Labrador Fishery for “Culture Days” 2010 The salt-cod fishery was at one time essential to Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy. The Labrador Fishery began to become prominent in the 1820s, when increasing numbers of fishers started migrating to Labrador to fish each summer. Those who travelled to Labrador had to spend weeks or even months away from home. As a result, some fishers brought their families with them; this was both for company and to help cure the catch. Stationers and Floaters The Labrador fishery consisted of two groups of workers: stationers and floaters. Islanders who set up living quarters on the shore of Labrador and fished each day in small boats were known as stationers, while floaters lived on board their vessels and sailed up and down the Labrador coast, often travelling further north than stationers. Floaters packed their fish in salt and brought it back to Newfoundland at the end of each season to be dried there, while stationers salted and cured their fish on shore shortly after catching it. Both methods had their drawbacks. Labrador’s damp weather often resulted in a poorer cure, while floaters risked damaging their catch during the long voyage home. Sharemen Fishers going to Labrador could work as sharemen who shared profits from the fishing venture. In a floater enterprise, sharemen prepared the vessels and gear for the Labrador fishery, starting in early May. When the fishery ended, usually in October each year, the catch from the voyage was shared. Half the catch went to the vessel owner to pay for expenses; the other half was equally distributed among the sharemen. -

REVISED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT 4.2.2 Wildlife 4.2.2.1 Caribou Labrador’s caribou (Rangifer tarandus) can be classified into two main groups, the migratory and sedentary (also known as woodland) ecotypes, which are distinguished by their use of calving grounds or fidelity to specific calving sites. Migratory caribou travel large distances, occupy large home ranges, and aggregate during calving periods. Conversely, sedentary caribou display limited movements, occupy smaller home ranges, and tend to disperse during the calving period (Schaefer et al. 2000; Bergerud et al. 2008). The Project occupies a portion of Western Labrador which overlaps with the range of the George River (GR) Herd. Straddling the Québec-Labrador peninsula, the GR Herd is one of the world’s largest Rangifer populations, with population estimates peaking at almost 800,000 individuals in the 1980’s (Couturier et al. 1996; Russell et al. 1996, Rivest et al. 1998). This area of western Labrador overlaps the GR Herd as a portion of their winter range (Jacobs 1996). In addition to the GR Herd, there is another migratory ecotype that is recognized on the Ungava Peninsula and known as the Rivière-aux-Feuilles (‘Leaf River’) (RAF) Herd. Existing and recognized sedentary populations include the Lac Joseph (LJ) Herd located south of the Assessment Area, and the Red Wine Mountains (RWM), the Joir River (JR), and the Mealy Mountains (MM) Herds all much further to the east. The Mealy Mountains act as a geographic barrier separating this herd from the other herds of Labrador, but the lack of a geographic barrier between the other three sedentary herds results in an overlap of herd ranges (Schmelzer et al. -

FINAL REPORT Economic Footprint for the Canadian Commercial Helicopter Industry Photo Credit: Talon Gillis PREPARED FOR The Helicopter Association of Canada PREPARED BY InterVISTAS Consulting Inc. 11 May 2016 Executive Summary Commercial helicopters in Canada are the workhorses that play an integral role by supporting activities in many different industry sectors and provide many benefits to the economy. Helicopters are often the only effective type of transportation option available to reach many remote or distant locations. Helicopters play an important social role in society, by leading and supporting lifesaving missions. E.g., Photo Credit: Talon Gillis medical emergencies and search and rescue. The commercial helicopter fleet is a growing and important part of the Canadian national registry of aircraft. Helicopters facilitate business and commerce in a broad spectrum of industries. E.g., mineral, oil and gas, mining, tourism, and filmmaking. Without helicopters, these sectors would be higher cost and some developments particularly in the resource sector, simply would not occur. A diverse and growing industry, Canada’s commercial helicopters contribute directly to employment across the country Canada’s commercial and to the national economy through their operations and activities. Helicopters serve and support a number of sectors of helicopter industry is the Canadian economy. Beyond passenger and cargo significant, growing, transportation, they are essential to medevac and emergency services, and for linking northern and remote communities to diverse and saves those in the south. This study examines the current economic lives impacts generated by the commercial helicopter industry in Canada and in the individual provinces and territories. In Canada, there are currently over 2,800 helicopters registered, of which over 1,800 are commercially registered. -

“To advance the scale model railroading community across the Eastern Canada Division’s region through education, advocacy, standards and social interaction” Issue #4 June 2019 Iconic Buildings "Hey, I know that place!" Unique structures help to define where you are on a model railway. In this case, the Carleton Community Centre in West Saint John NB will form the anchor for a pair of modules our ECD Secretary, Bob Henry, is constructing. He could not find a kit that even vaguely resembled the prototype, so this building was constructed using photographs. Lumber, plywood and Masonite formed the shape of the basic structure, then the photos were applied in layers to enhance the sense of depth. Some trim and chimneys to be added. Cultural Connections K-12 Arts and Cultural Strategy
Cultural Connections K-12 Arts and Cultural Strategy Music, theatre arts, and visual arts, along with other forms of expression, help a culture to define its identity and explore its heritage. Cultural Connections, a provincial arts and cultural strategy for K-12 education, aims to increase the presence of cultural content in the school curriculum and foster links between artists and students in the school environment. Through this integrated strategy, Newfoundland and Labrador history and culture will be affirmed as a key feature of the K-12 curriculum. Students from the K-12 system will be encouraged to develop foundational skills in music, theatre, visual arts and creative writing, which may prepare them to aspire to professional training and career opportunities in the fine and performing arts. Students will develop a critical awareness of the role of the arts in creating and reflecting heritage. Students, and those who witness their expression of the arts, will also come to respect the contributions of individuals and cultural groups to the arts, in local, national, and international contexts, and will recognize the value of the arts as a record of human experience. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, especially the younger population, will grow in their understanding and appreciation of the unique culture in Newfoundland and Labrador. À titre de prolongement de la Transcanadienne, ce service forme un lien essentiel pour relier la province de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador au reste du pays. Non seulement les résidants et les touristes utilisent ce service pour voyager à destination et en provenance de la province, mais le service est également crucial aux importations et exportations de la province et à ce titre, le service est un enjeu à la fois régional et national. L'unique actionnaire de Marine Atlantique, le gouvernement du Canada, fournit un financement important à la société et tous les choix définissant le futur de la société doivent incorporer un équilibre entre l'attribution responsable des ressources publiques et l’offre d’un réseau de transport national viable et d’un niveau de service acceptable.
