LAY LEANINGS By Deacon Mike Stewart © 2020 Mike Stewart Email: [email protected] Used with permission “Grampy, sometimes I get afraid.” “Me too, buddy. So what makes you afraid?” “I get scared of things I can’t see, Grampy.” “That’s interesting, buddy. But what makes you so afraid of things you can’t see? I mean, if you can’t see something, doesn’t that mean it isn’t real?” “No Grampy, sometimes your eyes can’t see what’s in the dark, so that’s why I get afraid.” “So what can make that better for you, buddy? What can help you not be afraid when you’re in the dark?” “That’s simple, Grampy … a light will help me not be afraid of the dark.” Last Fall, one of our neighbors decorated their house quite elaborately for Halloween. There were witches with green illuminated faces, eerie goblins, and a giant spider crawling up a web on the front of the house. And it left me wondering why some people would celebrate the darkness. I’m not being critical … it’s just a question. I mean, isn’t the world a scary enough place much of the time as it is? I came across a saying this week that really spoke to me. ‘It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.’ The authorship of that saying is not immediately clear, but the meaning speaks volumes, as I see some people hoarding in fear right now, while others are reaching out to serve those in greater need. Giving vs. gathering. Let’s face it, the world right now … at least as it’s presented to us in the media, and especially on social media, can be a very scary place. If you feel like you want to hide under the covers, you’ll have lots of company. Sometimes it seems as though we’ve been conditioned to celebrate only the darkness in this world. To be sure, this virus scare has us all facing a reality we never thought possible in this country. However, for billions in the world, our temporary inconveniences would be a luxury to them. And yet, not to minimize our own reality, the problems we confront right now, either those in our own bubble or those in the larger world, are too big for us to fix, at least by ourselves. So there we sit in the dark, afraid of all the things we can’t even see. In fact, I’m convinced that most of the things I fear most in life are things I can’t see. And yet I ‘honor’ them with my fear. Fear doesn’t deserve our honor, which is probably why Jesus so often reminded us not to be afraid. If we added up all the time we’ve wasted being fearful of things that never materialized in life rather than giving that fear over to God, we could probably add ten years on to each of our lives. Think what you and I could do with those ten years, or even ten days. Is it worth it? Pray about that. ‘It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.’ At once [Jesus] spoke to [his disciples], “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Matthew 14:27

From a very early age Óscar knew he wanted to be a . He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of San Salvador in 1942 and quickly became a popular, wellknown parish priest, editor of his diocesan newspaper, and eventually, of Santiago de Maria. One day in 1975, soldiers raided a village in his diocese and killed many innocent people. Bishop Romero was horrified. At the funerals of these villagers, he spoke about people's human rights and how the military was wrong in the things they did. On March 24, 1980, he was gunned down by an unknown assassin while celebrating Mass in a small hospital chapel. The day before, he had asked Salvadoran soldiers to obey God and not the government. On October 14, 2018, he was canonized a saint of the Church.

Mary doesn’t rale off a quick response but rather pauses and ponders, wonder- ing what this might mean. Her response is a choice not simply to give birth to a child, but to fully embrace her identy and her calling as an inmate companion with God. “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.” It is as if Mary is saying, “Look! My life is fully in God! Everything about who I am is for and with God!” During this day of Annunciaon, reflect on your daily “yeses.” How do these reflect your own identy and life in God? TODAY'S READINGS: Isaiah 7:10R14; 8:10; Hebrews 10:4R10; Luke 1:26R38 (545). “Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.’
