by Becky Ginos b [email protected] SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Education Association (UEA) sites a growing concern among teachers throughout the state that school districts’ plans to return to school do not provide adequate health safeguards. “I’m hearing from teachers all around the state who are fearful their school district plans don’t go far enough to protect them and their students,” said UEA President Heidi Matthews in a release. “Some plans go into great detail about student health and safety but fall short in adequately addressing protections for school employees.” In a survey of teachers from across the state, safety is their number one concern returning to school, said Mike Kelly, director of Public Relations and Communications for UEA. “It’s at top of mind for teachers both for students and themselves. Some plans did not include a mask requirement for students but that will change with the Governor’s mandate. It started small with one obstacle for a while. Then it gained in popularity across the valley so we got more kids involved. Lloyd Aldin Porter, a former resident of Bountiful, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2020, in Morgan at the age of 92. His death was just 92 days after the passing of his wife, Shirley, whom he was married to for 67 years. Born in Salt Lake City, he was raised in Blackfoot and Idaho Falls, Idaho, where he excelled in basketball and track. He served in the West Central States mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he met Shirley while she also served her mission. They were married on Feb. 19, 1953 in the Idaho Falls Temple. Porter managed a financial planning office, as well as being actively involved in his church duties. He served as a bishop, stake president, regional representative and patriarch, and was called as a counselor in the Boise Idaho temple presidency when it first opened. In 1986 he was called as mission president in the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission, where he served for a year before receiving a new calling to serve as a member of the First Quorum of Seventy, a position he held for 14 years. He and Shirley later served as President and Matron of the Salt Lake Temple for three years. A fireworks display in the skies over Mueller Park Junior High has become a tradition to cap off the city’s Handcart Days festivities for the 24th of July. However, due to the pandemic those were cancelled but the Fireworks Show will still be held. The show will light up the skies at dusk on the evening of July 24.
