Miles Morales – A young teenager and a native. He’s a bright kid who’s been thrust into a new school and is having a hard time adjusting to this new environment. But he’s having an even harder time adjusting to his entirely new and unexpected life as a Spider-Man. With the help of some surprising new friends, Miles learns to unlock the hero inside himself.

Gwen Stacy – 15 years old, she is her world’s Spider-Woman known as Spider-Gwen! Intelligent and quick-witted, Gwen has a sharp sense of humor and is a natural . After getting pulled from her world and thrown into Miles’, she teams up with him to fight ’s nefarious villains.

Peter Parker – Miles’ reluctant may look like Peter Parker, but the years of life have taken a toll on his body, leaving him a little worse for wear these days. Spider-Man Noir – The Spider-Man of 1933, a Peter Parker from a parallel universe, is a more serious version of Spider-Man who fought crime during the Great Depression in 1933. Unlike most Spider-Men, Spider-Man Noir is only seen in black and white and has the old-fashioned perspective to , which makes it harder for him to adjust to Miles’ modern world.

Spider-Ham – It’s Spider-Man… as a cartoon pig! Spider-Ham, aka Peter Porker, is always the first one to crack a joke, but despite behaving like the ultimate ham, he takes his job as Spider- Man just as seriously and fights alongside the others with his own special kind of cartoon fury.

Jefferson – Jefferson is Miles’ slightly overbearing but loving father. When Jefferson was growing up, he and his younger brother Aaron used to work as petty criminals for the . When Jefferson met his wife, Rio, he left the criminal world behind, becoming a police officer and adapting a strict moral code. As a result, he wants to make sure that Miles has better opportunities than he had.

Shameik Moore – Miles Morales (voice) on May 4, 1995 in Atlanta, Georgia, Shameik Moore is a young singer, actor, and dancer. Moore developed a love for music and dance at an early age and gained popularity by uploading videos of covers and dance routines on YouTube. Moore has appeared on Tyler Perry’s series House of Pain and as a series regular on Nick Cannon’s series, Incredible Crew. In 2015, Moore booked his first lead role as Malcom in the coming-of-age story Dope (2015) and recorded several tracks for the film’s soundtrack alongside Pharrell Williams. More recently, Shameik starred in ’s original show The Get Down (2016-2017) as Shaolin Fantastic.

Jake Johnson – Peter B. Parker (voice)

Jake Johnson is an American actor and comedian best known for his role as Nick Miller in the Fox (2011-2018). Johnson attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts for the Dramatic Writing Department and went on to star in Let's Be Cops (2014), while also appearing in Paper Heart (2009), (2010), Safety Not Guaranteed (2012), 21 Jump Street (2012), (2013), (2015), The Mummy (2017), Tag (2018) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

Hailee Steinfeld – Gwen Stacy (voice)

Hailee Steinfeld is an American actress and singer who has been nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and four Critics Choice Awards. Steinfeld began acting at the age of 10 and appeared in several short films, television shows and commercials. She was chosen to play the role of Mattie Ross in (2010), for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2016, she starred in the teem dramedy (2016), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.

10 Kimiko Glenn – Peni Parker (voice)

Kimiko Elizabeth Glenn began acting at the Valley Youth Theater in Phoenix, Arizona when she was in fifth grade. During her freshman year of college in 2008, Glenn was cast as Thea in the first U.S. National Tour of Spring Awakening and in 2013 she booked her breakthrough role as Brook Soso in the Netflix comedy-drama series . Glenn also portrayed the supporting role of Liv Kurosawa in the drama-thriller film Nerve (2016), based on the young adult novel of the same name. In 2018, Glenn began starring as Harlow on Liza On Demand, as part of the main cast along with Travis Coles and creator .

Nicolas Cage -- Spider-Man Noir (voice)

Nicolas Cage aspired to act at an early age and initially studied theater at Beverly Hills High school before attending UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. His film debut began with a minor role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), and he has starred in a variety of films ever since. In 1995, Cage received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance as an alcoholic Hollywood writer in (1995) before coming to the attention of wider audiences with mainstream films, such as Face/Off (1997), (1997), and City of Angels (1998). He earned his second Academy Award nomination for his performance as Charlie and Donald Kaufman in Adaptation (2002). In 2002, Cage also directed the film Sonny.

John Mulaney – Spider-Ham (voice) Inspired by the character Ricky Ricardo on , knew he wanted to go into show business at age five. Mulaney studied English Literature and at his parents' alma mater, , where he joined the school's improv group, and met and , comedians who would become future collaborators. After graduating from Georgetown in 2004, Mulaney moved to with ambitions of a career in comedy, and was hired as an office assistant at .After a year, he pitched the idea for a parody of the I Love the '80s called I Love the '30s, which he developed along with Nick Kroll. Following his tenure at , Mulaney contributed writing to other TV projects including Maya & Marty, Documentary Now!, "Oh, Hello On Broadway" and the of James Franco. He also acted in supporting roles on television shows such as Crashing, , and . Mulaney currently provides the voice of a lead character on the animated Netflix series Big Mouth alongside his writing partner Nick Kroll, who co-created the show.

11 Luna Lauren Velez – Rio Morales (voice)

Luna Lauren Velez is most notably known for her roles as María LaGuerta on Dexter, Detective Nina Moreno on New York Undercover (1994), Dr. Gloria Nathan on Oz, and Elena on Ugly Betty. After graduating from high school, Velez received a scholarship from the Alvin Ailey Dance School and went on to perform in the national touring company of the musical Dreamgirls. With her varied performances and Afro-Latin background and appearance, Velez's success is considered a breakthrough for Latina actresses who do not fit the stereotypical "Europeanized Hollywood" version of Latin females. In 1995, she made her film debut as Lisette Linares in the movie I Like It Like That and was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award and The Desi Award for Best Lead Actress. In 2006, she won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2006 Long Island International Film Expo, and in 2010 she received the Rita Moreno HOLA Award for Excellence from the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA).

Brian Tyree Henry – Jefferson Davis (voice) Brian Tyree Henry is known for his performance in Atlanta, Widows (2018), If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). Henry attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia as a business major-turned-actor in the early 2000s, and received his master's degree from Yale School of Drama. Henry was part of the original cast of The Book of Mormon and his work in on Broadway earned him a nomination for the 2018 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. His television roles include Alfred "Paper Boi" Miles in Atlanta, for which he received a nomination for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding in a Comedy Series, and Tavis Brown in . In 2017, Henry guest starred in the NBC TV series in the episode "Memphis" as Ricky, receiving a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award.

Bob Persichetti

Bob Persichetti began his career in the film industry at Walt Disney Animation Studios. In 1997, he was an in-between artist on (1997) and Mulan (1998), and a rough in-betweener on films such as (1999), Emporor’s New Groove (2000) and (2002). More recently, he is known for his work co-writing the 2016 critically acclaimed animated feature The Little Prince (2016), currently available on Netflix. His previous credits include serving as head of story on DreamWorks Animation Studios’ (2011) for which he also voiced the Ohh Cat, as well as story artist for Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) and 2 (2004).

Peter Ramsey A lifelong resident of , , Peter Ramsey grew up in the Crenshaw area, and graduated from Palisades High School before attending UCLA. Ramsey is best known as the director of Dreamworks Animation's 2012 feature film (2012). He also directed the Halloween TV special Monsters vs. Aliens: Pumpkins from Outer Space (2009) as well as serving as a story artist on several of Dreamworks Animation's feature films. Prior to joining Dreamworks, he worked as a on a notable number of live action feature films, including Backdraft (1991), Boyz n the (1991), Bram Stoker's (1992), Minority Report (2002), Cast Away (2000), Independence Day (1996), Being John Malkovich (1999), Fight Club (1999), and (2003), among many others. Ramsey's directing skills were honed early, as Director on live action feature films including Godzilla (1998), Tank Girl (1995), Higher Learning (1995), and Poetic Justice (1993).

13 Rodney Rothman

Rothman previously served as a producer or writer on the films (2014), Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), Popstar (2016) and Get Him to the Greek (2010). In television, Rothman was hired as a staff writer at The Late Show with when he was 21 years old. At 24, he was promoted to head writer, making him the youngest head writer in the program’s history. While serving as head writer, he was nominated for five Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program and helped the show win three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Variety, Comedy or Musical Program. In addition, Rothman served as a writer and a supervising producer on the series Undeclared, and created the HBO comedy pilot $5.15/Hr. along with director . Rothman is the author of the best-selling nonfiction comedy novel Early Bird. His writing has also appeared in The New Yorker, GQ, , The New York Times Magazine, and McSweeney’s Quarterly. His piece “My Fake Job” was included in The Best American Nonrequired Reading, edited by Dave Eggers.

14 ON THE PREMISE

News that Sony was planning on rejuvenating the Spider-Man franchise by developing an animated comedy followed the November 2014 hacking of Sony’s computers, and at the 2015 CinemaCon, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman made an official announcement. Inspired by Miles Morales’ comic and the relationship with his family, Phil Lord had written a script for the film by June 2016 and the studio chose Bob Persichetti to direct. Persichetti noted that there had been several Spider-Man films made already, so the first step was to decide why this film needed to be made, and the answer for the creative team was to tell the new and unique story of Miles Morales, who had yet to appear in any film. In an interview with Den of Geek, Phil Lord stated, “We thought that was such a refreshing way to look at the character. So, we went to that, and from there, we wondered, gosh, to make it like a movie event, there's something neat about him crashing, or rather, Peter crashing into Miles' world for a little bit. Let's see where he's at a little bit later in his career”.

ON THE RESEARCH

There have been many, many versions of Spider-Man over the past five decades. IGN explained, "In many cases, these alternate Spider-Men aren't so terribly different from the original. On some worlds, Peter Parker stayed married and had a child. In others he might be a gun-toting vigilante or still a teenager learning the ropes of the superhero game. And on still others, it wasn't Peter Parker who was bit by the radioactive spider at all, but someone else." Directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman had their work cut out for them when trying to figure out how to marry these Spider-People in a way that would allow them to all come together to work together to defeat a villain.

15 ON THE ANIMATION TECHNOLOGY

Lord and Miller wanted the film to feel like “you walked inside of a ,” and were excited to tell the story in a way that live-action films could not. Persichetti concurred, feeling that animation was the best medium with which to honor the style of the comics, allowing the production team to adapt 70-year-old techniques seen in comic artwork into the film’s visual language. It took almost a year for the production team to create 10 seconds of footage that they were happy with, and then the animation work on the film developed from there. The directors initially worked with a single and eventually collaborated with 142 by August 2018, making this the largest animation crew that had ever used for a film.

The CGI animation for the film was combined with "line work and painting and dots and all sorts of comic book techniques" to make it look like it was created by hand, which was described as "a living painting". This was achieved by artists taking rendered frames from the CGI animators and working on top of them in 2D, with the goal of making every frame of the film "look like a comic panel". To make it feel more like a comic book, it was animated without motion blur, and rather than using animation principles like squash and stretch they came up with substitute versions of them; "so that in texture and feel it felt different, but it still achieved the same goal — to either feel weight or anticipation or impact or things like that".

Different comic styles were emulated throughout the film for the different characters, with Spider-Gwen's animation based on the designs in her comics, Spider-Man Noir having a black- and-white color scheme, and Spider-Ham being designed as "cartoony" as possible. Craig Kellman designed the exaggerated look for Spider-Ham, while Justin K. Thompson served as overall .

Animation co-director Patrick O'Keefe said that committing fully to each Spider's unique art style was like "making five movies". Persichetti described this experience as a combination of the effects of an old-fashioned hand-drawn multiplane camera and a modern virtual reality environment.

16 ON THE MUSIC

Daniel Pemberton is a multi-Golden Globe, Emmy, and BAFTA Award-nominated English composer. Pemberton completed his breakthrough score to director ’s film in 2013 and has also scored films for some of the world’s acclaimed directors including ’s Steve Jobs (2015) and ’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015).

Republic Records released a full soundtrack album featuring artists like , Post Malone, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne to represent what a teen like Morales would listen. Sony Classical Records released a separate album containing Pemberton’s score.

Daniel Pemberton says about the soundtrack: "It has been such a pleasure to enter the Spider- Verse with such an amazing array of collaborators and truly groundbreaking directors. I absolutely love this film, I love the risks taken, the story, the astonishing art style, everything. I feel so lucky to have been a part of it and to have the opportunity to create a whole new musical universe for one of the world's most beloved superheroes - Spider-Man."

"Daniel's innovative score combines a multi-verse of techniques, including intricate DJ scratching, powerful electronic synths and soaring orchestral arrangements," said Spring Aspers, Head of Music, Creative Affairs Worldwide for Sony Pictures Entertainment's Motion Picture Group. "It's a perfect blend of influences that captures Miles Morales's Brooklyn world and the film's inclusive, optimistic message of heroism: that when it's time to step up, anyone can wear ."
