Joseph A. Rosen Rhythm andBluesCruise,Rhythm October 2007. onthe Legendary Joe LouisWalker In 1985, after a decade of playing and singing nothing but gospel music with a quartet called the Spiritual Corinthians, 35-year-old Joe Louis Walker decided to get back to the blues. The San Francisco–born singer-guitarist had begun playing blues when he was 14, at first with a band of relatives and then with blues-singing pimp Fillmore Slim before becoming a fixture at the Matrix, the city’s preeminent rock club during the psychedelic Summer of Love, backing such visiting artists as Earl Hooker and Magic Sam. Michael Bloomfield became a close friend and mentor. The two musicians lived together for a period, and the famous guitarist even produced a Walker demo for Buddah Records, though nothing came of it. Then, in 1975, Walker walked away from the blues completely in order to escape the fast life and the drugs and alcohol associated with it that he saw negatively affecting Bloomfield and other musician friends. Walker knew nothing about the blues business when he started doing blues gigs again around the Bay Area with a band he’d put together, as a member of Oakland blues singer-guitarist Haskell “Cool Papa” Sadler’s band, and (for a tour of Europe) with the ad hoc Mississippi Delta Blues Band.

  • Responsibilities of the Music Executive
Chapter II Responsibilities of the Music Executive Frederick Miller, Dean Emeritus School of Music, DePaul University Administrative Organization in Academia In virtually all academic institutions, ultimate authority rests with a governing board, that is, trustees, regents, whatever. As a practical matter, much of the board’s authority is delegated to the president, who retains as much as he or she needs to do the job and passes along the rest to the next person in the institutional chain of command, typically the provost. That person, in turn, keeps what is needed for that office and gives the rest to the deans and department chairs in this downward flow of authority in academia. Whatever title the music executive may hold—dean, chair, and so on—the position will typically be thought of as “middle management.” Others in the academic hierarchy— president, provost, vice presidents—are seen as “upper management,” and as some cynics might view it, hardly anyone is lower than a dean. However accurate this may be, mid-level administrative positions in higher education possess an unmistakable fragility. It stems from the fact that while we may be tenured in our faculty positions, at some professorial rank, we are not tenured in our administrative positions. We are positioned in the hierarchy between faculty, many or most of whom are tenured in their roles, and the upper administration, who typically are less subject to periodic, formal review. We spend much of our time in adversarial relationships with one of these groups on behalf of the other. That is, we may be pressing the upper administration on behalf of some faculty need.

  • How to Use Inclusion Riders to Increase Gender Diversity in the Music Industry
Seton Hall University eRepository @ Seton Hall Law School Student Scholarship Seton Hall Law 2019 Can't Hold Us Down”1: How to Use Inclusion Riders to Increase Gender Diversity in the Music Industry Laura Kozel Follow this and additional works at: https://scholarship.shu.edu/student_scholarship Part of the Law Commons Recommended Citation Kozel, Laura, "Can't Hold Us Down”1: How to Use Inclusion Riders to Increase Gender Diversity in the Music Industry" (2019). Law School Student Scholarship. 1019. https://scholarship.shu.edu/student_scholarship/1019 ABSTRACT Despite improvements in female visibility and a number of movements pushing for equality in recent years, gender imbalance continues to plague the world of entertainment. While strides have been made to achieve parity in the film industry, little progress has been made to achieve the same in music where the disproportionality of females is even worse. Females are chronically underrepresented across virtually all aspects of music, both on-stage and off-stage, whether it be as musicians or as executives, which subsequently effects the amount of nominations, as well as awards that females in music receive. The implementation of inclusion riders in Hollywood has demonstrably improved female representation in popular films, but until now inclusion riders have not been applied to the music industry. This paper explores the application of inclusion riders to the music industry in order to remedy a long-standing history of female exclusion, as well as increase visibility for the vast number of talented females in the music industry that deserve the same opportunities and recognition, but until now have remained invisible.

MUSICAL BORROWING IN HIP-HOP MUSIC: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS AND CASE STUDIES Justin A. Williams, BA, MMus Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2009 0 Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop Music: Theoretical Frameworks and Case Studies Justin A. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. These case studies include borrowing from the internal past of the genre (Ch. 1), the use of jazz and its reception as an ‗art music‘ within hip-hop (Ch. 2), borrowing and mixing intended for listening spaces such as the automobile (Ch. 3), sampling the voice of rap artists posthumously (Ch. 4), and sampling and borrowing as lineage within the gangsta rap subgenre (Ch.

  • Metal for the Masses”: Or, Will Metal Ever Be Mainstream Again? (And Why We Should Want It to Be...)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ResearchSPace - Bath Spa University MODERN HEAVY METAL: MARKETS, PRACTICES AND CULTURES International Academic Conference 2015 “METAL FOR THE MASSES”: OR, WILL METAL EVER BE MAINSTREAM AGAIN? (AND WHY WE SHOULD WANT IT TO BE...) Andy R. Brown Bath Spa University, UK Abstract Exploring the model of scene-based innovation and scarcity that characterised the 90s extreme metal underground, as eloquently outlined by Keith Kahn- Harris, this paper seeks to evaluate the extent to which its model of “eclipsed” symbolic capital accumulation is the key not to its success but relative failure to achieve innovation, development and change in metal music. Debating Lena and Peterson’s AgSIT model of genre trajectories, this paper argues such change in metal music have always been tied to the formation and demise of music “mainstreams.” The problem from this perspective is that NWOBHM, doom, power (including symphonic), thrash, grindcore, death and black metal did not mainstream enough (with the exception of some notable bands) to allow the next cycle of musical innovation to commence. Introduction In a striking series of recent posts, published on-line in the net.magazine Sou- ciant (2013; 2014), Keith Kahn-Harris has reflected on the question of Metal After Metal. Recalling the searching intelligence of a younger Lawrence Gross- berg (1990) and his anxious ruminations on whether rock was dead, dying or “going somewhere else” – published over twenty years ago – Kahn-Harris ec- hoes a similar set of fears, not about the break-up of the music-audience rela- tions that sustained the Anglo-American “rock formation” but the scenic- relations that sustained the creative-economy of the extreme metal under- ground.
