Abstract The Kirchberg beds (Ottnangian/?Karpatian) at IIIerlcirchbcrg ncar Uim and the overlaying Upper Freshwatermolasse were investigated with regard to their Iithology and thcir fossil fauna and flora. The Kirchbcrg beds, which are 15 to 20 m thiclc, are subdivided into 8 biostratigraphical horizons. These hori zons are corrdated with the old subdivision of KAANZ (1904) and ScHlICKUM (1963). The ecological comlitions during the sedimentation of the Kir~berg beds are discussed on basi~ of the occurcncc of certain fossils. For the horizons 2, 3 aod 6 a connectton to the central Paratethys dunng Ottnangian time is postulated. The fish Fauna found proves a stratigraphical position of horizons 1 to 6 in the Ottnangian stage of t~e Paratethys subdivision. Horizons 7 and 8 cannot be placed exactly, they may belong to the Ottnan gtan stage or to the Karpatian stage. InhaJtsverzeichnis 1. Einleitung . 136 2. The wild bees of the island were studied extensively by the native George Mavro- moustakis, a world-renowned bee taxonomist, who collected extensively on the island from 1916 to 1957 and summarised his results in a series of eight Cyprus-specific papers published from 1949 [“1948”] to 1957.

Titus Michael Kennedy UNISA Student # 48120324 September 26, 2013 __________________ ___________________ SIGNATURE DATE iii ABSTRACT A Demographic Analysis of Late Bronze Age Canaan: Ancient Population Estimates and Insights through Archaeology by Titus Michael Kennedy This thesis is a demographic analysis of Late Bronze Age Canaan (ca. 1550/1500-1200/1150 BCE), undertaken through the use of archaeological and anthropological data. The purpose is to establish estimates for the settlement population, nomadic population, nuclear family size, house size, sex ratio, and life expectancy of the people of Canaan during the Late Bronze Age. Previous studies have not addressed these issues in detail, nor had data from the entire scope of Canaan been considered, nor had a precise methodology been developed or used for estimating specific settlement populations and nomadic populations for Canaan during the Late Bronze Age. Thus, additional aspects of the thesis include the development and use of a new methodology for estimating ancient populations and a database of all of the Late Bronze Age sites in Canaan—both archaeological and textual.
