1 Descortesía en La Casa de Papel Un estudio sociopragmático del diálogo televisivo Linnéa Harila Blomqvist Romanska och klassiska institutionen Examensarbete 15 hp Spanska Spanska kandidatkurs (30 hp) Höstterminen 2020 Handledare: María Bernal English title: Impoliteness in Money Heist: A sociopragmatic study of television dialogue 2 Descortesía en La Casa de Papel Un estudio sociopragmático del diálogo televisivo Linnéa Harila Blomqvist Resumen Las series de la televisión son una fuente importante para el entendimiento de las estructuras lingüísticas y socioculturales de una lengua. Según muchos investigadores, el habla televisiva no puede ser tratada como lengua hablada real; según algunos, sí es posible. Otros argumentan que existen muchas diferencias entre el habla auténtica y el habla televisiva, pero que también tienen mucho en común. El objetivo de este trabajo es contribuir a un mayor entendimiento de cómo se puede investigar fenómenos sociopragmáticos mediante el diálogo televisivo, lo que esperamos lograr a través analizar la serie televisiva La Casa de Papel por muestras de descortesía usada. Para llevar a cabo esta investigación, veinticuatro escenas de la primera temporada de La Casa de Papel fueron recogidas y analizadas. La descortesía expresada fue clasificada según cinco categorías de descortesía y cinco categorías de respuesta ante la descortesía. Los resultados muestran que existen en el corpus ejemplos de cada categoría de descortesía propuesta, algo que indica que el habla de la televisión podría tener las mismas estructuras sociopragmáticas que el habla real. Aunque se necesita más estudios en el área para comprobarlo, argumentamos que el diálogo televisivo podría ser una fuente adecuada por investigaciones sociopragmáticas de la lengua hablada. -

The consumption of foreign Netflix originals by American audiences Student name: Zuzana Pekárková Student number: 499221 Supervisor: Dr. Deborah Castro Mariño Master Media Studies – Media & Creative Industries Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Master Thesis September 2019 THE CONSUMPTION OF FOREIGN NETFLIX ORIGINALS BY AMERICAN AUDIENCES Abstract The increasing dominance and popularity of streaming video-on-demand platforms, most notably Netflix, has transformed the television and film industry – from disrupting established business models, to affecting the process of production, as well as audience’s attitudes and viewing behaviors (Pardo, 2013). One of these recent developments that remains largely unmapped in academic literature is the unprecedented success of non-English Netflix originals on the American market. Shows such as the German Dark or Spanish Elite are breaking the traditional notion of a one-way flow between the continents and gaining avid viewers among the mainstream US audience, which has historically been thought of as rather resistant to international television imports (Hazelton, 2018; McDonald, 2009; Saleem, 2018). Hence, the present thesis explored this emerging phenomenon by investigating why do American viewers watch foreign Netflix originals and how does cultural proximity and individuals’ cultural capital relate to the consumption of foreign Netflix originals by American audiences. Additionally, the study also investigated the ways in which American viewers perceive the quality of foreign Netflix original and how these perceptions of quality contribute to the shows’ appeal. The exploration was guided by theories related to the transnational appeal of high-end television, the contemporary conceptualizations of quality TV and the theories surrounding the roles of cultural proximity and cultural capital in informing and motivating television viewership (Dunleavy, 2014; Jenner, 2018; La Pastina & Straubhaar, 2005). -

What drives our 3 attention and our interest? Independently, storytelling and data and analytics have limited reach in today’s world of intense competition for our attention. If executed well, storytelling can be incredibly effective and engaging—but if the message doesn’t reach the right audience at the right time through the right chan- nel, it can go unnoticed. Data analytics has the power to reach the target audience at the intended moment, but if the message is not engaging, people won’t notice or pay attention to it. When combined effectively, CHALLENGE THE MONEY HEIST both mediums are incredibly effective in reaching the masses and in- fluencing social change and consumer behavior. Lo que también muestra es el efecto que tienen las palabrotas en los espectadores españoles y a los neerlandeses. Las estrategias más utilizadas en la serie son la omisión y la aproximación (Grit, 2010). Además, los efectos de las palabrotas cambian a menudo en los subtítulos neerlandeses. El grado de ofensa en España de una palabrota en general es mayor que en Los Países Bajos (de Raad et al., 2005). Con las palabrotas la connotación es más importante que la denotación (Jay, 1999). Generalmente la denotación está traducida muy bien, pero la connotación a veces no está traducida correctamente, no se presta atención a esto. El estudio también analiza las diferencias entre las palabrotas empleadas por género y por personajes. Resulta que las mujeres de la serie maldicen más que los hombres, mientras que esto suele ser al revés (Jay, 1999).
