Ecological Response of Some Iris L. Taxa (Iridaceae) in Turkey

TAXA (IRIDACEAE) IN TURKEY 1 2 NEZAHAT KANDEMIR*, ALI ÇELIK AND ABDULKADIR SÜRÜCÜ Department of Biology, Education Faculty, Amasya University, Amasya-Turkey Key words: Iris taxa, Endemic, Rare, Ecological properties, Relationship Abstract Ecological relationships of some Iris taxa belonging to subgenera Hermodactyloides (I. danfordiae, I. histrio subsp. aintabensis, I. histrio subsp. histrio, I. reticulata, I. bakeriana, I. pamphylica) and Scorpiris (I. aucheri and I. persica) have been compared and relationships between taxa have been determined. These taxa are geophytes and flower in Spring. I. danfordiae, I. pamphylica and subsp. aintabensis are endemic to Turkey. I. reticulata and I. persica have widespread distribution while I. aucheri, subsp. aintabensis, subsp. histrio, I. pamphylica and I. bakeriana have restricted distribution in Turkey. Soil samples of the taxa were collected during flowering periods and physical and chemical properties (texture class, total salinity %, pH, CaCO3 %, organic matter %, N %, P kg/da, K kg/da, Ca , Mg, Mn, Cu, Fe and Zn ppm) were determined. The correlations between the soil analyses and taxa were evaluated using regression analysis. The P and CaCO3 values were found to be more effective than the other soil factors in the distributions of investigated taxa. Introduction Iris L. is one of the largest genus of Iridaceae family and comprises over 300 species in the world. They have been distributed in the Northern Hemisphere (Yu et al. 2009). I. spuria L. subsp. musulmanica (Fomin) Takht., is one of the the 10 species of Limniris section and grows wildly in Eastern Anatolia. Plant material was collected from Van-Erciş road. Besides the morphological and anatomical investigation; oil content and methyl esters of fatty acids of the seed oils were examined in this study for the first time. Fatty Acid methyl esters were prepared according to the method of Metcalfe et al. (13) from the oil obtained by the Soxhelet apparatus with n-hexane. Analysis of the methyl esters have been carried out with GC-MS. Myristic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Stearic Acid, Oleic and Arachidic Acid were determined as the main fatty acids in the oil. Seeds were rich in Linoleic (40 %) and Oleic Acid (30 %). Key words: Iris spuria subsp. musulmanica, seed, morphology, anatomy, seed oil, fatty acid. Iris spuria L. subsp. musulmanica (Fomin) Takht. This year we are offering an unprecedented range of calochortus in a multiplicity of sizes, colours and flower shapes from the charming fairy lanterns of C. albidus through to the spectacular, later-flowering mariposas with upward-facing bowl-shaped flowers in a rich tapestry of shades from canary-yellow through to lilac, lavender and purple. Counterpoised to these flashy dandies we are offering an assortment of choice muscari whose quiet charm, softer colours and Tulipa vvedenskyi Tecophilaea cyanocrocus Violacea persistent flowering make them no less effective in the winter and spring garden. Standouts among this group are the deliciously scented duo, M. muscarimi and M. macrocarpum and the striking and little known tassel-hyacith, M. weissii. While it has its devotees, many gardeners are unaware of the qualities of the large and diverse tribe of “onions”, known as alliums. -

WILLIAM HERBERT (1778–1847) SCIENTIST AND POLYMATH, AND HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO CURTIS’S BOTANICAL MAGAZINE Alison Rix ‘Hon. and Rev. W. Herbert, afterwards Dean of Manchester, in the fourth volume of the ‘Horticultural Transactions’, 1822, and in his work on the ‘Amaryllidaceae’ (1837, pp. 19, 339), declares that ‘horticultural experiments have established, beyond the possibility of refutation, that botanical species are only a higher and more permanent class of varieties’. He extends the same view to animals. The Dean believes that single species of each genus were created in an originally highly plastic condition, and that these have produced, chiefly by intercrossing, but likewise by variation, all our existing species’. [Preface to the third edition (1860) of On the Origin of Species,by Charles Darwin] The Hon. and Rev. William Herbert, often known as Dean Herbert, to whom Vol. 65 (1839) of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine was dedicated, was an exceptional polymath – a poet and classical scholar, linguist, reforming MP, clergyman – as well as amateur botanist and botanical artist. His best-known botanical work, illustrated with 48 of his own paintings, was the two volume work Amaryllidaceae, quoted above by Darwin. Although this extraordinary man counted botany as just one of his many interests, his output was prodigious; in addition to studying and breeding plants, such as Crocus, Gladiolus, Hippeastrum, Narcissus and Rhododendron, he also wrote and drew prolifically for journals such as Curtis’s Botanical Magazine and its rival publication, Edwards’s Botanical Register. In addition to Darwin, he corresponded with many other notable people, including Sir William Hooker and William Fox Talbot, and his letters paint a picture of a rather serious and industrious character. -

COLONIAL GARD~J~ PLANTS I Flowers Before 1700 The following plants are listed according to the names most commonly used during the colonial period. The botanical name follows for accurate identification. The common name was listed first because many of the people using these lists will have access to or be familiar with that name rather than the botanical name. The botanical names are according to Bailey’s Hortus Second and The Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture (3, 4). They are not the botanical names used during the colonial period for many of them have changed drastically. We have been very cautious concerning the interpretation of names to see that accuracy is maintained. By using several references spanning almost two hundred years (1, 3, 32, 35) we were able to interpret accurately the names of certain plants. For example, in the earliest works (32, 35), Lark’s Heel is used for Larkspur, also Delphinium. Then in later works the name Larkspur appears with the former in parenthesis. Similarly, the name "Emanies" appears frequently in the earliest books. Finally, one of them (35) lists the name Anemones as a synonym. Some of the names are amusing: "Issop" for Hyssop, "Pum- pions" for Pumpkins, "Mushmillions" for Muskmellons, "Isquou- terquashes" for Squashes, "Cowslips" for Primroses, "Daffadown dillies" for Daffodils. Other names are confusing. Bachelors Button was the name used for Gomphrena globosa, not for Centaurea cyanis as we use it today. Similarly, in the earliest literature, "Marygold" was used for Calendula. Later we begin to see "Pot Marygold" and "Calen- dula" for Calendula, and "Marygold" is reserved for Marigolds. -
Plant Regeneration from Cell Suspension Cultures of Iris (Iris Sermanica L
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Yuexin Wang for the degree of Master of Science in Horticulture presented on May 20, 1998. Title: Plant Regeneration from Cell Suspension Cultures of Iris (Iris sermanica L. cv. 'Skating Party") Abstract approved: _ „ Tdfiy H. H. Chen This thesis reports a successful in vitro plant regeneration system for Iris germanica L.from cell suspension cultures. A series of experiments was conducted to systematically examine factors which critically affect induction of differentiated clumps from the suspension culture, as well as the induction of shoot and root regeneration from the clumps. A stable suspension culture was established from callus induced on leaf bases and was maintained by subculturing every 3 weeks. Suspension cultures were maintained in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium (pH 5.9) supplemented with 290 mg-l"1 proline, 50 g-l"1 sucrose, 5.0 \iM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 0.5 \xM. kinetin (Kin). Suspension-cultured cells were transferred to a shoot induction medium, MS basal medium supplemented with 10 mg-l"1 pantothenic acid, 4.5 mg-l"1 nicotinic acid, 1.9 mg-l"1 thiamin, 250 mg-l"1 casein hydrolysate, 250 mg-l"1 proline, 50 g-l'1 sucrose, 2.0 g-l"1 Phytagel™ (Sigma, St. Louis, MO), 0.5 \M. NAA (a-Naphthaleneacetic acid), and 12.5 pM Kin. Cell clusters differentiated and eventually developed into shoots in 5 weeks. At the suspension culture phase, the effects of plant growth regulators (2,4-D acid and Kin), length of culture period, and the size of multicellular aggregates on plant regeneration were examined. -
