It links the city of Howrah, at Bally, to its twin city of Kolkata, at Dakshineswar. Built in December 1932, it is a multispan steel bridge and was built to provide road cum rail link between the Calcutta Port and its hinterland. It is 2,887 feet (880 m) long.[1] The construction of bridge was done by famous Kutchi-Mistri contractor and Industrialist Rai Bahadur Jagmal Raja Chauhan. His nameplate can still be seen on each girder of the bridge. The construction of bridge started in year 1926 and was completed in year 1932. The fabrication of the bridge was done at works of Braithwate & Company, Calcutta.[2][3] The Bally Bridge was named Willingdon Bridge after Viceroy of India, Freeman Freeman-Thomas, 1st Marquess of Willingdon, who inaugurated it. The first train that ran across the bridge was named Jagmal Raja Howrah Express by British acknowledging the feat of Rai Bahadur Jagmal Raja. It is said that bridge cost over one crore in those years. The bridge serves both road and rail: • Rail - connects Sealdah Station to Delhi • Road - connects Grand Trunk Road (Howrah side) to Barrackpore Trunk Road (Kolkata side) The famous Dakshineswar Temple is situated on the banks of the Hooghly river near the Bally Bridge.

NON-COOPERATION 1920-1922: REGIONAL ASPECTS OF THE ALL INDIA MOBILIZATION Ph.D Thesis Submitted by: SAKINA ABBAS ZAIDI Under the Supervision of Dr. ROOHI ABIDA AHAMAD, Associate Professor Centre of Advance Study Department of History Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh(India) 2016 Acknowledgements I am immensely thankful to ‘Almighty Allah,’ and Ahlulbait (A.S), for the completion of my work in spirit and letter. It is a pleasant duty for me to acknowledge the kindness of all my teachers, friends, well-wishers and family with whose help and advice I was able to complete this work, as it is undeniable true that thesis writing involves other aiding you directly or indirectly. First and foremost, beholden to my supervisor, Dr. Roohi Abida Ahmed, for her encouragement, moral support, inspiring suggestions and excellent guidance. The help she extended to me was more than what I deserve. She always provided me with constructive and critical suggestions. I felt extraordinary fortunate with the attentiveness I was shown by her. I indeed consider myself immensely blessed in having someone so kind and supportive as my supervisor from whom I learnt a lot. A statement of thanks here falls very short for the gratitude I have for her mentorship. I gratefully acknowledge my debt to Professor Tariq Ahmed who helped a lot in picking up slips and lapses in the text and who has been a constant source of inspiration for me during the course of my study. I am thankful to Professor Ali Athar, Chairman and Coordinator, Centre of Advanced Study, Department of History, AMU, Aligarh for being always receptive and supportive.

The estabHshment of the Princes' Cha:nber as .a direct result of this visit, and the repercussions of the introduction of elements of Responsible Government on the states as foreshadowed by the illustrious authors of the Reforms Report are the main causes that have aroused an intelligent and keen interest in the discussion of this Problem and created a demand for constitutional rule as well as a desire for participation in all matters of common interests with the pe.:>ple of Bri:isb India on the part of the people of the Indian States. This demand has increased with years, and signs are not wanting to show us the intensity as well as the earnestness that have inspired it. The People of the States have begun organising themselves by various rueanR. The establishment of the Deccan States Conference, the Kathiawar States Political Conference, the Rajputena Seva Sangha, and such other activities v:orking for the Political rights of the people of groups of Indian ~:tates, as well as Conferences of the people of individual States such as the Sangli State's People's C~nference, the Bhor Political Conference, the Bhavnagar Praja Parishad, the Cutchi Praja Parishad and tile Hyderabad State People's Conference, Janjira State Subjects Cou1erence, Miraj State People's Conference and the !dar Praja Parishad are the clear manifestations of the New Spirit that is abroad.

There has been a wave of books in response, mainly coming from a tradition of writing that originated in peace studies, but has evolved into what we can now distinguish as a separate field—that of the study of the strategy of nonviolent protest, or, as it is sometimes described, ‘people power’. This literature aims to reveal the growing efficacy in modern times of nonviolent methods as against violent ones. It examines the strategies that have been adopted in such movements, with the emphasis being on discovering the most effective techniques and methods that can be applied in future campaigns.

  • 1. Letter to Bal Kalelkar
    1. LETTER TO BAL KALELKAR ARNI, September 2, 1927 CHI. BAL, I got your letter and liked it very much. I could not reply immediately for want of time. I shall answer two of your questions. A brahmachari sacrifices all pleasures merely through faith or in obedience to his parents or a custom. There is obedience in his sacrifice, but not knowledge. And if he cannot bring himself to make for ever that sacrifice, he has freedom to enjoy pleasures within limits after completing his studies. A sannyasi makes the same sacrifice knowingly and willingly. He does not and cannot keep it open for him to return to pleasures after having abjured them. Both types of sacrifice are very essential to individuals as well as to society. Now the second question. Non-violence means not harming anyone in thought, word or action out of ill will or selfishness. If we wish or do ill to any stranger in the interests of our parents, that is violence. We can see and prove with the help of our know ledge that wishing or doing ill benefits neither the world nor our parents. Hence I had written that it was my belief we dis cover nonviolence the moment we realize that its root is to be found in wishing well to the world as much as to ourselves. You will thus see that we can of course prove independently that one should wish well to the world, but if we abide by the dharma of non-violence the responsibility to wish well to the world as well devolves on us even in pursuance of that dharma.
