CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST. Tyler, The Creator. WAP (feat. Megan Thee Stallion) (Explicit) At the dawn of the ’90s, the trip hop wave overtook the UK with an electronica sound influenced by Jamaican music and hip hop beats. With their chloroformed rhythms and heavy ambience, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Morcheeba and several other outfits invented a kind of dark, futuristic and often cinematic soul music. Here’s a spotlight on 10 albums from a genre with blurred sonic borders but a definitive musical influence. As they neared their fortieth birthdays, Killer Mike (a black rapper from Atlanta with close links to OutKast) and El-P (a white Brooklyn b-boy and proponent of experimental rap) formed Run The Jewels, a rap supergroup which could easily have been yet another addition to a long list of hiphop misfires. But on the contrary, they are now an institution, a group that delights audiences and awakens consciences. Their new album RTJ4 is their most political and devastating. Let us take a look back at Killer Mike and El-P’s story. After his major success with a triple album, he went on to repeat this with a double one! Kamasi Washington charms and intrigues well beyond the jazz sphere. Working with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, and most importantly as the head of the West Coast Get Down collective, the charismatic saxophonist from Los Angeles brings an incredible wave of excitement to the contemporary jazz scene. Duke Deuce: Memphis Massacre 2. I became obsessed with Memphis rapper Duke Deuce after I heard his song “Crunk Ain’t Dead.” The song has everything that makes a hit song. Catchy lyrics, and bouncy fun beat, and a music video that may be low budget, but captures the energy of the song perfectly. The man can also dance! You gotta check out the video. I’m stunned how this song never charted and wasn’t a hit. Even so, Duke Deuce excites me as an artist as he can make southern trap bangers and hardcore menacing rap tracks that showcase his witty lyricism. His second project Memphis Massacre 2 dropped in February and it’s a project I feel got completely overlooked this year. While it may not be one of the best albums of the year, it’s still a very solid album and a good showcase for Duke Deuce as an artist. The project starts off with “Feel Like It” which is a menacing banger full of braggadocio. The instrumental sounds epic with its southern flavoring and its almost orchestral sound. Duke Deuce wants the world to know that he’s killing the rap game cause he feels like it. It’s not as fun as some of his other songs, but it doesn’t have to be since Duke Deuce can make what he wants because as the song says, he feels like it. He continues to sound like a force to be reckoned with the southern trap banger “BHZ.” I feel like I should be driving a fancy car with the top down listening to this song. The song is split into two parts and they both are absolutely mean sounding. Deuce has memorable lines like “Say the wrong thing, get beat to sleep, uh/Plenty G’s, plenty keys, we know plenty fiends/Pop a bean, hit your scene, now we can’t go to sleep/Gang banging, fuckin’ bitches, teachin’ snitches with some stitches.” This is not a man to mess with. The next track is a remix of “Crunk Ain’t Dead” featuring southern legends , Lil Jon and Project Pat. While I don’t like it as much as the original, it’s still a good alternative and stands on its own. Lil Jon’s iconic scream rapping works incredibly when he’s saying the chorus and adds even more energy to a song that is already so energetic. Juicy J and Project Pat provide great verses as well and fit incredibly well over the instrumental. I however love Juicy J’s verse just because of his voice and flow. Juicy J is a rapper that has been able to stay relevant because of his infectious voice and his ability to rap on almost anything. Overall the remix is a very solid song that is almost as good as the original. Two of my favorite tracks on this album are “Bad News” and “Crunk Aint Dead Mob” which features Lil Thad and Lil Yachty. “Bad News” is a dark brooding track with heavy bass and flutes in the background. This song makes me want to do illegal activities, (not really, but it gives off menacing energy.) The song is about him overcoming the haters and how going against him will be bad for you. “Crunk Ain’t Dead Mob” is another banger full of braggadocio and declarations of being someone not to cross. Lil Yachty has a memorable verse on this song and decides not to go the melodic route rapping about being wealthy and how he’s better than you. While some people don’t like it when Lil Yatchy decides to use hardcore raps, I never found that to be an issue for me. All the artists have great chemistry on this track making a highlight of the project. The last song on the project is a slow-burning track called “Big Dog.” The song has beautiful piano keys over a banging bass. This track actually features Duke Deuce singing and shows him reflecting on his come-up and where he is now. It’s a great way to end the project as it shows Duke Deuce’s ability to make emotional songs that sound like they are coming from the heart. The project overall is solid and showcases Deuce’s ability to make hardcore menacing raps while also being able to make party anthems and emotional songs. If you missed this project earlier this year, nows the time to check it out. Duke Deuce Drops ‘Memphis Massacre 2’ [Album] On Wednesday Feb. 19, 2020 … Memphis native rapper, and the city’s newly proclaimed “King of Crunk” Duke Deuce — has released another “head banger” album titled, “Memphis Massacre 2” — a sequel to his 2018 debut. He has also released the “Crunk Ain’t Dead” ( Remix) to the trending visual with over 10 million views on Youtube — featuring Lil Jon , and “ ’s” Juicy J and DJ Paul. The song was sampled and revived from Project Pat’s “ If You Ain’t From My Hood “. If this record hasn’t gotten the attention of the entire south’s music scene, yet… what will? Deuce is forcefully making an entrance into the rap game, and he is not releasing the pressure anytime soon. He’s even gotten the northern region hip to the southern “crunk” styles of rap. Duke Deuce , born (March 2, 1993) as Patavious Isom — grew up in the used to be called community, and my old stomping grounds of “Whitehaven” now called, “Blackhaven” (also the intro title on his debut album, Memphis Massacre) — which was heavily stamped in the early 90’s, back when Juicy J and Dj Paul were passing out their cassette tapes and breaking down barriers with their unique sounds. They were also the originators of “crunk music” (which came from the style dance of the 90’s — called “buck jumping”) — and you can certainly tell that Duke’s music and highly energetic “style dance”, is deeply rooted to Memphis’ early history of rap music. But it all started with his father, producer Duke Nitty (whom actually has production on the new project), — who taught him early on as a child, about music and how to make beats. So, he’s not new to the game. His father’s credits include projects by Gangsta Blac , Nasty Nardo , Dem Thugs and Mobb Lyfe . I found out about Duke Deuce back in 2018, when i was a radio personality for a former online radio station, which happened to be in the same building as the studio he recorded in. His engineer “Yo” (SE Studios) or Mario, his real name — came in the room while I was on air, and kept saying “Mane, I got a dude in the studio right now who just signed with YRN and he gotta banger!” I brushed it off at first because, I was in my zone and then, he (Yo) came back in the room and insisted that I play his (Duece) — first, not yet heard of single, — “Whole Lotta”. Once I put the record on and heard that catchy and game-changing ad-lib… “ WHAT THA FUUUUUUUCK. “ and I couldn’t stop turning up to it after that. And… til this day I have not stopped playing it. SERIOUSLY. LOL. After his first hit singles, “Whole Lotta” and “Chosen” hit the streets and signing with Atlanta’s QC label, Duke was lighting the flame that soon, became a torch for his newly-found success. Once he dropped his debut album Memphis Massacre” (solely produced by “ Hitt Kidd “), the crunk juice had entered the city’s bloodstream. There’s even a sample of Yo Gotti’s “F*** Yo B****!” single from his 2003 album, “Life” . He has since then, dropped hit singles like “Grab A…” produced by grammy nominated producer/songwriter, Tay Keith — and “ Yeh ” which gave full exposure to his stylish and gangsta dance moves — that have both hit over 1 million plus views on Youtube. I admire the fierce mentality that he (Duke) has garnered over the short amount of time that he’s been in the game, as well as, the homage he’s paying to artists who’ve paved the way for him. I know that this project will not be disappointing and will certainly raise more eyebrows. I can’t wait to see who he has featured on it.
