Quite frankly, it's a volume I would recommend not just to Spider-man fans, but also as an excellent introduction to Peter and his world, as we see most of his friends and enemies: Gwen, MJ, Harry, the Vulture, and the Green Goblin. I'm a relatively new Spider-Man fan and was drawn to this having been introduced to Gwen Stacy in the latest film version. It's an incredible story which defines Spider-Man even to this day. It's really emotional as Spider-Man deals with one crazed villain to the next still trying to cope with his loss. The artwork is fantastic and despite all the emotion Spider-Man's quips Wow. I quite like the fact it has narration in the form of captions for many parts of the story, I kind of wish they still existed. My version of this was the Marvel Pocketbooks version which goes from Issue and also includes the one shot "Marvel Team-up with Spider-Man and the Ghost Rider" for some unexplained reason it's more of a Ghost Rider story and doesn't feel right here. Which the first part is shocking with the death of gwen Stacy and leaves a question on how she dies but it also changes spiderman into a darker version which I thought was brilliant idea after what happened in the second part the fight with the green goblin was good. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT BEEMER, LAWRENCE W., Ph.D., June 2011, English American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal (204 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Robert Miklitsch Coining the term "fractal narrative," this dissertation examines the complex storytelling structure that is particular to contemporary American superhero comics. Whereas other mediums most often require narrative to function as self-contained and linear, individual superhero comics exist within a vast and intricate continuity that is composed of an indeterminate number of intersecting threads. Identical to fractals, the complex geometry of the narrative structure found in superhero comics when taken as a whole is constructed by the perpetual iteration of a single motif that was established at the genre's point of origin in Action Comics #1. The first appearance of Superman institutes all of the features and rhetorical elements that define the genre, but it also encodes it with the specific ideology of The New Deal era. In order to examine this fractal narrative structure, this dissertation traces historical developments over the last seven decades and offers a close reading Marvel Comics' 2006 cross-over event, Civil War.
