We are here at Fordham University on April 7, 2006 with Jimmy Merchant, an original and founding member of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, who has also had a career as an artist. And with us today, doing the interviews, are Alessandro Buffa, Lorreta Dosorna, Brian Purnell, and Mark Naison. Jimmy, can you tell us a little about your family and where they came from originally? Jimmy Merchant (JM): My mom basically came from Philadelphia. My dad – his family is from the Bahamas. He – my dad – was shifted over to the south as a youngster. His mother was from the Bahamas and she moved into the South – South Carolina, something like that – and he grew up there. -

TANENBAUM MY OPINION – A CRITIQUE: The injustice of a rush to judgment – The Central Park Jogger Case On December 19, 2002 a colossal injustice occurred when then Manhattan District Attorney Morgenthau consented to the Central Park jogger five defendants’ motion to vacate their convictions. During the trials of these five defendants, the Manhattan D.A. was well aware and presented evidence to the trial jurors that a sixth unknown assailant participated in the rape of the female jogger. The D.A. revealed at the defendants’ 1990 trials that with respect to the female jogger, semen was recovered at the crime scene not attributable to any of the five defendants, but to an unknown culpable participant. The defendants were also convicted for beating and robbing and attacking some of the eight other innocent defenseless victims during their vicious nighttime rampage through Central Park on April 19, 1989. Thirteen years later, with the statute of limitations having run, convicted and sentenced to serve a life term of imprisonment for rape and murder, the sixth assailant, Matias Reyes, whose DNA was found at the crime scene, has come forward to say he raped the jogger and he did it alone. With no hearing held, no testimony taken, no cross examination, and no corroboration of Reyes’ statement, Manhattan D.A. Morgenthau moved to set aside these jury verdicts. As a further reflection of the Manhattan D.A.’s abrogation of his duties and responsibilities, the vacatur was in violation of established legal precedent. By so acting, the Manhattan -

FEAR OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION What made the teenager a source of anxiety during the 1950s? OVERVIEW After World War II, America experienced unparalleled growth and prosperity. The children born during the early years of the postwar “baby boom” were becoming teenagers by the late 1950s. Because of the burgeoning economy, many middle-class teens had more leisure time and more spending power than previous generations of young people. As examined in the Birth of American Teenager lesson, teenagers of the 1950s began exerting a growing influence on American life and commerce. But the rapid rise of this growing demographic also unleashed a wave of anxiety among adults. It was a fear both real and imagined. The number of crimes committed by teenagers was, in fact, rising throughout the nation. But there was also a level of intense anxiety that seemed unwarranted concerning the new power of the emerging teen demographic. Teenagers seemed to be challenging the social fabric of America. Many questioned, and even blamed, movies, comic books, and Rock and Roll for its influence on the rising misbehavior of youth. According to a lengthy report on juvenile delinquency in the 1955 Saturday Evening Post, crime committed by teenagers increased by a drastic 45% between 1950 and 1955. There were more extreme cases of teenage violence as well, like that of Charlie Starkweather, a white teenager from a working class family in Lincoln, Nebraska. When Starkweather went on a two-month murder spree in 1958, killing eleven people in the Midwest, his gruesome actions challenged the notion that teenage crime was relegated to poor, urban areas. -

Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley. -

Bennett Capers* ABSTRACT We have become a surveillance state. Cameras—both those controlled by the state, and those installed by private entities—watch our every move, at least in public. For the most part, courts have deemed this public surveillance to be beyond the purview of the Fourth Amendment, meaning that it goes largely unregulated—a cause for alarm for many civil libertarians. This Article challenges these views and suggests that we must listen to communities in thinking about cameras and other surveillance technologies. For many communities, public surveillance not only has the benefit of deterring crime and aiding in the apprehension of criminals. -
