University of Cape Town Abstract The Facta et Dicta Memorabilia of Valerius Maximus, written during the formative stages of the Roman imperial system, survives as a near unique instance of an entire work composed in the genre of Latin exemplary literature. By providing the first detailed historical and historiographical commentary on Book 9 of this prose text – a section of the work dealing principally with vice and immorality – this thesis examines how an author employs material predominantly from the earlier, Republican, period in order to validate the value system which the Romans believed was the basis of their world domination and to justify the reign of the Julio-Claudian family. By detailed analysis of the sources of Valerius’ material, of the way he transforms it within his chosen genre, and of how he frames his exempla, this thesis illuminates the contribution of an often overlooked author to the historiography of the Roman Empire. -

For over two generations, paleographers have taken as their vade mecum in the decipherment of this abbreviated Latin the Lexicon abbreviaturarum compiled by Adriano Cappelli for the series "Manuali Hoepli" in 1899. The perennial value of this work undoubtedly lies in the alphabetic list of some 14,000 abbreviated forms that comprises the bulk of the work, but all too often the beginner slavishly looks up in this dictionary every abbreviation he encounters, when in nine cases out of ten he could ascertain the meaning by applying a few simple rules. That he does not do so is simply a matter of practical convenience, for the entries in the Lexicon are intelligible to all who read Latin, while the general principles of Latin abbreviation are less easily accessible for rapid consultation, at least for the American student. No doubt somewhere in his notes there is an out line of these rules derived from lectures or reading, but even if the notes are at hand they are apt to be sketchy; for reference he would rather rely on the lengthier accounts available in manuals of paleography, but more often than not he has only Cappelli's dictionary at his elbow. -

4. THE SLUMS OF GOSMOPOLIS: A RENAISSANCE IN THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY? Brian P. Copenhaver In his amazing autobiography, when he describes his move in 1963 to UC San Diego in order to found a new department of philoso phy, Dick Popkin mentions in passing that he also became the edi tor of a new journal at that time—the Journal of the Hütory of Philosophy.1 Justly celebrated as stimulus and guiding spirit of cultural, political, intellectual and philosophical conversation on many planes and in many places, Dick has also won fame as founding and abiding genius of that journal for three and a half decades, with more to come. Since it is the leading vehicle in any language for the history of phi losophy, his many years of dedication to the Journal's growth and improvement deserve abundant thanks here and will long earn the praise of its readers—past, present and future. Dick also recalls in telling his story how his work as editor once caused him to glance at a Polish journal that happened to contain some unpublished Hume letters that happened to end up in Cracow because a Polish aristo crat happened to have bought them in England two hundred years before.2 This particular chain of happenings helped Dick dislodge Hume from the sole proprietorship of British empiricism. To the prepared mind, of course, such things are more apt to happen. In gratitude for what Dick has taught so many about preparing the mind—though few minds can aspire to rival his—I offer the fol lowing with its own chains of happening across the centuries. -

Introduction to Latin American Cinema Sample Syllabus Course description This course offers students a cultural history of Latin America in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through the study of its cinema. The course is divided into five parts, each one corresponding to a major cinematic period: silent cinema, studio cinema, Neorealism / Art Cinema, the New Latin American Cinema, and contemporary cinema. Learning objectives Students will learn to describe, analyze, and evaluate the intersection between form and content in a select number of important Latin American films, by situating them in contexts that are simultaneously national, regional, and global. Class-specific objectives are listed in the calendar below. Note to teachers: This course can be taught without having to include a unifying theoretical concept. However, I have found that by incorporating the theoretical framework of multiple modernities, classroom discussions on such topics as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, nationalism, populism, and historiography can be more productively framed from a distinctively Latin American perspective. Livy’s Early History of Rome: The Horatii & Curiatii (Book 1.24-26) Mary Sarah Schmidt University of Georgia Summer Institute 2016 [1] The Horatii and Curiatii This project is meant to highlight the story of the Horatii and Curiatii in Rome’s early history as told by Livy. It is intended for use with a Latin class that has learned the majority of their Latin grammar and has knowledge of Rome’s history surrounding Julius Caesar, the civil wars, and the rise of Augustus. The Latin text may be used alone or with the English text of preceding chapters in order to introduce and/or review the early history of Rome. This project can be used in many ways. It may be an opportunity to introduce a new Latin author to students or as a supplement to a history unit. The Latin text may be used on its own with an historical introduction provided by the instructor or the students may read and study the events leading up to the battle of the Horatii and Curiatii as told by Livy. Ideally, the students will read the preceding chapters, noting Livy’s intention of highlighting historical figures whose actions merit imitation or avoidance. This will allow students to develop an understanding of what, according to Livy and his contemporaries, constituted a morally good or bad Roman. Upon reaching the story of the Horatii and Curiatii, not only will students gain practice and understanding of Livy’s Latin literary style, but they will also be faced with the morally confusing Horatius. -

Mai 1518, mitten in einer sich dramatisch zuspitzenden Zeit, welche die Geschichtsschreibung einmal mit dem Namen „Reformation" belegen sollte, schrieb von Heidelberg aus ein junger Dominikanermönch einen Brief nach Schlettstadt, seiner Heimat. Der Empfänger des Briefes war Beatus Rhenanus; der Absender war Martin Bucer, der spätere Reformator von Straßburg. Bucer berichtete in deutlich erregter Stimmung von der Heidelber- ger Disputation, die kurz vorher, am 26. April, hochoffiziell im Hörsaal der philosophischen Fakultät stattgefunden hatte und in deren Zentrum Martin Luther gestanden war. Er schrieb u. a.: „Ich habe gelesen, wie Du mit Deinem Stift unsere Theologen angegriffen und verletzt hast. Dies täte mir wahrlich leid, wenn es vergeblich wäre; und deshalb, damit Du Dir nicht als Sieger vorkommst, weil wir Heidelberger die Sache aufgegeben hätten (denn sonst hat uns unser Senior, der Wimpfeling, ganz hervorragend beschützt), will ich Dir einen Theologen entgegenhalten, zwar keinen von den unsrigen, der aber dieser Tage bei uns zu hören war... Es ist Martin, jener Kritiker der Ablässe, mit denen wir bisher viel zu nachsichtig waren... Mit Erasmus stimmt er in allem überein, außer daß er ihn in dem einen zu übertreffen scheint, das, was jener nur andeutet, dieser offen und frei verkündet"2. Beatus Rhenanus, der Schlettstädter Humanist, erscheint bei Bucer als kri- tischer antischolastischer Theologe; Wimpfeling als Vaterfigur einer Heidel- berger humanistischen Opposition, und Erasmus von Rotterdam, die überra- gende Gestalt des europäischen Humanismus, als konform mit dem Augusti- nermönch Martin Luther3. -

No radical alterations have been introduced, although a number of minor changes will be noted. I have added an Introduction on the origin and development of the Latin language, which it is hoped will prove interesting and instructive to the more ambitious pupil. At the end of the book will be found an Index to the Sources of the Illustrative Examples cited in the Syntax. C.E.B. ITHACA, NEW YORK, May 4, 1918 PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. The present book is a revision of my Latin Grammar originally published in 1895. Wherever greater accuracy or precision of statement seemed possible, I have endeavored to secure this. The rules for syllable division have been changed and made to conform to the prevailing practice of the Romans themselves. In the Perfect Subjunctive Active, the endings -īs, -īmus, -ītis are now marked long. The theory of vowel length before the suffixes -gnus, -gna, -gnum, and also before j, has been discarded. In the Syntax I have recognized a special category of Ablative of Association, and have abandoned the original doctrine as to the force of tenses in the Prohibitive. Apart from the foregoing, only minor and unessential modifications have been introduced. In its main lines the work remains unchanged.
