Welcome to the Henderson Re-ablement Unit Information and advice for patients

The Henderson Re-ablement Unit offers short-term, individual and holistic re-ablement programmes to help people improve their independence with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, walking and eating.

How can a stay on the Henderson Re-ablement Unit help me? The staff on the unit will work with you and your family to help you set personal and realistic goals to achieve before you leave the unit. For example, one of your goals may be to increase your ability to stand from a chair without help, perhaps by learning a new technique for doing this or using equipment to help.

To help us decide on how best to help you achieve your goals we may need to assess your abilities in the kitchen and/or using the stairs and assess your home environment.

You will have daily support/therapy which will involves completing everyday tasks such as washing and dressing, walking on the unit to groups, to the bathroom and to meals. Group activities which may be suitable for you are also held daily.

How long will I need to stay on the unit? Within the first week of your stay on the unit we will discuss with you and your family/ friends (if you wish) how long you are likely to need to stay with us. This is usually 2 – 4 weeks (maximum of 6 weeks) and depends on how you meet your goals.

The Henderson Unit team Our team is made up of: • GPs (Mon, Weds & Fri mornings) • A consultant (Tues afternoon) • Nursing staff • Re-ablement support workers • Occupational therapists • Physiotherapists • Speech and language therapists • Pharmacists

We can also access a range of other community services.

During your stay with us While you are staying with us you will be encouraged to be as independent as possible and be involved in making decisions about your goals and progress. We hope that you will enjoy your time on the Henderson Re-ablement Unit and will actively engage in the re-ablement process.
