Judy Woodruff Elected Trustee of The Duke Endowment

CHARLOTTE, NC – , co-anchor and senior correspondent for The PBS NewsHour, has been elected a Trustee of The Duke Endowment.

A longtime journalist, Woodruff has covered politics and other news for CNN, NBC and PBS. She graduated from , and served as a member of the university’s Board of Trustees from 1985-1997. She was a visiting professor at Duke University’s Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, teaching a course on media and politics, and she was a visiting fellow at ’s Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.

Based in Charlotte, N.C., and established in 1924 by N.C. industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke, The Duke Endowment is the largest private foundation in the Southeast.

“When Mr. Duke created the Endowment, he wanted its Trustees to be ‘persons of character and ability,’ and Judy Woodruff surely fits that description,” said Minor Shaw, the Endowment’s board chair. “She holds strong ties to the Carolinas, and her background will bring a unique perspective to our board.”

Woodruff, a native of Tulsa, studied at in Raleigh, and then at Duke University in Durham. She began her journalism career at a CBS affiliate in before joining NBC News, where she served as correspondent from 1977 to 1982. She then served as chief Washington correspondent for the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour before joining CNN to anchor the weekday program “.” While at PBS, she anchored the weekly series “Frontline with Judy Woodruff.” Woodruff returned to the NewsHour in 2007 as a senior correspondent and frequent co-anchor. In addition, she hosts “Conversations with Judy Woodruff” on .

Woodruff is a founding co-chair of the International Women’s Media Foundation and she serves as a Trustee of the , the , and the Urban Institute. Her honors include the Cine Lifetime Achievement Award, a Duke Distinguished Alumni Award, the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award in Broadcast Journalism/Television, and the University of Southern California Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.

The Duke Endowment strengthens communities in and South Carolina by nurturing children, promoting health, educating minds and enriching spirits. Since its founding, it has awarded $3 billion in grants. The Endowment shares a name with Duke University and Duke Energy, but all are separate organizations.
