A combination of Jamaican dancehall, American hip-hop, Caribbean rhythms and Spanish wit, reggaeton has, since its birth in the early 90s, shaken the world of pop music time and time again. From DJ Playero’s first mixtapes to Daddy Yankee’s “Barrio Fino” and Don Chezina’s “Tra- Tra-Tra, Puerto Rican musicians and their Colombian counterparts in Medellin have done their utmost to take over the world. In the last decade, they have done just that thanks to artists such as Luis Fonsi, J. Balvin and Bad Bunny. Read on for 10 of the genre’s most important albums. Reggaeton won’t be going anywhere any time soon. Nas became a legend at 20 years old. On his first attempt, this rapper coming from Queensbridge, New York, was already everything: an extraordinary technician, a striking narrator, a savior. But what happens next? How to evolve? How to surpass yourself when the industry regards you as the chosen one? How to age in a youth music when your first opus is your supreme work? The great oak tree of heavy metal contains more than meets the eye. Its mighty branches, visible to the average rock fan, consist of thrash, hair, nu, black, 'core, and death metal—all arguably the genre's more iconic iterations. But beneath its tremendous trunk are ever-growing roots that stretch endlessly into a vast underground of niche stylistic offshoots. There are literally dozens of subgenres—and many subgenres within those subgenres —throughout the heavy metal lexicon, and it would take a lifetime to become fully versed in all of them. Here we zoom in on five unique and compelling lesser-known metal subgenres that aren't obvious entry points for the average headbanger, but every fan of aggressive music should be familiar with these sounds. Project Pat – Ghetty Green (CD) (1999) (FLAC + 320 kbps) Then known almost exclusively for his affiliation with Three 6 Mafia, Project Pat introduced his large self to the world on Ghetty Green, the solo debut album he recorded with producers DJ Paul and Juicy J. Like most other Hypnotized Minds releases during the late ’90s, Ghetty Green raised the bar for hardcore rap. While Three 6 Mafia had always come hard on its albums, Project Pat isn’t a collective like the Mafia but rather one man — a very large man with a large temper and large presence. Thus, his debut was a big one and, although Ghetty Green doesn’t have a widely known song like “Chickenhead,” it does offer several appearances by the Cash Money Millionaires, who were similarly making a name for themselves in the South at the time. If you want to hear the roots of Memphis hardcore rap, you need to hear this album. It’s a landmark. 01 – North Memphis 02 – Represent It (feat. Noreaga & Tear Da Club Up Thugs) 03 – Out There 04 – Niggas Got Me Fucked Up 05 – You Know The Biss (feat. DJ Paul) 06 – Choices (feat. Lord Infamous) 07 – Ballers (feat. Big Tymers, Hot Boyz & Three 6 Mafia) 08 – Run A Train ( 09 – Rinky Dink/Whatever Ho (feat. Hypnotize Camp Posse) 10 – Up There (feat. ENG 350: THE HISTORY OF HIP-HOP With your host, Dr. Russell A. Potter, a.k.a. Professa RAp Monday - Thursday, 6:30-8:30, Craig-Lee 252 http://350hiphop.blogspot.com/ In its rise to the top of the American popular music scene, Hip-hop has taken on all comers, and issued beatdown after beatdown. Yet how many of its fans today know the origins of the music? Sure, people might have heard something of Afrika Bambaataa or Grandmaster Flash, but how about the Last Poets or Grandmaster CAZ? For this class, we’ve booked a ride on the wayback machine which will take us all the way back to Hip-hop’s precursors, including the Blues, Calypso, Ska, and West African griots. From there, we’ll trace its roots and routes through the ‘parties in the park’ in the late 1970’s, the emergence of political Hip-hop with Public Enemy and KRS-One, the turn towards “gangsta” style in the 1990’s, and on into the current pantheon of rappers. Along the way, we’ll take a closer look at the essential elements of Hip-hop culture, including Breaking (breakdancing), Writing (graffiti), and Rapping, with a special look at the past and future of turntablism and digital sampling. Our two required textbook are Bradley and DuBois’s Anthology of Rap (Yale University Press) and Neal and Forman’s That's the Joint: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader are both available at the RIC campus store. Films shown in part or in whole will include Bamboozled, Style Wars, The Freshest Kids: A History of the B-Boy, Wild Style, and Zebrahead; there will is also a course blog with a discussion board and a wide array of links to audio and text resources at http://350hiphop.blogspot.com/ WRITTEN WORK: An informal response to our readings and listenings is due each week on the blog.

Kubrin1 and Erik Nielson2 Abstract In criminal proceedings across the United States, rap music lyrics are being introduced as evidence of a defendant’s guilt. In this article, we draw attention to this disturbing practice, what we call ‘‘rap on trial,’’ and explore its context, describe its elements and contours, and consider its broader significance. We first offer historical context, demonstrating that although the widespread use of rap lyrics in criminal trials may be a relatively recent phenomenon, it resides within a long tradition of antagonism between the legal establishment and hip-hop culture, one that can be traced back to hip-hop’s earliest roots.

  • Megan Thee Stallion, Fever
REVIEWS Megan Thee Stallion Fever 8.0 1501 CERTIFIED / 300 ENTERTAINMENT • 2019 BY: TAYLOR CRUMPTON / MAY 23 2019 RAP Megan Thee Stallion’s debut is steeped in sex, pimpin, and power; it sounds like a once and future Houston rap classic. hen MeganMeganMegan TheeTheeThee StallionStallionStallion’s “Big Ole Freak” landed on Billboard’s Hot 100 in April, it was a testament to years of viral W freestyles and her devoted “hotties,” whose faithful support on social media helped the song rise to mainstream recognition. The 24- year-old has been prolific—her evolution is displayed through the invention of various rap personas, such as Tina Snow, Megan Thee Stallion, and Hot Girl Meg, the turn-up queen with serious ambition on her mind. “We have so many legends and so many greats,” she recently said of her hometown of Houston, Texas. “But I don’t feel like we ever really had a female rapper from Houston or Texas shut that shit down.” With her debut project Fever, she hopes to succeedMegan in doing Thee just Stallion that. At its core is the intersection of two beautiful rap legacies: the women rap tradition started by MCMCMC LyteLyteLyte and QueenQueenQueen LatifahLatifahLatifah, and Southern rap dynasty ushered in by Houston’s GetoGetoGeto BoysBoysBoys and UndergroundUndergroundUnderground KingsKingsKings. From the first song, Megan weaponizes misogynymisogynymisogyny through the execution of bars worthy of XXL Freshman Class President. South Park’s influence, home to fellow Houston legends ScarfaceScarfaceScarface and Lil’Lil’Lil’ KekeKekeKeke, is felt throughout “Hood Rat Shit,” which transitions into an ass-and clit-eating tutorial for her male tricks on “Pimpin,” where the spirit of Houston’s pimp tradition is embedded within every word.
