Roland Barthes1 iii ABSTRACT Popular narratives often extend textual content across multiple media platforms, creating transmedia stories. Recent scholarship has stressed the permeability of "the text," suggesting that the framework of a text, made up of paratexts including trailers and DVD extras, must be included in textual analysis. Here, I propose that this notion may be productively coupled with a theory of seriality––we may frame this phenomenon in the filmic terms of a narrative being comprised of transmedia sequels and/or prequels, or in the televisual language of episodes in a series.     Fast Capitalism ISSN 1930-014X Volume 2 • Issue 2 • 2007 doi:10.32855/fcapital.200701.007 Compliance Fiction: Adorno and Horkheimer’s ‘Culture Industry’ Thesis in a Multimedia Age Sam Caslin In today’s multimedia, virtual world, the notion of the culture industry is perhaps more pertinent than ever before. Mass entertainment now spans an increasingly diffuse yet seemingly interspersed array of media forms, including television, film, the Internet and the rise of the DVD box set (with the latter’s special features and writer/ producer/actor commentary all adding to the allure of the product). A key aspect of the power that each of these media possess is derived from their ability to immerse the viewer, reader or listener within not only a franchise, but a fantasy world that is, at least on the surface, very different to their own. Thus, we find a very powerful infrastructure that engenders, supports and maintains new types of fan culture, among the sci-fi community for example. Indeed, alongside the increasing organization of certain fan bases has come a plethora of new roles for fans and new ways of displaying loyalty to their chosen franchise. If fandom as a vocation is not new, the digital age has ensured that the charity and passion of fans has certainly reached higher levels of professionalism and technical proficiency than before. I want to use these developments in interactivity, television franchising and fan-organization in order to explore the limits of and possibilities for Adorno and Horkheimer’s ([1944] 1997) seminal work on the culture industry.

    CHAPTER 6 STILL FLYING: WRITING AS PARTICIPATORY ACTIVISM CIRCULATING ACROSS THE FIREFLY ‘VERSE Liza Potts Michigan State University INTRODUCTION The production and circulation of fan culture is entering a moment when fans, entertainers, and copyright holders are renegotiating the terms of participation. No longer bound by traditional means of making and delivering content, con- tent producers and content consumers are blurring the lines between their roles by co-producing material to share, spread, and celebrate the object of their en- joyment. Much of this activity takes places across digital spaces such as Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Etsy, meet-ups, and conventions (or cons). Sometimes, such blurring has resulted in the production of music videos (amandapalmer, 2009) and funding movies (Thomas, 2013). At other times, the results have met with resistance in the form of cease-and-desist letters and the threats of lawsuits (Gib- son, 2007). In many of these cases, it is the self-organizing activity of the fans— sometimes in cooperation with artists and producers—that create networks for knowledge sharing and collaboration. Negotiating participation, fans work within and across various digital spac- es to contribute to their fandoms. Many scholars have examined this kind of labor, including Henry Jenkins’ (1992) groundbreaking work on fan fiction, Matt Hills’ (2002) examination of fandom’s anti-commercial ideology, Jona- than Gray’s (2010) work on paratexts, and Abigail De Kosnik’s (2013) work on the free labor of fandom. The activities fans partake in and the objects they invoke across physical and digital spaces alter the context in which they can participate.

Rock some banners, widgets, diggs… let people know who wouldn’t ordinarily know. It wouldn’t hurt if this really was an event. Good for the business, good for the community – communitIES: Hollywood, internet, artists around the world, comic-book fans, musical fans (and even the rather vocal community of people who hate both but will still dig on this). Proving we can turn Dr. Horrible into a viable economic proposition as well as an awesome goof will only inspire more people to lay themselves out in the same way. It’s time for the dissemination of the artistic process. Create more for less. You are the ones that can make that happen. Whedon, demonstrating knowledge of his fan base as well as an idealistic belief in the power of ordinary people, set out to create a different model for how such productions are produced and distributed. Television networks, especially, have long exhibited a fear of the internet, worrying that if they make their shows available on the Internet, they would follow in the footsteps of the music industry, which might result in the steady loss of revenues.
