The bustling, historic market town of Wallingford lies within 2 miles and provides an extensive range of amenities, including restaurants, shops, and recreational facilities. For the commuter, or Didcot Parkway stations are within reach and provide train services to London Paddington via Reading, which itself is 15 miles south. The M25 and Heathrow airport are accessible via the M40 to the north (junction 6) or the M4 to the south (junction 12). There are also good bus links to Oxford and Reading that run from the end of Court Drive. The property is well positioned for access to a number of good schools in the area, together with a wide choice of schools in Oxford. For those wishing to enjoy the immediate surroundings, there are some lovely riverside and woodland walks, linking up with the and, of course, the joys of living directly on this wonderful stretch of the River Thames. Description Shillingford Court is an imposing country house built in 1898 on the site of an old wharf on the banks of the River Thames. The house was commissioned by Frederick William Mortimer, tailor to the Prince of Wales, later to become Edward VII. Mortimer was a close friend of the Prince and it is understood he stayed at the house with various paramours including Lillie Langtry. When the house was constructed Mortimer had both his initials (FWM) and his wife’s (JDM) inscribed in the front door hinge, drain hoppers and the grand staircase.

Tailors forms the major portion of this imposing building with elegant and interesting rooms featuring ornate panelling and high ceilings typical of the era. The house is approached through a large entrance hall with a solid oak front door, Italian mosaic flooring and an adjacent cloakroom. The reception hall has a magnificent sweeping staircase to the upper floors with panelled walls and high ceilings. The imposing drawing room is a stunning triple reception room with a large fireplace, wood burning stove, dining area and sitting areas. There are deep bay windows with stone mullions to the front and rear and a dais with a window seat overlooking the garden and river, bookshelves, panelled walls and a high ceiling with exposed timbers and beams. The galley kitchen is accessed via the drawing room and the hall and is fitted with a range of cupboards and built in hob with extractor over, oven, microwave and dishwasher.

The Edwardian staircase leads up to a galleried landing with the sitting area and beautiful views over the river Thames. Our clients have added a first floor kitchen/breakfast room with a range of painted wall and floor units, electric 3-oven Aga, built-in microwave, dishwasher and fridge. This lovely room is dual aspect and the breakfast/dining area has wonderful views over the river. The master bedroom is dual aspect and has an en suite shower room and large dressing room with fitted wardrobes (this has separate access to the landing and could be used as a bedroom). There is a charming first floor bathroom with Italian mosaic floor and a separate WC and a laundry cupboard housing a washing machine and dryer. To the second floor there are three further bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom with Jacuzzi bath, further bathroom and study/bedroom with views over the Thames.

Outside The property is approached from Court Drive via large wrought iron gates opening to a shared gravel driveway which leads to a designated parking for two cars and a third to the front of the single garage and front garden. There is also a useful cellar workshop. The garden to the rear has wonderful views of the River Thames and surrounding countryside.
