PLAYERS Multi-percussionist Haruka Fujii has won international acclaim for her interpretation of contemporary music, having commissioned and performed numerous premiere works from luminary living composers. She has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras including the San Fransisco Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Nationale de Lyon, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Haruka is an artist of the Grammy Award-winning Silk Road Ensemble founded by Yo-Yo Ma, also a member of the historical new music group San Francisco Contemporary Players, and a founder and member of Utari Percussion Duo with her sisiter Rika Fujii. The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism. -

Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with James Avery PERSON Avery, James, 1948- Alternative Names: James Avery; Life Dates: November 27, 1948-December 31, 2013 Place of Birth: Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA Residence: Los Angeles, CA Occupations: Television Actor Biographical Note Born on November 27, 1948, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, James Avery left his hometown after high school to serve in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Avery then settled in San Diego, where he wrote poetry and television scripts, winning an Emmy Award for his production of Ameda Speaks: Poet James Avery. Avery also received a scholarship from the University of California at San Diego, where he obtained his B.A. degree in drama and literature in 1978. Avery was awarded an honorary doctorate from 1978. Avery was awarded an honorary doctorate from Virginia State University in 1996. Throughout his career, spanning over thirty years, as a writer working with a collective group in San Diego, Avery also worked as an actor in television, film, and theater productions. Avery's first acting part came in the role of God in the play JB in 1971 at San Diego Community College. After performing in his first acting role, Avery went on to star in the UPN comedy series Sparks from 1996 to 1998; and had recurring roles on The Legend of Tarzan, Showtime's Soul Food, and The Division on the Lifetime Network. Avery was best known for his role as the uncle of Will Smith's character on the popular sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. -

Television is a universally popular medium that offers a myriad of choices to viewers around the world. American programs both reflect and influence the culture of the times. Two dramatic series, The Closer and Saving Grace, were presented on the same cable network and shared genre and design. Both featured female police detectives and demonstrated an acute awareness of postmodern feminism. The Closer was very successful, yet Saving Grace, was cancelled midway through the third season. A close study of plot lines and character development in the shows will elucidate their fundamental differences that serve to explain their widely disparate reception by the viewing public. This project also received the J. Anthony Lukas Prize for a Work in Progress, administered by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Born in Clearwater, Florida, Laura Claridge received her Ph.D. in British Romanticism and Literary Theory from the University of Mary- land in 1986. She taught in the English departments at Converse and Wofford colleges in Spartanburg, SC, and was a tenured professor of English at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis until 1997. She has been a frequent writer and reviewer for the national press, appearing in such newspapers and magazines as The Wall Street Journal, Vogue, The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, and the Christian Science Monitor. Her books have been translated into Spanish, German, and Polish. She has appeared frequently in the national media, including NBC, CNN, BBC, CSPAN, and NPR and such widely watched programs as the Today Show. Laura Claridge’s biography of iconic publisher Blanche Knopf, The Lady with the Borzoi, will be published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in April, 2016. -

A NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM: STUDYING THE LIFE OF LINCOLNAbraham Lincoln at 200: A Bicentennial Survey. No president has such a hold on our minds as Abraham Lincoln. He lived at the dawn of photography, and his pine cone face made a haunting picture. He was the best writer in all American politics, and his words are even more powerful than his images. His greatest trial, the Civil War, was the nation’s greatest trial, and the race problem that caused it is still with us today. His death by murder gave his life a poignant and violent climax, and allows us to play the always-fascinating game of “what if?" Abraham Lincoln did great things, greater than anything done by Theodore Roosevelt or Franklin Roosevelt. He freed the slaves and saved the Union, and because he saved the Union he was able to free the slaves. Beyond this, however, our extraordinary interest in him, and esteem for him, has to do with what he said and how he said it. -

Not only is the 26th the late trumpeter’s birthday but many of his most enduring works were New York@Night recorded during this month, including the Charlie Parker All-Stars (1948); the 4 Miles Davis-Tadd Dameron Quintet’s run in Paris (1949), most of the Workin’, Steamin’ and Relaxin’ triumvirate by the quintet with John Coltrane (1956), Miles Interview: Vince Giordano Ahead and At Carnegie Hall, both with the Gil Evans Orchestra (1957 and 1961 6 by Michael Hittman respectively); and the bulk of Miles in the Sky (1968). Now in May 2008, another chapter to the Miles Legacy will be written with an ambitious concert at Town Artist Feature: George Garzone Hall May 9th, “Miles From India”. A companion concert to a just-released album 7 by Matthew Miller of the same name, the concert brings together musicians who played with the legend throughout his career as well as a number of classical Indian musicians for Label Spotlight: Les Disques Victo what is billed as a “cross-cultural summit meeting”. Our Encore this month, 8 by Kurt Gottschalk guitarist Pete Cosey, is participating in what is sure to be a monumental event. But, as is typical for New York, the happenings don’t stop happening there. Club Profile: Dizzy’s Club Pianist Ahmad Jamal (Cover) brings his trio to Blue Note in a pre-release by Laurel Gross celebration of his first new album in three years, It’s Magic (Birdology-Dreyfus), due out in June. -
