De caráter internacional tendo como base de identificação os fanzines e a música, o universo simbólico dos grupos punks assumiu posição de destaque não só dentro da história do rock, mas também no contexto da juventude na sociedade contemporânea. Abstract This work aims the analyses of suburban teenagers group gathering, that within various cities worldwide and influenced by the English punks, took over the underground youth culture features based on fanzines and music identification. Furthermore, the punk groups symbolic universe reached out a great international importance not only over the rock history, but also in the contemporary youth society environment. INTRODUÇÃO É interessante notar que de todas as coletividades juvenis que emergiram após os explosivos movimentos contraculturais dos anos 60 – e elas são muitas: punks, skinheads, metaleiros, darks, góticos, entre outras -, a que mais influência e curiosidade despertou sobre as camadas jovens da população, foi, sem dúvida, o movimento punk. Sua aparição colocou em evidência uma nova forma de atuação social, diametralmente oposta àquela vivida e praticada pela juventude dos anos 60. O mito “paz e amor” juntamente com a visão utópica de uma sociedade igualitária e sem fronteiras que, orientaram por muito tempo as ações dos jovens ocidentais, soavam no contexto dos anos 70 absolutamente anacrônicos para aqueles jovens que, distantes da prosperidade econômica e privados de liberdade individual, pregaram de um lado, ações coletivas em contraposição ao autoconhecimento da década anterior e, de outro, a violência e o confronto contra a filosofia pacifista da geração hippie. Uma grande mudança ocorria, então, no cenário social e trazia à tona o desejo e as aspirações de jovens da periferia, que tinham, num plano mais geral, a vida duramente sacrificada pela crise econômica generalizada e, num plano mais localizado, isto é, no Brasil, encontravam-se amordaçados pela ditadura que inibia a criatividade e o invencionismo característico dessa fase da vida. Sem dinheiro para o gasto diário e sem atividades de lazer que lhes ocupassem o tempo, os jovens da periferia de Londres promoveram um levante contra o establishment e suas regras e apresentaram-se ao mundo como uma verdadeira antítese do bom comportamento social. 10 A rebelião é vista inicialmente como uma conspiração sem propósitos, uma vez que não propunha nenhum modelo alternativo de sociedade. O movimento, porém, logo assumiria feições de manifestações organizadas, deixando claro à sociedade que aqueles jovens que profanavam o presente e diziam não acreditar no futuro também queriam ter reconhecimento e participação na vida social. O propósito deste estudo consiste exatamente em compreender como se deu à participação dos punks no cenário social durante a década de 80, que contribuições trouxeram e que influências deixaram nos movimentos juvenis. Uma vez que o movimento juvenil não nasceu com os punks nem, tão pouco, se findou em seus limites, julgamos necessário e também pertinente reconstituir – mesmo que de maneira sumária – a trajetória percorrida pela juventude ocidental até o momento da explosão punk em fins dos anos 70. Sob a luz dessa perspectiva de análise, compreendemos que o nascimento da condição juvenil – inexistente na Idade Média – encontraria nas transformações políticas, econômicas e sociais que sacudiram o século XVIII os primeiros incentivos para sua definitiva estruturação quando alguns países europeus – a França principalmente – põem em prática um novo método de ensino, isto é, a separação etária das salas de aula. Contudo, pode-se dizer que foi somente no século XX, com o término da Primeira Guerra Mundial, que a juventude começou a assumir características de categoria social autônoma. A grande reviravolta ainda estava, todavia, para acontecer e ela veio com a fase de prosperidade econômica vivida pelos E.U.A. a partir dos anos 50. Esse crescimento econômico culminaria com a massificação de novas técnicas de comunicações que, entre outras coisas, aceleraria e contribuiria para a formação da identidade juvenil nas sociedades industriais do ocidente. De tal sorte que, o final dos anos 50 e início dos anos 60 assistiria à 11 consolidação e conseqüente multiplicação de organizações juvenis por todo o mundo. Foi, portanto, somente após percorrer tortuosos caminhos da história que compreendemos a complexidade na qual estão inseridas as subculturas juvenis que se estruturaram na contemporaneidade. Otto Sompank I always loved the simplicity and visceral feel of all forms of punk. From the Pistols take on the New York Dolls rock, or the UK Subs aggressive punk take on rhythm and blues. The stark reality Crass and the anarchist-punk scene was informed with aspects of obscure seventies rock too, for example Pete Wright’s prog bass lines in places. Granted. Perhaps the most famous and intense link to rock and punk was Motorhead. While their early output and LP’s definitely had a clear nod to punk (Lemmy playing for the Damned), they appealed to most punks back then with their sheer aggression and intensity. It’s clear Motorhead and Black Sabbath influenced a lot of street-punk and the ferocious tones of Discharge and their Scandinavian counterparts such as Riistetyt, Kaaos and Anti Cimex. The early links were there but the influence of late 1970s early 80s NWOBM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and street punk, Discharge etc. in turn influenced Metallica, Anthrax and Exodus in the early eighties. Most of them can occasionally be seen sporting Discharge, Broken Bones and GBH shirts on their early record-sleeve pictures. Not only that, Newcastle band Venom were equally influential in the mix of new genre forms germinating in the early 1980s. One of the early examples of the incorporation of rock and metal into the UK punk scene came from Discharge.

Ghost Mice With only two members in this folk/punk band their voices and their music can be heard along with such pride. This band is one of the greatest to come out of the scene because of their abrasive acoustic style. The band consists of a male guitarist (I don't know his name) and Hannah who plays the violin. They are successful and very well should be because it's hard to 99 when you have such little to work with. This band is off Plan It X records and they put on a fantastic show. Not only is the band one of the leaders of the new genre called folk/punk but I'm sure there is going to be very big things to come from them and it will always be from the heart. Defiance, Ohio Defiance, Ohio are perhaps one of the most compassionate and energetic leaders of the "folk/punk" movement. Their clever lyrics accompanied by fast, melodic, acoustic guitars make them very enjoyable to listen to.

I say there’s no sin in trying to make a living from your music, your craft. But deep down, Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) , Sting (The Police), Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Peppers) , etc, etc. are all to some degree punks. I think they’d freely tell you that.

    Before and After Exile: The Music of Protest in Brazil Cynthia Machado Campos 1. Reactions to the Dictatorship The Brazilian military dictatorship, established as a result of a coup d’état in March 1964, prompted a strong social reaction especially amongst the younger generation of Brazilians. Many students of Brazilian universities took to the streets to demonstrate against the government. The year 1968 was a decisive year in which political movements and demonstrations against the military regime emerged all over Brazil, showing widespread dissatisfaction with the military government. Most leaders of the political movement were young Before and After Exile: The Music of Protest in Brazil 2 people, aged between 18 and 30, as were the majority of the participants. The rebellion of these young people was generally regarded as a fight against the political dictatorship. Some of them adopted violence and used guns. The military government responded to their violence with more violence, imprisonment, censorship and torture, evidence of which can be seen in many testimonies and books written by ex-militants and ex-prisoners from the dictatorship period1. The big youth demonstrations at the end of 1968 meant inevitable confrontation with the police and resulted in stricter laws by the military government, such as AI5 (Institutional Act number 5)2. They have been around for six years now and are like the RAMONES for the Newmarket scene. Newmarket is a city north of Tornto with some transportation challenges, which partially explains why a scene has grown here. The METALEDDIES are a big part of that scene. This interview was my third attempt at interviewing the band. This attempt took place on July 30th, 2006. Introduce yourself and tell us what you play in the band? Jonny Eyeball (JE): My name is Jonny Eyeball and I am the lead vocalist and I play the skin flute. I play bass. Big Daddy Baddituded (DB): My name is Big Daddy Baddituded and I beat the skins.
