Extreme Future Extreme Future is a story-oriented role-playing Philosophy game, and is a full-fledged standalone system. I first started playing RPGs with Dungeons and It contains all the information needed to play in the Dragons, but I was always just as interested in core rules book, but as the system uses adjectivesSample sciencefile fiction role-playing games like; Mechwarrior to describe characters and equipment, all Extreme (Battletech the RPG), Warhamer 40K, Traveller, Future supplements are easy to integrate into Space Master and even Living Steel. ongoing games, played with other games systems. I started Game Mastering SF RPGs with Space This Supplement Master, but I was an art student, not an engineering student, and I found that the Space Master rules This supplement is the technical specifications of a very complex. Extreme Future uses adjectives, which are ranked Science fiction loses a lot of its unique flavour as follows: Abysmal, Terrible, Poor, Mediocre, without starships, especially space opera settings, Average, Fair, Good, Great, Superb, Epic, and and I vowed that my game – I was already planning Legendary, to describe elements of the background. to write a sci-fi RPG – would have spaceships a plenty, and the rules to make more, all in the core So, for example, a bodyguard might be Good with a rule book. blaster, but have Mediocre social skills. He’ll probably win a fight with an artist who’s a Superb When spaceship rules were available, the amount painter but a Poor shot. Almost anything can be of time needed to calculate ‘the numbers’ was a 5 little discouraging to me, because I was always more interested in drawing and writing than generating balanced stats. For example, if I drew a frigate with fifteen guns, I discovered that it was very difficult to design a spaceship with the right number of guns. The game designers had envisioned frigates with four or five guns, and it was difficult to use the rules to make anything else.

I decided to employ a more versatile and forgiving rule system in my game, and that's why it is based on a version of the FATE system.

Versatile and cinematic games, like FUDGE and FATE, are becoming more and more mainstream these days, but they also allow rules to be added if players should desire a more tactical game. You don't need to get FATE to play Extreme Future, but it is free and has some interesting options that I left out for various reasons, so feel free to grab a copy if so inclined.

The spaceship system, which uses adjectives to build designs, is very versatile, but also surprisingly complex and tactical. This supplement shows off just what the system is capable of producing.

Extreme Future uses six-sided dice(d6), and these have a lot of advantages for gaming. They're easy to read, easy to count, stackable and, most importantly, when there's a need, they can be rummaged from a couple of old board games. Most people are already pretty comfortable with theSample idea file of rolling a few dice and adding them together. 6
