Friel uses the stage to speak to this question by representing the trauma of the doubly oppressed female and giving voice to this otherwise silenced figure. Despite scholarly attention to Friel, little work has been done to examine the treatment of women in his plays. Through the use of feminist, post-colonial, and trauma theory, I examine Friel’s use of a specific theatrical technique, the moment of rupture, where his female characters break out of their normal speech patterns to enter into an awareness of their trauma. This dissertation explores how Friel employs this device in The Freedom of ix the City, Translations, and Dancing at Lughnasa to steer his audience to and through the moral and political issue of women’s disempowerment. x INTRODUCTION “THIS ERASURE WAS ABSOLUTE”1: THE TRAUMAS OF IRELAND [Brian Friel] paints families, love affairs, jealousies, reconciliations. His skill is gently wielded and is closely allied to music. His texts are easily learned because the rhythms are so natural – onomatopoetic – and alliterative. He gives the actor clues. We adore him. Rosaleen Linehan A letter to the author, 13 April 2006 In 1971 Irish playwright Brian Friel broadcast a “self-portrait” for BBC Northern Ireland, in which he discussed his decision to become a writer: I began to survey and analyse the mixed holding I had inherited – the personal, traditional, and acquired knowledge that cocooned me: an Irish Catholic teacher with a nationalist background, living in a schizophrenic community. (Corbett 107) The schizophrenic, split community, of which Friel was a part, provides the background for many of his plays. His scripts give insight into the Irish landscape, less beautiful than the American tourist would be led to believe, by writing about the “gaps between word and deed, between thought and feeling, between action and memory, and between the heart and the head” (Corbett 108). It is in these gaps that Friel locates the voice of his Irish characters. Friel has his characters speak from the gaps in theatrical moments of rupture; through these moments he tells the forgotten narratives left behind by years of violence and trauma. In the late 1960s violence erupted in Northern Ireland as a clash of ideals and allegiance came to a head for the two opposing communities sharing the small country. The roots of the conflict stretch back many centuries through a history passed on from 1 Friel, Brian. The Faith Healer, pp. 344. 1 2 generation to generation; it is a painful legacy given to Ireland’s youth. Ireland has never been considered a nation at peace; its history is wrought with violence, oppression, and occupation, and its citizens have internalized this history as part of their national identity. Catholic in religion since the fifth century, the island endured various occupations leading up to the most recent in the early fifteenth century. These incursions began as early as the sixth century BC with the invasion of the Celts, and continued through the ninth and tenth centuries with Viking raids; the Normans settled soon after, and England and Wales established colonies during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The region had little rest between invasions, with little time for recovery or the formation of identity outside of the trauma of war and occupation. Today the island is split into two separate nation-states, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and for the past eighty years these countries have had separate histories. One is defined by aggression, the other by rebirth. Prior to 1922,2 however, the island was united, and the people of Ireland shared a common and traumatic history. This trauma is locatable in specific historical events— events that had a profound effect on the island and those who call it home. I examine the effect of the traumatic events through the idea of rupture. Throughout Ireland’s history traumatic events metaphorically ruptured the Irish cultural landscape. As each traumatic event occurred, a breach or a crevasse was created in the Irish identity, separating communities and dividing histories. Frost University of British Columbia Okanagan This paper examines the evolution of the personal pledging system used by newly admitted freemen, or citizens, of Norwich between 1365 and 1441. It argues that in the late fourteenth century new freemen chose their own sureties, and a large, diverse body of men acted as their pledges. The personal pledging system changed early in the fifteenth century, however, and from 1420 to 1441 civic office holders, particularly the sheriffs, served as the vast majority of pledges. This alteration to the pledging system coincided with changes to the structure and composition of Norwich’s government, and it paralleled a decrease in opportunities for the majority of Norwich’s freemen to participate in civic government.1 On September 14, 1365, thirteen men came before Norwich’s assembly and swore their oaths as new freemen of the city.2 They promised to pay entrance fees ranging from 13s.

NANO NAGLE Nano Nagle (christened Honora) was born in 1718 of a long- standing Catholic family at Ballygriffin near Mallow in North Cork. Her home lay in the beautiful valley of the Blackwater backed by the Nagle Mountains to the south. Her father was Garret Nagle, a wealthy landowner in the area; her mother, Ann Mathews, was from an equally prominent family in Co. Tipperary. Like others of the old Catholic gentry, the Nagles had managed to hold on to most of their land and wealth during the era of the Penal Laws in the eighteenth century. Edmund Burke, the famous parliamentaria n and orator, who was a relative of Nano Nagle on his mother's side, and had spent his early years in Ballygriffin, described those laws in one trenchant sentence: "Their declared object was to reduce the Catholics in Ireland to a miserable populace, without property, without estimation, without education" The Penal Laws made it unlawful to open a Catholic school at home, and at the same time, forbade them to travel overseas for their education. Nano had to go to a hedge school for her primary education. While the "hedge school" label suggests the classes always took place outdoors next to a hedgerow, classes were sometimes held in a house or barn. A hedgerow is a line of closely spaced shrubs and tree species, planted and trained to form a barrier or to separate a road from adjoining fields or one field from another.

Immediately MICHAEL begins speaking slowly bring up the lights on the rest of the stage. Around the stage and at a distance from MICHAEL the other characters stand motionless in formal tableau. MAGGIE is at the kitchen window (right). CHRIS is at the front door. KATE at extreme stage right. ROSE and GERRY sit on the garden seat. JACK stands beside ROSE. AGNES is upstage left. They hold these positions while MICHAEL talks to the audience. MICHAEL. When I cast my mind back to that summer of 1936 different kinds of memories offer themselves to me. We got our first wireless set that summer – well, a sort of set; and it obsessed us. And because it arrived as August was about too begin, my Aunt Maggie – She was the joker of the family – she suggested we give it a name. She wanted to call it Lugh* after the old Celtic God of the Harvest. Because in the old days August the First was La Lughnasa, the feast day of the pagan god, Lugh; and the days and weeks of harvesting that followed were called the Festival of Lughnasa. But Aunt Kate – she was a national schoolteacher and a very proper woman --she said it would be sinful to christen an inanimate object with any kind of name, not to talk of a pagan god. So we just called it Marconi because that was the name emblazoned on the set.

    Northern Irish Society in the Wake of Brexit By Agnès Maillot Since the 2016 referendum, Brexit has dominated the political conversation in Northern Ireland, launching a debate on the Irish reunification and exacerbating communitarian tensions within Northern Irish society. What are the social and economic roots of these conflicts, and what is at stake for Northern Ireland’s future? “No Irish sea border”, “EU out of Ulster”, “NI Protocol makes GFA null and void”. These are some of the graffiti that have appeared on the walls of some Northern Irish communities in recent weeks. They all express Loyalist1 frustration, and sometimes anger, towards the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement reached in 2019 between the UK and the EU, which includes a specific section on Northern Ireland.2 While the message behind these phrases might seem cryptic to the outsider, it is a language that most of the Irish, and more specifically Northern Irish, can speak fluently. For the last four years, Brexit has regularly been making the news headlines and has dominated political conversations. More importantly, it has introduced a new dimension in the way in which the future of the UK province is discussed, prompting a debate on the reunification of the island and exacerbating a crisis within Unionism.
