Worship Nuts and Bolts III.Pub
NUTS AND BOLTS III: ALL THINGS MUSICALLY RELATED 1. I NTRODUCTION Worship is a living tradition, a dynamic process that moves between received heritage and the realities and challenges of the present world. It is a conversation that began long before we were born and will continue long after we are gone. Music has always been an integral expression of the proclamation of the Word, of prayer and of the incarnational mystery in worship. The Psalmist proclaims, “I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall be continually in my mouth” (Ps. 34: 1 RSV). As musicians working in the church, our calling is to be creative facilitators and conduits that articulate and offer praise to God; to be, in the words of the poet George Herbert, “secretaries of God’s praise.” Augustine writes in his Confessions, “ ... even now as I am moved not by the song but by the things which are sung, when sung with fluent voice and music that is most appropriate, I acknowledge again the great benefit of this practice. Thus I vacillate between the peril of pleasure and the value of the experience, and I am led more, while advocating no irrevocable position, to endorse the custom of singing in church so that by the pleasure of hearing, the weaker soul might be elevated to an attitude of devotion.” Thirteen centuries later, John Wesley wrote these instructions for Methodists, “Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing God more than yourself, or any other creature. -

This is why I shouldn’t be writing anything about the two dogs that have been such presences for sixteen years of my life. -
Early Christian Fathers
Early Christian Fathers Author(s): Richardson, Cyril C. (1909-1976) Publisher: Grand Rapids, MI: Christian Classics Ethereal Library Description: Part of the Library of Christian Classics series, Early Christian Fathers is the best single-book introduction to the early church fathers, providing an enriching and informative intro- duction to first and second century Christian thought. Con- taining carefully selected letters and works from early church fathers--including among others St. Clement, St. Ignatius, St. Polycarp, St. Justin the Martyr, and St. Irenaeus--Early Christian Fathers gives a representative, though not exhaust- ive, overview of early Christian thought. A brief introduction and extensive notes also accompany each letter or work, making Early Christian Fathers a great study aid. Thus, with flowing and contemporary translations, Early Christian Fath- ers is ideal for beginners and scholars alike; it is essential reading for anyone interested in the early church fathers. An Eco-Archive of Haitian Literature, 1982–2017
MIGRATION and MIGRATION and REFUGE MIGRATION MIGRATION REFUGE and Haitian writers have made profound contributions to debates about the converging paths of political and natural histories, yet their refl ections on the legacies of colonialism, imperialism, and neoliberalism are often neglected in heated disputes about the future of human life on the planet. REFUGE The 2010 earthquake only exacerbated this contradiction. Despite the fact that Haitian authors have long treated the connections between political violence, precariousness, and ecological degradation, in media coverage around the world, the earthquake would have suddenly exposed An Eco-Archive of Haitian Literature, scandalous conditions on the ground in Haiti. This book argues that 1982–2017 contemporary Haitian literature historicizes the political and environmental problems brought to the surface by the earthquake by building on texts of earlier generations, especia lly at the end of the Duvalier era and its aftermath. Informed by Haitian studies and models of postcolonial ecocriticism, the book conceives of literature as an “eco-archive,” or a body JOHN PATRICK WALSH of texts that depicts ecological change over time and its impact on social and environmental justice. Focusing equally on established and less well- known authors, the book contends that the eco-archive challenges future- oriented, universalizing narratives of the Anthropocene and the global refugee crisis with portrayals of different forms and paths of migration and refuge within Haiti and around the Americas. JOHN PATRICK WALSH JOHN PATRICK “John Walsh provides a well-written and well-researched piece of work, one that scholars of Haiti will be excited to read. The book carries out a close ecocritical engagement with Haitian literature, using a broad corpus of primary works and drawing on the extensive body of recent work in Haitian studies. -

ABSTRACT This thesis investigates practices and beliefs of an African diaspora migrant church. The question this thesis seeks to answer is why are some of the second-generation members frustrated while others are leaving the church. The Church of Pentecost is a migrant church with its foundations in Ghana. In the UK, the Church of Pentecost appears to be flourishing, however, there seems to be a growing number of young people who claim to be frustrated whilst others are leaving the church. Subsequently, the focus of this thesis is to trace the contours of transition in the church and, ultimately, to find out why some of the second-generation members are disengaged and why others are leaving the church. -
