Furthermore my deep-felt gratitude goes out to the many individuals and institutions, who helped me with my research in the province of Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo. The list is long and it is impossible to name all of them. However some of these individuals stand out and have gone beyond their capacities to accommodate me with their knowledge, time and assistance: The late Didier Kabobo Mwenda, Bosco’s son, who provided me with important information, many documents and photos. While continuing his father’s musical legacy he suddenly died in June 2009, at the age of 35. He will be terribly missed by many of us. I am greatly indebted to the hospitality of Bosco’s son, Murphy, his wife and children; Bosco’s daughters, Fé-Fé and Cathy Mwenda, who all welcomed me to their homes and treated me with great respect and generous hospitality. Stéphane Mwenda, Bosco’s brother, with whom I spent many, countless hours of interviews. He gave me some valuable materials as well; photos, documents and two old tapes. The journalist, Norbert Mulundu Wibyala (aka Nono), who spent hours at Radio Zenith and Radio Panos, telling me about Bosco, his music and the important role he played in Katanga. Mr. Wibyala accompanied me to Bunkeya to take photos of Bosco’s gravesite. He also introduced me to different clubs to listen to local guitarists. Special thanks goes to the historian, Professor Dr. Lwamba Bilonda, his lovely wife and family. Mr. Lwamba and I met every Friday morning at his office at UniLu (University of Lubumbashi). Through him I learned a lot about Congolese customs, history and music. He and his wife welcomed me to their home in Likasi, where I was treated royally. Antoine Mukunga, a journalist from RTNC (Radio et télévision national du Congo) was most generous with his time and information, accompanying me to different newspapers and other establishments, to the Park Hotel in Lubumbashi, to UniLu and on the difficult journey to Tshinsenda. Not to forget the honorable M’siri, Mwami Godefroid Munongo, Jr. Masuka, and his brother, Eric Kazembe Munongo, who both made it possible for me to visit the Bunkeya cemetery, where Jean Bosco Mwenda was put to rest.     ABSTRACT AFRICAN AND AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES HILL, ERNESS A. B.A. SPELMAN COLLEGE, 1998 REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST: THE CASE OF MOZAMBICAN ART. THE MACONDE AND THE SHETANI Advisor: Dr. Mustafah Dhada Thesis dated December, 2000 This thesis examines to what extent the shetani icon in Maconde Art has been elevated to the status of deity; and what powers it has been endowed with to transform the lives of its "worshippers." The investigation was based on the observation that, although not a recognized 'god' in the traditional Maconde form of worship, nor that of Mozambique, the shetani’s appearance in Mozambican art was consistent and abundant. The investigative approach used was a comparative analysis of three internationally known Mozambican artists, two of which are Maconde. The researcher found that with all three artists, the shetani was an obvious element in their artistic renderings and in each instance, their individual lives, though not unique, were charged with suffering and unhappiness. The conclusion drawn from this investigation suggests that, although created by a Maconde for the purpose of patronage, the shetani icon has become a 'deity' not only for the Maconde, but for Mozambicans, as well. While not 'worshipped' in the sense that Westerners worship, it has been endowed with powers that transform the lives of those who identify with it. At the very least, it has been endowed with the power to promote their artistic abilities with a view to catalyzing greater creativity. A Kipushi, une femme est décédée de suite d’électrocution par la foudre. • Selon les informations relayées par les partenaires, des tracasseries sont perpétrées par le chargé de l’antenne des Affaires humanitaires installé à Bukama à l’endroit des acteurs humanitaires notamment dans la réinstallation des sinistrés des inondations initiée par l’ONG locale AME. OCHA a saisi les autorités locales sur ce dossier. Grâce à cette intervention, MSF-B a pu poursuivre les travaux de forage des puits dans ce site. • De violentes manifestations organisées à Kolwezi par des creuseurs artisanaux se sont soldées par d’importants dégâts matériels dont l’incendie de quelques maisons des cadres de la GECAMINES. Ces manifestations font suite aux mesures prises par la GECAMINES portant interdiction de la vente, en dehors de cette entreprise, des minerais puisés dans sa concession. • Dans la nuit du 05/10/07, une femme a été violée par des hommes en uniforme au quartier Kalemuka, située à 7 km du centre ville de Lubumbashi.

This has mainly been through the artistes who have been crisscrossing between the two countries. So, when the Benga musical style developed in the sixties hitting the roof in the seventies and the eighties, contestations began over whether its source was Kenya or DRC. Indeed, it often happens that after a musical style is established in a primary source, it finds accommodation in other secondary places, which may compete with the originators in appropriating the style, sometimes even becoming more committed to it than the actual primary originators. This then begins to raise debates on the actual origin and/or ownership of the form. In situations where music artistes keep shuttling between the countries or regions like the Kenya and DRC case, the actual origin and/or ownership of a given musical practice can be quite blurred. This is perhaps what could be said about the Benga musical style. This paper attempts to trace the origins of the Benga music to the present in an effort to gain clarity on a debate that has for a long time engaged music pundits and scholars.
