A longtime journalist, Woodruff has covered politics and other news for CNN, NBC and PBS. She graduated from Duke University, and served as a member of the university’s Board of Trustees from 1985-1997. She was a visiting professor at Duke University’s Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, teaching a course on media and politics, and she was a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy. Based in Charlotte, N.C., and established in 1924 by N.C. industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke, The Duke Endowment is the largest private foundation in the Southeast. “When Mr. Duke created the Endowment, he wanted its Trustees to be ‘persons of character and ability,’ and Judy Woodruff surely fits that description,” said Minor Shaw, the Endowment’s board chair. “She holds strong ties to the Carolinas, and her background will bring a unique perspective to our board.” Woodruff, a native of Tulsa, studied at Meredith College in Raleigh, and then at Duke University in Durham.
