WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 4 – APPALACHIAN TRAIL IN MARYLAND – 12M MHA Eighth in a series of 9 hikes on the Appalachian Trail across Maryland. An out and back hike of a total of 11.6 miles going south from Gathland State Park to Weverton Cliffs overlook. Total elevation gain is 2,000’ with the longest climb of 450’ over .8 mile. Pace averages 2.5 miles per hour. LEAVE: 8:45 A.M. from Howard County Fairgrounds, take I-70 Exit 80 south on MD-32, 0.25 mile to west on MD-144, 0.5 mile to fairgrounds. WEDNESDAY – NOVEMBER 4 – PARTIAL – 7M MHA This 7-mile out-and-back Tweeners hike will go from Winans Meadow in Leakin Park to Leon Day Park with a side excursion on the Old Fort Trail, at a moderate pace. START: 10:00 AM. Take I-695 (Balto. Beltway) Exit 16, I-70 East/Local Traffic/Park & Ride. Exit at I-70 Exit 94 Security Blvd. Stay in right lane and turn right at Ingleside Ave and turn left. Cross bridge and turn right at top of bridge (just before Franklintown sign). Proceed one block to stop sign at Franklintown Rd. and turn left. SATURDAY – NOVEMBER 7 – LOCHRAVEN RESERVOIR – 6-7/E-M MHA This is an out-and back hike, mostly flat with some hills. Average pace 2.5 mph. Nice views of the reservoir. The hike is largely on the Merryman Trail, but we will take some occasional side paths, one of which passes an interesting, secluded graveyard. This hike is ideal for beginners and for those who like the idea of being done by around one P.M. Bring a snack and water. Meet at 9:30 A.M.at the trailhead across the street from 10514 Pot Spring Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030.You will notice that the road ends there at a gated community. Hike through the Glen Artney and Hilton areas, and beyond … to end in Oella. The hike will be lead at a moderate pace with several steep hills. Many sections of trail are rocky, total ascent is 1,500+ feet (including a climb of 500 feet in less than a half mile towards the end of the hike). Lunch at Chimney Rock’s spectacular overlook. SATURDAY – NOVEMBER 14 – FREDERICK WATERSHED (ONE) – 12H/S MHA This twelve mile lollipop-shaped hike is the first in a series of new hikes I’m developing in the Frederick Municipal Forest. The hike has a couple of major stream crossings, miles and miles of rocky terrain, 1,500+ feet of climbing, and lunch at a scenic overlook. An unusual feature on this hike is a very rugged, creative and elaborate bike trail. We’ll hike the entire length of the bike trail as it careens its way down a hillside to a major stream crossing. Our pace will be moderate (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5- 3 mph). LEAVE: 8:00 AM from the Rte 32 Park and Ride just north of I-70 (exit 80). Hike from the Holtwood Recreation Area to House Rock on this beautiful and challenging section of the Conestoga Trail. Highlights are Pinnacle Overlook, Kelly’s Run, Tucquan Glen Nature Preserve and many rocky outcroppings with excellent views of the Susquehanna River. Sections of the trail are very rocky, and can be quite slippery through Kelly’s Run. Several short but very steep climbs and descents. LEAVE: 7:00 AM, Timonium Park & Ride, north lot. CARPOOL COST: $10.00 SUNDAY – NOVEMBER 15 – PATAPSCO VALLEY STATE PARK: HILTON AND ORANGE GROVE AREAS – 6M MHA This 6 mile circuit hike crosses both swinging bridges in the park, provides striking views of Bloedes’ Dam from both sides of the river, and employs both blazed and unmarked trails. The hike has a couple of stream crossings, some rugged sections of trail, and about 900 feet of climbing (including two climbs of 200+ feet). Our pace will be moderate (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph). Bring water and a snack. MEET: 9:45 A.M. at Clarksville Park-N-Ride 500 Signal Bell Lane 21029 (near the intersection of MD-32 and MD-108). Take MD-32 either south from I-70 (Exit 80) or west from I-95 (Exit 38B) or west from MD-29 (Exit 16B). Once on MD-32, take Exit 20 for MD-108 east. Area – 9M MHA This is an area that I don’t believe the MCM has ever hiked. We will hike mostly level trails passing by several ponds with some possible bush whacking. Pace will be 2.5–3 mph. MEET: 10:00 A.M. at Saddlebrook East Community Park. From Baltimore Washington Parkway (295) near Laurel: Rt 197 east, turn left onto Bowie Race Track Road. The park is 1.6 miles on the left. SATURDAY – FEBRUARY 13 – PVSP: DANIELS DAM AREA – 11H MHA This 11 miler contains a short section of very rocky terrain, has a total ascent of 1,000+ feet (including a number of short but steep inclines), employs a few tilted and irregular trails, may include some bushwhacking, has no stream crossings to speak of, and will have lunch by the water. MHA We will hike on a variety of trails in Susquehanna State Park in the Havre de Grace area. Points of interest include the Historic Rock Run Grist Mill and great views of the Susquehanna River. SUNDAY – FEBRUARY 14 – PVSP: RT. 32 AREA – 8M MHA This 8 1/2 mile hike along unmarked and unmaintained trails on the Howard County side of the park has numerous stream crossings, very little by way of rocky sections, a total ascent of about 1,200 feet, and lunch by the water. Some bushwhacking is possible, some sections of trail will be muddy if conditions are wet, and pace will be moderate (that is, our average speed while moving will be 2.5 - 3 mph).
