WHERE DO SAWFISH LIVE? Educator Information For Student Activity 4 Lesson Summary: This lesson examines the diversity of locations and habitats where sawfish are found throughout the world. Vocabulary: Distribution, habitats Background Information: There are six recognized species of sawfish throughout the world. In this activity the distribution range of each species will be discussed and mapped. Information on each species can be found in the “Sawfish In Peril” teaching binder within each of the species profiles. Materials: Copies of activity map sheets and species profile laminated cards w/maps Pencils: colored pencils recommended Procedure: This activity begins by getting students to look at the different maps of sawfish species distribution. Have each student color in a map template of the distribution of a favorite sawfish species or have students form groups to color the maps for each species. Discussion Questions: Where do sawfish live? What habitats do sawfish reside in? Where would you go if you wanted to see a sawfish? Extension Activities: For more advanced students, the following questions can be discussed: What determines where sawfish species live? Do sawfish prefer certain water temperatures and habitat types? Sharks are exploited primarily for their fins, meat, cartilage, liver oil and skin (Clarke, 2004), whereas rays are targeted for their meat, skin, gill rakers and livers. Most shark catch takes place in response to demand for the animals’ fins, which command high prices (Jabado et al., 2015). Shark fin soup is a delicacy in many Asian countries—predominantly China—and in many other countries (Clarke et al., 2007). Apart from the fins being served in high-end restaurants, there is a demand for other products in different markets and by different consumer groups, and certain body parts are also used medicinally (Clarke et al., 2007). -

Webb Draft of 06/16/09 Webb - Cruising Guide to the Phillippines Page 2 INTRODUCTION The Philippines is the second largest archipelago in the world after Indonesia, with around 7,000 islands. Relatively few yachts cruise here, but there seem to be more every year. In most areas it is still rare to run across another yacht. There are pristine coral reefs, turquoise bays and snug anchorages, as well as more metropolitan delights. The Filipino people are very friendly and sometimes embarrassingly hospitable. Their culture is a unique mixture of indigenous, Spanish, Asian and American. Philippine charts are inexpensive and reasonably good. English is widely (although not universally) spoken. The cost of living is very reasonable. This book is intended to meet the particular needs of the cruising yachtsman with a boat in the 10-20 meter range. It supplements (but is not intended to replace) conventional navigational materials, a discussion of which can be found below on page 16. I have tried to make this book accurate, but responsibility for the safety of your vessel and its crew must remain yours alone. CONVENTIONS IN THIS BOOK Coordinates are given for various features to help you find them on a chart, not for uncritical use with GPS. In most cases the position is approximate, and is only given to the nearest whole minute. Where coordinates are expressed more exactly, in decimal minutes or minutes and seconds, the relevant chart is mentioned or WGS 84 is the datum used. See the References section (page 157) for specific details of the chart edition used. -

Herzog and Kirsten Jensen Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and the Biodiversity Institute, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, USA Abstract: A new lecanicephalidean genus is erected for cestodes previously recognised as “New Genus 12” (Polypocephalidae) in a phylogenetic analysis of the interrelationship of members of this order. Examination of the cestode fauna of the mangrove whipray, Urogymnus granulatus (Macleay) (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae) from the Solomon Islands and northern Australia revealed the existence of specimens representing two new species, consistent in morphology with “New Genus 12.” Corollapex gen. n. is unique among the 24 valid lecanicephalidean genera in its possession of an apical organ in the form of an external retractable central disk surrounded by eight concave muscular, membrane-bound pads and an internal heterogeneous glandular component. The two new spe- cies described herein, Corollapex cairae sp. n. (type species) and Corollapex tingoi sp. n., differ from one another in overall size and number of mature and immature proglottids, and are noted to demonstrate a differential distribution between mature and juvenile host individuals. Additional species diversity in the new genus, beyond C. cairae sp. n., C. tingoi sp. n., and “New Genus 12 n. sp. 1” of Jensen et al. (2016) is suggested. Corollapex gen. n. appears to be restricted to dasyatid hosts in the Indo-West Pacific region. -

Bull Mar Sci. 96(3):539–560. 2020 abstracts https://doi.org/10.5343/bms.2019.0047 Third International Symposium on Mangroves as Fish Habitat Abstracts* COMMUNITY COMPOSITION AND DIVERSITY OF PHYTOPLANKTON IN RELATION TO ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES AND SEASONALITY IN A TROPICAL MANGROVE ESTUARY, MALAYSIA by ABU HENA MK, Saifullah ASM, Idris MH, Rajaee AH, Rahman MM.—Phytoplankton are the base of the aquatic food chain from which energy is transferred to higher organisms. The community and abundance of phytoplankton in a tropical mangrove estuary were examined in Sarawak, Malaysia. Monthly-collected data from January 2013 to December 2013 was pooled into seasons to examine the influence of seasonality. The estuary was relatively species-rich and a total of 102 species under 43 genera were recorded, comprising 6 species of Cyanophyceae, 4 species of Chlorophyceae, 63 species of Bacillariophyceae, and 29 species of Dinophyceae. The mean abundance (cells L−1) of phytoplankton was found in the following order: Bacillariophyceae > Dinophyceae > Cyanophyceae > Chlorophyceae. Mean abundance of phytoplankton ranged from 5694 to 88,890 cells L−1 over the study period, with a higher value in the dry season. Species recorded from the estuary were dominated by Pleurosigma normanii, Coscinodiscus sp., Coscinodiscus centralis, Coscinodiscus granii, Dinophysis caudata, Ceratium carriense, Ceratium fusus, and Ceratium lineatum. Abundance of phytoplankton was positively influenced by chlorophyll a (R = 0.69), ammonium (R = 0.64), and silica (R = 0.64). Significant differences (ANOSIM and NMDS) were observed in the species community structure between the intermediate and wet season. The species assemblages were positively correlated with surface water temperature, salinity, pH, ammonium, and nitrate in the intermediate and dry season toward larger species composition in the respective seasons, whereas silica influenced species assemblage in the wet season. -

This led to the development of Malaysia’s own National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Shark or NPOA-Shark (Plan 1) in 2006. The successful development of Malaysia’s second National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Shark (Plan 2) is a manifestation of her renewed commitment to the continuous improvement of shark conservation and management measures in Malaysia.
