Diagnostic characters: Body deep, compressed. Large scale plates forming regular rows; and scales of cheek in an even, relatively complete covering. Scales enlarged above pectoral-fin base and just behind gill opening to form a flexible tympanum; scales of caudal peduncle with 2 longitudinal rows of large anteriorly projecting spines. No groove in front of eye. Mouth terminal; teeth pointed, the central pair in each jaw largest. First dorsal fin with III prominent spines, the first capable of being locked in an erected position by the second, the third short but distinct; dorsal-fin rays 24 to 27 (usually 25 or 26); anal-fin rays 20 to 24; caudal fin slightly rounded; pectoral-fin rays 13 to 15 (usually 14). Caudal peduncle compressed. Colour: dark green to dark brown with oblique curved orange lines on posterior head and body; an oblique band of narrow blue and orange stripes from around mouth to below pectoral fins; a large round black blotch around peduncular spines; rays of soft dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins orange; caudal fin orange. Size: Maximum total length 30 cm. Habitat, biology, and fisheries: Occurs in coral reefs at depths to 30 m. Feeds on various organisms, including live coral, algae, sea urchins, crabs and other crustaceans, molluscs, tunicates, and fishes. Marketed fresh and dried-salted. Distribution: Widespread in the tropical Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa, including the Red Sea, through Indonesia to the Tuamotu Islands; north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia. -

Bull Mar Sci. 96(3):539–560. 2020 abstracts https://doi.org/10.5343/bms.2019.0047 Third International Symposium on Mangroves as Fish Habitat Abstracts* COMMUNITY COMPOSITION AND DIVERSITY OF PHYTOPLANKTON IN RELATION TO ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES AND SEASONALITY IN A TROPICAL MANGROVE ESTUARY, MALAYSIA by ABU HENA MK, Saifullah ASM, Idris MH, Rajaee AH, Rahman MM.—Phytoplankton are the base of the aquatic food chain from which energy is transferred to higher organisms. The community and abundance of phytoplankton in a tropical mangrove estuary were examined in Sarawak, Malaysia. Monthly-collected data from January 2013 to December 2013 was pooled into seasons to examine the influence of seasonality. The estuary was relatively species-rich and a total of 102 species under 43 genera were recorded, comprising 6 species of Cyanophyceae, 4 species of Chlorophyceae, 63 species of Bacillariophyceae, and 29 species of Dinophyceae. The mean abundance (cells L−1) of phytoplankton was found in the following order: Bacillariophyceae > Dinophyceae > Cyanophyceae > Chlorophyceae. Mean abundance of phytoplankton ranged from 5694 to 88,890 cells L−1 over the study period, with a higher value in the dry season. Species recorded from the estuary were dominated by Pleurosigma normanii, Coscinodiscus sp., Coscinodiscus centralis, Coscinodiscus granii, Dinophysis caudata, Ceratium carriense, Ceratium fusus, and Ceratium lineatum. Abundance of phytoplankton was positively influenced by chlorophyll a (R = 0.69), ammonium (R = 0.64), and silica (R = 0.64). Significant differences (ANOSIM and NMDS) were observed in the species community structure between the intermediate and wet season. The species assemblages were positively correlated with surface water temperature, salinity, pH, ammonium, and nitrate in the intermediate and dry season toward larger species composition in the respective seasons, whereas silica influenced species assemblage in the wet season. -

A compilation of 107 references dealing with fish parasites in New Caledonia permitted the production of a parasite-host list and a host-parasite list. The lists include Turbellaria, Monopisthocotylea, Polyopisthocotylea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda, Copepoda, Isopoda, Acanthocephala and Hirudinea, with 580 host-parasite combinations, corresponding with more than 370 species of parasites. Protozoa are not included. Platyhelminthes are the major group, with 239 species, including 98 monopisthocotylean monogeneans and 105 digeneans. Copepods include 61 records, and nematodes include 41 records. The list of fish recorded with parasites includes 195 species, in which most (ca. 170 species) are coral reef associated, the rest being a few deep-sea, pelagic or freshwater fishes. The serranids, lethrinids and lutjanids are the most commonly represented fish families. Although a list of published records does not provide a reliable estimate of biodiversity because of the important bias in publications being mainly in the domain of interest of the authors, it provides a basis to compare parasite biodiversity with other localities, and especially with other coral reefs. The present list is probably the most complete published account of parasite biodiversity of coral reef fishes. -

Al-Zubaidy Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries, Faculty of Marine Science and Environment, Hodeidah University, Yemen Abstract. Specimens of the marine fish, Abalistes stellaris (Balistidae) were collected from local fish market in Hodeidah during the period between September 2008 and July 2010 . Six out of 80 (7.5%) of these fish were found to harbour intestinal trematodes, Hypocreadium cavum Bray and Cribb, 1996 (Lepocreadiidae). Since there is no previous report on these digenetic trematode from any fish host in Yemen, the present recording may well be considered the first in this country. Introduction Members of the Lepocreadiidae Odhner, 1905 have a cosmopolitan distribution as intestinal parasites of marine teleosts (Bartoli and Bray, 2004). They are recognizable as worms with widely distributed Vitelline folices, a spinous tegument, a cirrus-sac, usually with a distinct external seminal vesicle and a typically I-shaped excretory vesicle (Bray, 2005). Ozaki (1936) erected the genus Hypocreadium to include H.symmetrorchis in Monocanthus cirrhifer from Japan. Manter (1940), Arai (1962) and Nahhas and Cable (1964) concluded that Hypocreadium Ozaki,1936 should be considered as a synonym to Pseudocreadium Layman,1930. However, Yamaguti (1971) refused these conclusions and preferred to retain the genus Hypocreadium Ozaki, 1936 as a separate 3 4 Ali B. Al-Zubaidy genus which could be easily separated from other related genera according to the position of genital pore, ovary and prostate cells as well as the extension of the excretory vesicle. -

Anguillicoloides crassus is of particular importance, as it has recently spread from its endemic range in the Eastern Pacific to Europe and North America, where it poses a significant threat to new, naïve hosts such as the economic important eel species Anguilla anguilla and Anguilla rostrata. The Anguillicolidae are therefore all potentially invasive taxa, but the relationships of the described species remain unclear. Anguillicolidae is part of Spirurina, a diverse clade made up of only animal parasites, but placement of the family within Spirurina is based on limited data. -

The SSC's Action Plans, Occasional Papers, newsletter Species and other publications are supported by a wide variety of generous donors including: The Sultanate of Oman established the Peter Scott IUCN/SSC Action Plan Fund in 1990. The Fund supports Action Plan development and implementation. To date, more than 80 grants have been made from the Fund to SSC Specialist Groups.
