Most sites were surveyed in both winter and summer, although some contained water only one occasion. Altogether 57 waterbird species were recorded, with 29 292 waterbirds of 25 species on Lake MacLeod in October 1994. River pools were shown to be relatively important for waterbirds, while many freshwater claypans were little used. At least 492 species of aquatic invertebrate were collected. The invertebrate fauna was characterized by the low frequency with which taxa occurred: a third of the species were collected at a single site on only one occasion. -

BLACKFORD RESERVE KIN S 06 Place Name and Address: Blackford Reserve Rowney Road Blackford SA 5275 SUMMARY OF HERITAGE VALUE: Description: The Blackford Reserve consists of a large area of land bisected by Rowney Road. There are two stone cottages standing on the east side of the road, and one of stone and mixed materials on the west side. Most of the reserve is covered by native scrub, in a district where most land has been cleared for farming. Statement of Heritage Value: Commencing in about the 1880s, the Blackford Reserve was continuously occupied by an Indigenous community until the 1940s, and is still used today. It is the most substantial evidence of the historical and continuing relationship between European and Aboriginal people in the South-East. In addition, while there are a number of places entered in the SA Heritage Register because of their role in the interaction between European and Aboriginal South Australians, including all or part of the settlements at Poonindie, Moorundie, Point Pearce, Raukkan (Point McLeay) and Killalpaninna, all these settlements differ from Blackford Reserve in one fundamental respect. All were created, administered and supervised on a day-to-day basis by European staff. Most were run by church missionaries, Moorundie and Point Pearce by government officers, but all were European. Blackford is fundamentally different in being a settlement run entirely by and for its Aboriginal residents. Relevant Criteria (Under Section 16 of the Heritage Act 1993): (a) It demonstrates important aspects of the evolution or pattern of the State's history (d) It is an outstanding representative of a particular class of places of cultural significance RECOMMENDATION: It is recommended that the Blackford Reserve be provisionally entered in the South Australian Heritage Register, and that it be declared a place of archaeological significance. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. The environmental, social and human health importance of the aquifers and wetlands of the Lower South East of South Australia and SW Victoria and the increasing threats to their existence. My submission to the Senate Select Committee on Unconventional Gas Mining March 2016 I am Marcia Lorenz B.A. Grad. Dip. Ed. Admin., a retired school teacher. I only discovered the attractions of the South East when I came to Beachport 12 years ago. I am a volunteer at the Millicent High School where I support the Aboriginal children in their work with their culture and the environment. I am also a volunteer with other environmental groups in the region. My submission concerns the likely detrimental effect of unconventional gas extraction (“fracking”) on the aquifers and wetlands of the South East of South Australia and therefore on the myriad of species, both flora and fauna that constitute wetland habitats. 1 HISTORY Historically, post white settlement, wetlands were viewed as wastelands with no thought being given to the natural environment and the diversity of species they contained. Economics was the driving force. It would be wonderful if we could say that times have changed and politically there is the realisation that in order for humans to exist, the natural environment must be taken into consideration. After all we now have knowledge that wasn’t available to the ordinary person in the early days of settlement. Post European settlement change in land use has significantly altered the landscape of the South East resulting in the loss of many areas of wetland habitat with <6% of the original wetland extent now remaining.1 An estimated 2,515 km. -

Birds South East Number 84 November 2018 The real highlights for us were seeing Regent Parrots at Lake Hindmarsh, and Malleefowl at three Birdlife Nhill Cross different locations. There was a pair of Malleefowl tending a mound in the reveg patch at the Lodge Border Campout which was a rare opportunity for us to see the birds th working their mound. Unfortunately, it took several September 28 – trips to the mound, just missing the birds each st time, until the last morning of our stay when one of October 1 the birds had just finished opening up the mound and was still present when we arrived. There was a great turn up (over 60) at The Little Desert Nature Lodge for the bi-annual cross border Contents campout. The Nhill Birdlife group did a great job 1. Habitat Types
Habitat Types The following section features ten predominant habitat types on the West Coast of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. It provides a description of each habitat type and the native plant and fauna species that commonly occur there. The fauna species lists in this section are not limited to the species included in this publication and include other coastal fauna species. Fauna species included in this publication are printed in bold. Information is also provided on specific threats and reference sites for each habitat type. The habitat types presented are generally either characteristic of high-energy exposed coastline or low-energy sheltered coastline. Open sandy beaches, non-vegetated dunefields, coastal cliffs and cliff tops are all typically found along high energy, exposed coastline, while mangroves, sand flats and saltmarsh/samphire are characteristic of low energy, sheltered coastline. Cooper*, Melbourne Although overseas books on ornithology have described the Sanderling, Calidris alba, as being "common on almost every ocean beach in the world", this does not apply, from the published records, to Australia. On this continent they are classed as rare species and they appear to return each year to a favourite area, where they may be seen in small flocks varying from five to two hundred birds. The main areas are at Boat Harbour, south of Sydney; several places from Port Phillip to Portland, in western Victoria : Goolwa Beach (200 birds) and at Pondalowie Bay in South Australia; also recorded in Western Australia and in Queensland. In the Australian Bird W ate her, 3:243, some of the observations recorded by the team who is carrying out the Survey of the Birds of Wilson's Promontory, were published, revealing the occurrence of the Sanderling in that area; the first records for eastern Victoria. This distribution is somewhat similar to that of the nesting groups. An Arctic breeder, the Sanderling nests within the Arctic Circle, in the tundra climatic zone. Although this zone extends around the Arctic Ocean, in northern Canada, Greenland, Europe and Asia, and the bird nests "within a mile or two of the coast", it appears to breed in very selected areas, and there are large gaps between the groups. It breeds on some of the Arctic islands of Canada; also along the north-western and north-eastern coasts of Greenland; in Spitsbergen; and in Siberia on Taymyr Peninsula, New Siberian Islands and Liakof Island. -

Peeps and Related Sandpipers Peeps are a group of diminutive sandpipers that are notoriously hard to tell apart. They belong to a subfamily of subarctic and arctic nesting sandpipers known as the Calidridinae (in the sandpiper family, Scolopacidae). During their migrations, when most residents of North America have the opportunity to watch them, mixed flocks of calidridine sandpipers scurry about on mudflats, feeding at the edge of the retreating tide, or swarm aloft, twisting and turning like a dense school of fish. These traits, in a group of birds that look so much alike to start with, give bird watchers nightmares. Fortunately for Alaskans and visitors to our state, Alaska is an excellent location to view and identify calidridine sandpipers. The early summer breeding season is the easiest time of the year to distinguish the various species, not only because they are in breeding plumage and are more approachable than at other times of the year, but also because each species performs a characteristic courtship display with unique vocalizations. For the avid birder, Alaska has the additional attraction of being one of the best places in North America to view exotic Eurasian species. General description: Three peeps are abundant summer residents and breeders in Alaska—the least, semipalmated, and western sandpipers (Calidris minutilla, C. pusilla, and C. mauri) [all lists in order by size]. Another four species from Eurasia may also be seen—the little, rufous-necked, Temminck's, and long-toed stints (“stint” is the British equivalent for peep) (C. minuta, C. ruficollis, C. temminckii, C. subminuta). These seven species range from 5 to 6½ inches (15-17 cm) in length, and weigh from 2/3 to 1½ ounces (17-33 g).
