Dear Applicant,

I am writing to you on behalf of an NGO called Asha Chennai which works in the field of education. We received your application for one of five teachers’ positions available in primary and middle schools in Ottapidaram, Vilathikulam and Kayathar blocks of Thoothukudi district. Thank you for your interest.

You are hereby requested to come for a selection process on August 8, 2009 (Saturday). The process will start with an introduction followed by a one-hour written test. If you pass the written test based on minimum cut-off marks that we set, you will be asked to stay back for a round of interviews the same day. The final selection will happen based on your performance in the interviews. Selection will depend entirely on merit and qualification. Recommendations or cash/any other form of inducements are strictly not acceptable. All decisions on teachers’ selection made by us (Asha Chennai) are final.

Please read below carefully for important information : 1. Date of teachers’ selection – August 8, 2009 (Saturday) a. Arrive at the venue at 10:00 am b. Written test – 10:30-11:30 am c. 6. Bring a passport size photo, an exam pad, pen, pencil and eraser for the written test. 7. The candidate’s travel expense for the interview (from and to your native town only) will be reimbursed, so retain your bus ticket. You will have to make arrangements for food yourself. 8. If selected, please understand that you will be an employee of Asha Chennai, an NGO working in the field of education. Congratulations. Asha Chennai is pleased to offer you an appointment to a position as a teacher for a school in Thoothukudi district. You are requested to join duty on or before ______. You will be on probation till the end of this academic year. Before the start of next academic year, we will re-evaluate your skill-sets and will confirm your appointment only upon satisfactory performance.

Here are your honorarium details: 10. Basic: Rs.2,900 per month 11. Festival bonus: Rs.2,500 per year (upon completion of one year ); Rs.1,250 after 6 months 12. Travel Allowance: Rs.500 per month maximum 13. House Rent Allowance: Rs.400 per month (only for outstation teachers ) We would be paying your monthly honorariums either by cheque/DD or by direct debit to your bank account. Hence, you are required to open a bank account and inform us the details of your account.

Leave policy • All government holidays practiced by the school. • One vacation day per month (unpaid) after consultation with me. You can accrue and use this in bulk. • You can accrue paid leave by putting in extra days of work beyond the normal working days when requested by me. En-cashing paid leave and reduction in wages for unpaid leave will both be done with a daily rate of 1/30 of your monthly honorarium. If you take more than 3 days leave at a stretch, the intervening holidays will also be counted as leave of absence.

Roles and Responsibilities • You are an Asha Chennai employee and you will be reporting to us directly. Your time at the school should be spent on imparting education to the students and keeping track of their progress. You are not required to do any administrative task that a government teacher is supposed to do. • Your primary responsibility will be to teach only in the primary section (classes 1-5) of the school you are appointed to; this will involve facilitating Activity-Based Learning (ABL) classes. You are required to seek help from the government teachers in your school on how to handle ABL classes.

• You will maintain a register of all students in primary sections of your school. This should include: 1. Children’s names, gender, age, class & village. 2. Names of parents and their occupation. 3. Names, ages of siblings (brothers/sisters) and whether they are studying in the same school. • You should update this register if a student is a long-absentee or leaves the school and the reasons for the same. You should also update this register every academic year. • You will submit a report to us every three months of the academic year ending August, November, February and May. The report should contain activities at the school, duties you performed, update on the students (including new admissions, drop-outs, and long-absentees), update on government teachers in your school and anything else you observe. • The report could be in Tamil but we recommend that you write the report in English. • You would be asked to help out in other Asha work once in a while. These include setting up and operating libraries in your school, organizing annual day functions, purchasing learning and teaching materials for your school, overseeing the Asha Chennai library in the local village and others. • All Asha Chennai teachers in Thoothukudi district are required to call a meeting once a month, preferably on the first Saturday of every month, to discuss progress and issues at various schools. Asha volunteers might participate in the meeting either in person or over the phone. • If you have to discontinue your services for any reason, you are required to inform us at least one month in advance so that we may find a suitable replacement.
