Situation Analysis Nepal Earthquake
Situation Analysis OSOCC Nepal Earthquake Assessment Cell 05.05.2015 SITUATION OVERVIEW The earthquake from 25 April (7.8 magnitude) was followed by a series of aftershocks up to a magnitude of 6.7, mostly to the east of the original epicentre causing further localised damage. As of 4 May, 7,365 people have been killed and more than 14,300 injured. 39 of Nepal’s 75 districts have been affected. Access to remote areas remains a challenge. Initial reports were that up to 90 per cent of the houses in Gorkha and Sindhupalchok districts have been destroyed. UNDAC has established humanitarian hubs in Gorkha and Sindhupalchok. Most affected districts (4 May 2015) Based on estimates of damaged buildings. Analysis using data from: Multi-National Military and Coordination Centre, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Population Census (2011) Priorities for humanitarian intervention (based on consolidated secondary data): Shelter: tarpaulins, tents, blankets, repair tools and other NFIs Food delivery WASH: water supply, sanitation Health: facilities, medicine Access to remote areas Ensuring equitable distribution of relief items Rubble removal CRISIS IMPACT According to the government, the worst affected districts are Bhaktapur, Dhading, Dolakha, Gorkha, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Lamjung, Rasuwa, Ramechhap, Nuwakot, Sindhupalchok, Makawanpur, and Sindhuli (LCT 02/05/2015). Currently available information indicates that Sindhupalchok, Gorkha and Dhading are the priority districts for assistance. Although Rasuwa has a relatively small population, it is difficult to access and current information indiactesover 80% of the population are affected. While the relief effort is now reaching beyond Kathmandu, access to remote areas remains a key challenge (LCT 02/05/2015). -

In a phraseological departure from earlier Idocuments on regional power cooperation, it called electricity a 'strategic' commodity. This is with reason. Electricity's central role in economic growth makes it a focal point for contestations in democratic politics across the world, and it is no different in South Asia. The interdependencies created by regional electricity markets can diversify the generation pool and reduce the cost of electricity, but, like all forms of regional cooperation, they are also a vulnerability. -

The project comprises of two major components that are: 21st Century Maritime Silk Route (MSR) and Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) which is further distributed in six overland economic corridors where China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is one significant corridor. The project holds massive importance for China in particular and all the other stakeholders in general and will provide enormous opportunity for the socio-economic as well as the infrastructural development of many countries across the globe. The rationale behind China’s massive investment in this project is to attain global domination through geopolitical expansions. China’s economic activities and investment are directed to the promotion of global trade. Although the commencement of the project met with skeptical views as for few specific countries, it is China’s strategic policy to upsurge and enhance its military and economic presence in the World especially in the Indian Ocean and emerge as an economic giant by replacing USA’s superpower status. -

The Sharp Power and Democratic Resilience series is an effort to systematically analyze the ways in which leading authoritarian regimes seek to manipulate the political landscape and censor independent expression within democratic settings, and to highlight potential civil society responses. This initiative examines emerging issues in four crucial arenas relating to the integrity and vibrancy of democratic systems: • Challenges to free expression and the integrity of the media and information space • Threats to intellectual inquiry • Contestation over the principles that govern technology • Leverage of state-driven capital for political and often corrosive purposes The present era of authoritarian resurgence is taking place during a protracted global democratic downturn that has degraded the confidence of democracies. Preparatory Survey on the Cross-Border Road Network Improvement Project (Bangladesh) Final Report 6. TRAFFIC DEMAND FORECAST 6.1 Present Traffic Situation around the Target Roads 6.1.1 Outline of the Traffic Surveys In order to understand the present traffic situation around the target roads, a traffic count (T/C) survey and a roadside OD survey were implemented. The T/C surveys were conducted for the 3-day survey (for 12 and 24 hours on weekdays, for 12 hours on weekend) at 2 locations, for the 24-hour survey at 6 locations and for the 12-hour survey at 2 locations. The roadside OD survey, which included a 14-hour OD interview survey and 24-hour T/C surveys, was conducted at 5 locations. The location and survey types of these traffic surveys are shown in Figure 6.1.1 and Figure 6.1.2. Also, the surveyed vehicle type is shown in Table 6.1.1. T/C survey were implemented for all types of vehicles (①–⑭), and OD interview survey were implemented for the ③Passenger car (Sedan, SUV) & taxi – ⑪Utility, which are motorized vehicles except ①motorbike, ②CNG (Auto-rickshaw)/Baby taxi and non-motorized light vehicles used for the short distance trips, in order to grasp the origin and destination of the inter-city middle and long trip traffic. Kaladan Multimodal Transport Project in Mizoram EIA-EMP Report Construction of road from NH-54 to Indo-Myanmar border Chapter-2- The Project CHAPTER 2 THE PROJECT 2.0 The Project 2.1 Project road alignment The Project Road takes off at 76.400 km on NH-54 at Lawngtlai town in south Mizoram, runs towards the south and terminates at Indo Myanmar border ( River Zocha) road. The Project road alignment passes through frequently cultivated degraded jhumland. It crosses the existing BRO roads, namely, Lawngtlai to Diltlang Parva road at one point and Nalkawn Chamdur Valley road at four points. The road, proposed to be of double – lane NH standard is of length 99.830 km. The road also passes through the villages of Saizawh East and Zochachhuah. The location of this proposed trade route has been shown in Map 2.1 . About 17.88 % length of the road passes through private land , 75.76% passes through degraded jhumland and 6.36 % pass through forest land. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Most of the world civilizations are developed in the river basins. However, we do not have too big rivers in Nepal, though Nepalese culture is closely related with water and rivers. All the sacraments from birth to the death event in Nepalese society are related with river. Rivers and ponds are the living places of Nepali gods and goddesses. Jalkanya and Jaladevi are known as the goddesses of rivers. In the same way, most of the sacred places are located at the river banks in Nepal. Varahakshetra, Bishnupaduka, Devaghat, Triveni, Muktinath and other big Tirthas lay at the riverside. Most of the people of Nepal despose their death bodies in river banks. Death sacrement is also done in the tirthas of such localities. In this way, rivers of Nepal bear the great cultural value. Most of the sacramental, religious and cultural activities are done in such centers. Religious fairs and festivals are also organized in such a places. Therefore, river is the main centre of Nepalese culture. Key words: sacred, sacraments, purity, specialities, bath. Introduction The geography of any localities play an influencing role for the development of culture of a society. It affects a society directly and indirectly. In the beginning the nomads passed their lives for thousands of year in the jungle. -

Connectivity Through BCIM-EC 121 CONNECTIVITY THROUGH BCIM-EC: PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES Sultana Yesmin∗ Abstract The paper examines the status of physical connectivity along the proposed overland routes of the BCIM economic corridor. The study tends to elucidate the areas of common interests of the BCIM countries by and large due to geo- strategic and geo-economic importance of physical connectivity in the BCIM sub- region. The paper, thereby, observes the successive developments of the BCIM Regional Cooperation Forum, since its inauguration, towards achieving its goals and objectives. Hence, the paper comes up with some policy recommendations while exploring major threats prevailing across the BCIM-EC. INTRODUCTION The Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Regional Cooperation Forum has been established with a view to boosting regional integration among the four member countries through intensifying physical connectivity and economic corridor in the region. Connecting three sub-regions together, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia, the BCIM- Economic Corridor (BCIM- EC) is not only geo-strategically significant but also geo-economically requisite for the member countries to be essential parts of global trade and business in the region. Given the importance, since the establishment, the BCIM-EC has made massive progresses towards the fulfilment of its goals and objectives along with the cooperation of the four countries. Though initially starting as a non- governmental project, the BCIM Forum is now one of the major priority agendas of the governments of the BCIM member countries in order to enhance regional connectivity and multilateral trade relations. As far as the interests of four countries from three distinct regions are concerned, it is important to specify the areas of their common interests with a view to signifying the common objectives of the BCIM-EC.
