ABSTRACT Wounded Knee, 1973: Consnnimatory and Instrumental Functions of Militant Discourse By Lucie Melchert Dr. Richard Jensen, Examination Committee Chair Professor of Communication University of Nevada, Las Vegas Little academic research exists of the American hidian takeover of the hamlet of Wounded Knee, South Dakota in 1973. This thesis is an analysis of the discourse of the Wounded Knee incident, which served dual purposes for the activists. First, American Indian discourse served as a reinforcing agent to American Indians, both at Woimded Knee and across the country. Second, the rhetoric was meant to effect change within the general American public. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION On February 27,1973, members of the American Indian Movement (AIM), with the help of local Oglala Sioux Indians, seized control of the hamlet of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in a desperate attempt to draw attention to the dreadful living and social conditions on the Pine Ridge Sioux Reservation nearby. The three-month standoff that ensued was one o f the most prominent social events of the decade and was responsible for the death of thirteen American Indians (Kipp, 1994). Marking the first armed resistance by American Indians since the Wounded Knee massacre in 1890, the event today stands out as a forceful testament to the passion and sincerity of American Indian activism. According to AIM activist Woody Kipp (1994), “the takeover was a response to a century of maniacal oppression by white society, an oppression that goes on today— subtler, smilingly, but it continues” (p. 214). Formed in 1968 in Minneapolis by ex-convicts Clyde Bellecourt and Dennis Banks, the American hidian Movement labored to protect American Indian civil liberties and treaty rights, create social equality for all hidians living

Melda Red Bear (Lakota) was born on Pine Ridge (Oglala Lakota / Sioux) Reservation in South Dakota (1939-). Her husband, Lupe Trejo (1938-1999) is Mexican and has been a long-term resident of the reservation. I first met this couple in 1994 and developed an abiding friendship with them prior to our decision to collaborate in recording their storytelling sessions (1997-98). The recording and interpretation of the material evokes ethical questions about power and representation that have arisen with debates about 'as-told-to' autobiographies.

Reinhardt On 27 February 1973, a group of Lakota Sioux residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and members of the Amer- ican Indian Movement (AIM) took over the reservation town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota. Tribal officials, aided by various arms of the United States government, immediately laid siege to the occupiers. The resulting seventy-one-day stand-off wit- nessed countless fire fights, the deaths of two activists, the par- alyzing of one United States marshal, a frenzy of national media coverage, a multitude of arrests, and the virtual destruction of Wounded Knee.' One common misconception about the event, known as Wounded Knee 1973, is the idea that the Indian oc- cupation was a well-orchestrated, premeditated effort to court the national media, disrupt tribal proceedings, and play on the heartstrings of American citizens. For example, Francis Paul Prucha, in his highly respected and comprehensive two-volume analysis of federal Indian policy. The Great Father, describes it as an "engineered" action at a site "consciously chosen as a symbol" because of the 1890 massacre there of Big Foot's Min- neconjou Sioux band by the United States Army's Seventh Cav- 1.
