kraju. W Indiach często produkowane były bogato zdobione egzemplarze z damasceńskiej stali. Dla Afganistanu typowe są dłuższe, cięższe tasaki z rękojeściami z karbowanego rogu (jak prezentowany). Dla egzemplarzy indyjskich charakterystyczne jest np. zakończenie rękojeści tzw. „ptasią głową”. Khybery tradycyjnie noszone były w pochwach zatkniętych za pas. Dopiero pod koniec XIX wieku na pochwach pojawiły zaczepy w postaci pierścienia umożliwiające noszenie na rapciach na lewym boku Prezentowany egzemplarz: Dość długi, ciężki, typowo bojowy Khyber.Długość 74 cm. Brak pochwy. Rękojeść z karbowanego rogu. Głownia kuta w kształcie litery T w przekroju zapewniającej większą wytrzymałość. Więcej o Khyberach przy opisie drugiego egzemplarza. 1 Lohar 2021-10-07 Lohar Kolekcja: Kolekcja główna Muzeum: Muzeum broni białej jelopano Właściciel: jelopano Datowanie: 1900 Miejsce pochodzenia: Afganistan Stan eksponatu: Bardzo dobry Opis: LOHAR Jeden z ciekawszych przedmiotów, którego pierwotne przeznaczenie jest trudne do jednoznacznego zinterpretowania. Wątpliwości dotyczą nawet samej nazwy „Lohar”, która została – wraz z pierwszym opisem - opublikowana w 1934 r. przez badacza/podróżnika Johna K Stone. W rzeczywistości słowo „lohar” oznacza wyspecjalizowaną kastę kowali/płatnerzy i pochodzi od słowa „loha” czyli żelazo. A sami Afgańczycy na określenie sierpa używają słowa „lor”. Trochę się Stone^owi pomieszało ale nazwa przyjęła się wśród kolekcjonerów i tak już zostało. Najnowsze badania wskazują, że Lohar pierwotnie był sierpem o stałym (nieskładanym stylisku), wykorzystywanym głownie do prac rolnych. Oczywiście, jak wiele tego typu narzędzi (sierp, kosa, japońska kama, cep itp.) w razie nagłej konieczności mógł być wykorzystywany do obrony lub walki. Sierp w kulturze afgańskiej ma też charakter sakralno – ceremonialny, stąd pojawianie się bogato dekorowanych egzemplarzy, które zazwyczaj mylono z bojowymi nadziakami. Jeszcze ciekawiej wyglądają – tak jak prezentowany powyżej – składane egzemplarze Loharów. Najprawdopodobniej konstrukcja taka pojawiła się na początku XX wieku. W 1903 r. biuro patentów USA zarejestrowało analogiczny system/mechaniza, który m.in. został wykorzystany przy konstrukcji brytyjskich noży składanych (choć brytyjskie noże składane pojawiły się jeszcze w XIX wieku), po czym podpatrzony i zaadaptowany w Afganistanie. Pojawienie się miejscowych składanych wariantów sierpów i noży może wiązać się z wprowadzonym w 1879 r. przez Anglików zakazem noszenia przez miejscową ludność jakiejkolwiek broni. Winni złamania zakazu byli karani śmiercią przez powieszenie, bez sądu i postępowania wyjaśniającego. Oczywiście przepis mógł być egzekwowany tylko w głównych ośrodkach stacjonowania wojsk brytyjskich, niemniej jednak wymusił pojawienie się i rozwój broni umożliwiającej skryte przenoszenie. Przy tej teorii – składane lohary były przede wszystkim orężem. Prezentowany egzemplarz o dość skomplikowanej choć doskonale działającej konstrukcji umożliwia złożenie do dość małych rozmiarów i błyskawiczne otwarcie jednym ruchem nadgarstka. Ruchome elementy blokują się na dwóch przegubach tworząc nadziak. Jego złożenie wymaga odblokowania dwóch zapadek. Ponadto – czego nie uwzględniłem na zdjęciach – ostrze może dodatkowo rozłożyć się do pozycji poziomej tworząc długi nóż o sierpowatej głowni. Wykonany z metalu/stali, mosiądzu, kości oraz drewna. Bogato zdobiony w sposób charakterystyczny dla Afganistanu, 1 Lohar 2021-10-07 m.in. miedzianymi wstawkami na głowni. Na pochwie wyobrażenie demona Raksza. Na rękojeści demon Rakshasa (?). Mendak - pierścień przy rękojeści wysadzany kamieniami półszlachetnymi. Piękna, ceremonialna broń - wg. wierzeń posiadająca moc magiczną.     Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

South Yemen united with North Yemen to form one country. Were more people in the south going to emulate the northerners and buy jambiyas once again? Having not been in the southern region since 1993, we surveyed five main southern towns in early 2008 to see if influences from the north had encouraged the southerners to wear jambiyas in recent years. In many ways the southerners are emulating the northerners: they have shed Marxism in favour of capitalism and there has been an increase in traditional Islamic practices, but they still look down on jambiyas. However, the dagger is still a proud sign of being a northern tribesman, and Sanaa remains the centre of the jambiya industry - with rhino horn most favoured for handles; Taiz trails a distant second in importance. We learned more about the attitudes of Yemenis, especially from the younger more prosperous men in Sanaa who are likely to buy a rhino horn jambiya. And we increased public awareness on the plight of the rhino, distributing DVDs on Yemen’s rhino horn trade and supplying other educational materials to Yemenis in Sanaa and Taiz.     Spring 2013 TAKING INITIATIVE TO CHANGE TOMORROW Message from the Chairman Welcome to this issue of UAB Psychiatry. In this issue, we share with you a few of the many successes of our faculty, staff, and trainees, and highlight a broad spectrum of services we provide and accomplishments of our team. One of the critical mandates when I arrived at UAB was to expand our academic mission, with emphasis on the development of our research mission and extramurally funded grant portfolio. In this issue, we showcase our most recent faculty recruit, Dr. Karen Gamble. Dr. Gamble moved late last year from Vanderbilt, and has rapidly established her laboratory in some of our recently renovated state- of-the-art laboratory space housed in the Sparks Building. As you will read, she is truly a translational scientist focusing on our daily rhythms such as sleep that are often profoundly disturbed in a number of psychiatric conditions. While the core of her research is in rodent models, she maintains an interest in clinical questions such as the impact of the ability of nurses working the late shift to adapt to this artificially imposed change in their body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. In addition to introducing Dr. Gamble, we showcase some of the recent research successes of both scientists that I have brought to UAB since my arrival as well as of scientists that have been in the Department longer than my tenure. Hopefully we have captured the excitement that pervades these many laboratories and research teams throughout the Department. Message Contemporary Psychiatry departments are often involved in more activities than many are aware.
