This paper describes the botanical features of Ficus carica L. (Moraceae), its wide variety of chemical constituents, its use in traditional medicine as remedies for many health problems, and its biological activities. The plant has been used traditionally to treat various ailments such as gastric problems, inflammation, and cancer. Phytochemical studies on the leaves and fruits of the plant have shown that they are rich in phenolics, organic acids, and volatile compounds. However, there is little information on the phytochemicals present in the stem and root. Reports on the biological activities of the plant are mainly on its crude extracts which have been proven to possess many biological activities. Some of the most interesting therapeutic effects include anticancer, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and antimicrobial activities. Thus, studies related to identification of the bioactive compounds and correlating them to their biological activities are very useful for further research to explore the potential of F. -

To substantiate this folkloric claim, the crude methanol extract and fractions from the leaves of D. mannii were investigated for their antifungal activity. The crude methanol extract was prepared from powdered dried leaves of the D. mannii. A portion was subjected to flash liquid chromatography on silica gel to afford test fractions. All test samples were screened for major groups of phytochemicals.Test samples and nystatin (reference) were evaluated for antifungal activity on ten yeasts using agar disc diffusion and broth microdilution methods. Its staminate flowers have valvate tepals, inflexed stamens springing back elastically at anthesis, and sometimes well-developed pistil- lodes. Current anatomical research on the wood of Moraceae (by Dr. A. M. W. Mennega) and recent field studies (by the present author) revealed that Olmedia is also distinct in anatomical characters of the wood and because of the lack of self-pruning branches. These differences between Olmedia and the other representatives of the tribe demand for reconsideration of the position of the genus and the deliminationof the tribe. In the spring of 1919 an Economic Survey Mission of the United States State Department, headed by the late Maj. Percy H. Ashmead, made a brief examination of the natural products and resources of the region lying between the Chamelec6n Valley in Honduras and the Motagua VaUey in Guatemala. Work was also done by the botanists of the expedition in the vicinity of Izabal on Lak.. Izaba!. Descriptions of the new species collected by the expedition, with a short account of its itinerary, have already been published by the writer,' and a number of the new forms have been illustrated. I think that we have picked up several new peo- ple with the success of Totally Turning and the NWA Showcase this past month. Unfortunately our demonstrator fell through at the last minute so we held an impromptu brainstorm on T.T. Most felt that it was a great success with only minor problems. A list of concerns, observations and all was given tonight at a summary meeting in Stillwater. If anyone has comments they will be wel- comed by the T.T. board. Every year we seem to have too much to do and not enough people but as the days grow closer we seem to be able to pull it together and have an incredible two days of demonstrations, vendors and superior woodworking on display. It is because of the fine leadership and the work of the members that we are able to show the public our obsession with woodworking. The month of May’s demonstration will be by Jon Tobiessen on decorative edges. We are looking forward to his slide pres- entation and sharing of his knowledge. New Pests of Landscape Ficus in California
FARM ADVISORS New Pests of Landscape Ficus in California Donald R. Hodel, Environmental Horticulturist, University of California Cooperative Extension Ficus, especially F. microcarpa (Chinese banyan, sometime incorrectly called F. nitida or F. retusa) and to a lesser extent F. benjamina (weeping fig), are important components of California’s urban landscape. Indeed, F. microcarpa is one of the more common street and park trees in southern California and many urban streets are lined with fine, old, handsome specimens. An especially tough tree able to withstand adverse conditions and neglect and still provide expected benefits and amenities, F. microcarpa is a dependable landscape subject from the Coachella Valley in the low desert to coastal regions, from San Diego to as far north as the Bay Area, where it is much prized and planted for its glossy dark green foliage, vigorous growth, and adaptability to a wide range of conditions. Nonetheless, Ficus microcarpa is a host of numerous pests, including the well known Indian laurel thrips and the leaf gall wasp, and several scale and Fig. 1. Growing Your Ficus Bonsai
Growing your Ficus Bonsai Ficus bonsai are ideally suited for indoor bonsai. There are many different varieties that are natural dwarfs. These varieties have very small leaves and slow growth habits. There are many varieties of ficus including narrow-leaf ficus, dwarf ficus, and weeping ficus. Ficus bonsai should be kept indoors all year round. With a few simple guidelines your Ficus bonsai can be grown without difficulty. Watering Ficus bonsai, as with most bonsai, like to dry out between waterings. Feel the soil every day. If there is a rock in the planting lift it up and feel under it, otherwise, just stick your finger about a half of an inch to an inch into the soil. If the soil feels dry, water your bonsai. Never let your bonsai go totally dry for extended periods!!! The best way to water your bonsai is to soak it in a sink or container of water up to the trunk for about 5-10 minutes. Then allow it to drain. If top watering your bonsai, water, wait a few minutes, and water again. Repeat this several times to insure that your bonsai has received a thorough watering. Eventually you will be able to determine a watering schedule that meets your climate conditions. Light Ficus bonsai grow well in either direct or indirect sunlight. We prefer to grow Ficus in shady areas, out of the hot afternoon sun. Sometimes the direct afternoon sun can burn delicate leaves, especially when shining through a household window. Direct morning sunlight is great for almost all bonsai because of its low intensity. -

Hellmuth Introduction Entire monographs have been written on the bark paper of the Maya and Aztec codices (Van Hagen 1944). And there are plenty of scholarly botanical studies of Ficus trees of the family Moraceae. But on the Internet there is usually total confusion in popular web sites about the differences between strangler figs and normal fig trees. It is unclear to which degree the bark paper comes from a strangler fig tree, or also from anotherFicus species which is a normal tree (not dedicated to wrapping its roots around a host tree). But all this needs further research since 90% of the books and about 99% of the articles are on bark paper of Mexico. Indeed bark paper is still made in several parts of Mexico (to sell the tourists interested in Aztec, Maya and other cultures). Since we are in the middle of projects studying flavorings for cacao, Aztec and Maya ingredients for tobacco (more than just tobacco), colorants from local plants to dye native cotton clothing, and also trying to locate all the hundreds of medicinal plants of Guatemala, it would require funding to track down and study every species of Ficus. But since we are interested in all utilitarian plants of Mesoamerica, we wanted at least to prepare an introductory tabulation and a brief bibliography to assist people to understand that • strangler figs strangle other trees; these are very common in Guatemala • But there are many fig trees which are not stranglers • Figs for candy and cookies come from fig trees of other parts of the world • Not all bark paper comes just from amate (Ficus) trees For photographs we show in this first edition only the two fig trees which we have found in the last two months of field trips.
