The report provides enrolment statistics based on data reported annually by public schools, independent schools and home schools in the Province of Manitoba. Enrolment reporting is mandatory for public and funded independent schools and optional for non-funded independent schools. Nursery enrolment represents pupils attending school division or independent school nursery programs only. The report contains enrolment summaries at the provincial, divisional and school level by grade. Enrolment is reported on the basis of the total number of pupils attending school on September 30, 2005. Enrolment statistics contained herein are not representative of the number of pupils eligible for provincial funding. Pupil statistics pertaining to funding eligibility are available in FRAME reports (Financial Reporting and Accounting in Manitoba Education) which can be found at: www.edu.gov.mb.ca/ks4/finance/facts/. Further information regarding schools can also be found in the Schools in Manitoba - Écoles du Manitoba booklet available on the Internet at: www.edu.gov.mb.ca/ks4/schools. -1- SUMMARY Total Enrolment Total enrolment reported in the Province of Manitoba on September 30, 2005 was 199,710 representing a decrease of 2,454 pupils from total enrolment on September 30, 2004. Total enrolment in special education classes increased by 143 pupils. Total enrolment in nursery decreased by 209 pupils. Total enrolment in kindergarten classes decreased by 289 pupils. Total enrolment in elementary grades (1 to 8) decreased by 2,189 pupils. Total enrolment in secondary grades (S1 to S4) increased by 90 pupils. Public Schools Total enrolment increased in 8 school divisions/districts, while 29 school divisions/districts experienced a decrease. Garden Valley School Division with an increase of 174 pupils, Seven Oaks School Division with an increase of 127 pupils and division scolaire franco-manitobaine with an increase of 76 pupils experienced the largest gains in enrolment. In terms of percentage, the largest increases occurred in Garden Valley School Division with 5.5%, division scolaire franco-manitobaine with 1.7% and Mystery Lake School District with 1.6%. Pembina Trails School Division with a decrease of 659 pupils, River East Transcona School Division with a decrease of 314 pupils and Louis Riel School Division with a decrease of 256 pupils experienced the largest declines in enrolment. In terms of percentage, the largest decreases occurred in Whiteshell Special Revenue District with 13.4%, Flin Flon School Division with 6.0% and Pembina Trails School Division with 4.7%. The table on the following page illustrates changes in enrolment for each school division/district in the Province of Manitoba. Public school openings included Rolling Acres School in Beautiful Plains School Division and Can Am Colony School in Turtle Mountain School Division. Fairway Colony School re-opened as a public school in Beautiful Plains School Division. Public school closures included New Hope Elementary in Border Land School Division, Fleming School in Brandon School Division, École Saint-Léon in division scolaire franco-manitobaine, Parkdale School in Flin Flon School Division, Pine River Elementary in Mountain View School Division, High Bluff School in Portage la Prairie School Division and Mafeking School in Swan Valley School Division. Solid Rock School opened as a non-funded independent school. Fairway Colony School, formerly a non-funded independent school, re-opened as a public school. Non-funded independent schools that reported enrolment in 2005 but not in 2004 are Schoenweise Christian School and Willow Grove School. Non-funded independent schools that opened in 2004 and reported enrolment for the first time in 2005 are Northern Shield Academy, Odanah Colony School and Wingham HB School.
