Trapp ABSTRACT This dissertation is about the people living at the Buduburam Liberian refugee camp in Ghana and how they navigate their position within a social hierarchy that is negotiated on a global terrain. The lives of refugees living in Ghana are constituted through vast and complex social relations that span across the camp, Ghana, West Africa and nations further afield such as the United States, Canada and Australia. The conditions under which these relations have developed and continue to unfold are mediated by structural forces of nation-state policies, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the international governing body for refugees, and the global political economy. Situated within the broader politics of protracted refugee situations and the question of why people stay in long-term camps, this research is a case study of one refugee camp and how its people access resources, build livelihoods and struggle with power. In particular, this dissertation uses concepts of the Liberian-American dream and the shadow colony to explore the historic and contemporary terms and circumstances ii through which Liberian refugees experience and evaluate migratory prospects and restrictions. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The production of this dissertation has been an outcome of many places and people. 2021 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 75 BY SENATORS PRICE AND SMITH A RESOLUTION To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Lloyd Price, American Rhythm and Blues artist. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the passing of Lloyd Price on May 3, 2021, at the age of eighty-eight; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Price, while a resident of Westchester County, New York, was born on March 9, 1933, and raised in Kenner, Louisiana; his mother, Beatrice Price, owned the Fish 'n' Fry Restaurant where he picked up lifelong interests in business and food from her; and WHEREAS, he received formal training on the trumpet and piano, sang in his church's gospel choir, and was a member of a combo in high school; and WHEREAS, Lloyd Price helped draw national attention to New Orleans' unique and burgeoning Rhythm and Blues (R&B) sound when he recorded his first No. 1 R&B 1952 hit "Lawdy Miss Clawdy"; and WHEREAS, he followed up with singles such as "Oooh-Oooh-Oooh", "Ain't It a Shame", and "Tell Me Pretty Baby", which reached Top 10 R&B between 1952-53; and WHEREAS, due to a stint in the United States Army in Korea, Lloyd Price didn't return to the charts until 1957 with the release of "Just Because" which reached Number three in R&B and became his first pop crossover at no. 29; this was the first release through Price's own KRC Records; and WHEREAS, with distribution through ABC Records, KRC issued several more Price classics: 1958's million-selling no. -

Over half its population has been displaced from their homes, including over 500,000 who are refugees in West Africa. All parties to the conflict have committed grave abuses of human rights against civilians, violating the humanitarian standards governing non- international armed conflict. During a visit to the Côte d'Ivoire from September 11-19, Holly Burkhalter, Washington Director of Human Rights Watch, interviewed newly-arrived refugees in several Ivorian villages in the area of Tabou, as well as refugees who fled in July to the Ivorian department of Guiglo.1 The following report describes abuses by the Liberian Army, the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), and the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL) as reported by the eyewitnesses. -

Soul Power, (2008, USA, Director Jeffrey Levy-Hinte) Review In 1974, as a warm-up to the legendary ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ heavy-weight title fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), a music festival took place that brought together some of the finest African and African-American artists of the 1970s. Soul Power is a record of this event, and the sheer scale of musical talent showcased within it - from B. B. King, Miriam Makeba and Bill Withers to Tabu Ley Rochereaux and James Brown – is enough to demand one’s immediate attention. For fans of black music, this film is essential viewing. For those unfortunate, aurally impoverished people not already familiar with these musicians, Soul Power is about the best audio-visual introduction available (along with Wattstax (1973), Mel Stuart’s film of the ‘black Woodstock’ festival the year before). And yet this film was very nearly not available at all. Every second of footage in Soul Power was shot thirty-six years ago by Leon Gast’s crew for what was to become When We Were Kings (1996), the academy-award winning documentary of the Ali- Foreman bout. Tragically, the images of the festival were dropped in order to maintain the King’s focus on the fight and its socio-cultural and political significance. In rescuing the images that constitute Soul Power, then, Jeffrey Levy-Hinte and co. do a service to the history of black music on film. This was no light undertaking. ‘Zaire ‘74’, as the festival was named, took place over three days. -

Opinions of contributors to the Journal do not necessarily reflect the policy of the organizations they represent or the Liberian Studies Association, publishers of the Journal. Manuscript Requirements Manuscripts intended for consideration should not exceed 25 typewritten, double-spaced pages, with margins of one-and-a-half inches. The page limit includes graphs, references, tables and appendices. Authors must, in addition to their manuscripts, submit a computer disk of their work, preferably in WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows. Notes and references should be placed at the end of the text with headings, e.g., Notes; References. Notes, if any, should precede the references. The Journal is published in June and December. Deadline for the first issue is February, and for the second, August. Manuscripts should include a title page that provides the title of the text, author's name, address, phone number, and affiliation. All works will be reviewed by anonymous referees. Manuscripts are accepted in English and French.
