Yet, they get little thanks for their hard work! At first glance,Only a toilet is a simple device. It’s designed to get rid of human waste. That’s it; that’s all. However, toilets are critical devices for proper sanitation. Many people view their time on the “porcelain throne” as a regular part of

I have a newfound appreciation for the artfulness and skill it takes to be a librarian or an archivist. All of those mentioned below went above and beyond the normal call of duty, and I appreciate it so much. Jon Schladweiler, Historian of the Arizona Water Association, helped me a great deal through his archive on the history of sewers, in person, and by email. His online sewer history archive is a treasure. Anna Berkes and Bob Self at Monticello, the staff at the National Archives in College Park and D.C., and Amber Kappell at the American Medical Association were all amazing help to me at various stages of this project.

  • Ladies & Gentlemen: a Brief History of the Toilet
N° 38 - MARCH 2012 THE HYGIENE WHISPERER Ladies & Gentlemen: a brief history of the toilet Have you ever noticed that when we speak of food or about eating, everyone participates and tells about his or her own experiences? But few people are willing to speak about the most human and natural of consequences. So let’s summon up all our courage and talk about it right here! Nico Zardo Let’s pretend that a couple of hundred years ago, you, an inhabitant of a large city like Paris or London, happened to come home late at night. Suddenly, you may have heard someone shouting that sounded more or less like “looooo!” and be immediately drenched by a certain amount of dung and urine of authentic, biologically human origin. Nothing personal, no intentional attack; just a common, popular practice to simply dispose of one’s organic wastes. The cry is the contraction of the French expression “gardez l’eau!” (watch out for the water!) used to warn passers-by. Distancing waste from oneself, but bringing it near to others -- especially when these “others” are several hundreds of thousands of people (from 1800 to 1900, London’s population increased from 958,000 to 6,500,000, and in the same period, Paris witnessed an increment from 546,000 to 2,700,000 people) constituted a serious problem! FEW WILL ADMIT IT, but the great urban renewal of European cities of the mid-1800s is not wholly fruit of the enlightened intentions of the sovereigns of the time, but rather of the impelling need not to be overwhelmed by deadly epidemics (cholera, typhoid, …) and by ugly odors and miasmas caused by the lack of sewer systems, toilet facilities and sanitary control of public water.

  • Historic Toilet Tour
HISTORIC TOILET TOUR A saga of convenience through the ages, from Roman Hygiene to the 18th C ‘Sugar House’ and 19th C attempts to prevent ’nuisance’ and promote public decency. And the chance to sample the dubious comforts of medieval garderobes! Cross road to LENDAL BRIDGE Look downstream towards Ouse Bridge. In 1367 the first recorded public convenience was provided in an arch of the old Ouse Bridge. In 1380 William Graa of St Mary Castlegate left 3s 4d per annum in his will to provide “a light in the common jakes at the end of Use Bridge”. This led to the saying “bridges are built for wise men to go over and fools to go under”. In 1579 the City Council was concerned at the filthy state of the water in the River Ouse, the source of much of the city’s water, and they issued orders for the citizens to stop discharging filth into the river. But at the same time the city councilors were in the habit of nipping out of the Guildhall and peeing in the river in full public view! To conceal this spectacle the Councilors voted 5 shillings “to erect a wainscot around the pissing place”! This was just past where the White Rose boatyard now is, and the councilors’ toilets are still in the same place, though thankfully inside the Guildhall! LENDAL TOWER Recross the road and look at the plaque on Lendal Tower. It tells about the heightening of the tower in the tower in the late 17th C to house a water tank.

  • How Bathrooms Really Became Separated by Sex W Burlette Carter*
YALE LAW & POLICY REVIEW Sexism in the "Bathroom Debates": How Bathrooms Really Became Separated by Sex W Burlette Carter* This Article challenges two widely-embraced theories about how publicintimate spaces (e.g, toilets, locker rooms, showers, etc. hereinafter called "bathrooms')first became separatedby sex. The first challenged theory claims that the very first instance of sex-separation in public bathrooms occurredin 1739 at a ball held at a restaurantin Paris. Under this first view, sex-separation first emerged as a sign of upper-class gentility and elitism. The second challenged theory argues that a consistent practice of differentiating bathrooms by sex did not emerge until the late nineteenth century. According to this view, bathroom sex- separation was imposed when authoritiesoverreacted to the notion of the intermingling of the sexes as women entered the workplace during the Industrial Revolution. Thus, the second view holds that bathroom sex- separation is rooted in sexism, paternalism, and outdated Victorian notions ofmodesty This Article argues thatboth of these theories are wrong. With respect to the first theory, the author'sresearch indicates that the ball in question was not at a restaurant It was an invitation-only royal masquerade ball for some 14,000 people. It was hosted by King Louis XV at the Hotel de Ville in Paristo celebratehis daughter's wedding. Moreover, it was not the first instance of sex-separation in bathrooms. That ball may, however, evidence an attempt to extend heterosexually-centeredbathroom norms into spaces like the masquerades. The authorargues that the masquerades *@W.
