Herodotus 2. 178 describes the Hellenion as the best-known and most visited sa nctuary in N aukracis. Its building involved th e joint efforts ofnine poleis. Petrie '" supposed the Hellenion ro be identical w ith the Great Temenos that he had discovered. In 1899, while digging to the north-east of the old excavation area, Hogarth"6 cliscovered buildings wlth several chambers and sherds bearing lllscriptions to individuru deities such as Aphrodite, ' Hcracles. Artemis. and ?Poseido n. but also to the collective gods of the Greeks. these fou nd in particular to the north-west of Well 35'" These buildings were surrounded by a temenos wall of mud-bricks. with a thickness Of7.6-9.0 m.; it ca n be seen on the map (Figure 5) near 34 to the west, 39 to th e south, and 67 to the east. 11 ft This area was excavated during th e 1899 campaign along a no rth-south length of 107 m. (350 ft.). It was possible to extend the area under investigation somewhat to the north in 1903. until work was hindered hy the water table whicb made it im­ possible to locate the nortbern boundary wall; it probably lies under what is today cultivated ground. Hogarth's identifIca tion, based upon inscriptions, of the buildings surro unded by a temenos wall as being the Hellenion will presumably be correct. 119 It is difficult to reconstruct the architectural development of the building complex, much having already suffered destructi on before digging commenced and deep standing water hampering th e excava ti on of the lowest layers. The oldest structures lay in the section which had suffered the greatest destruction, the pres umed so uth-west area of the HelJ enion. ' lJ As far as can be ascertained from the ground plan, the Hellenion is no typical Greek temple. Instead, the layout of the chamber< ca lls to mind the Graeeo-Egyptian temples in the Fayum, such as at Dionysias (Qasr Q erun), Karams (Kum Ushim) and Bacehias (Urnm el Atl) . ,,. Three phases of building may be identified , in each case of stone and mud-brick'" The buildings from the Ptolemaic period (phase JII) can be cl assified best, since their wall.~ survived in part to a height of r m. The vase fragments come from a period stretching from the third ce ntury Be down to Roman times.

The author focuses on the time and circumstances in which the view that the Atheni- ans were responsible for the Ionian colonisation emerged. He also examines whether there is any support in the sources for the opinion expressed by some historians that such a belief was already strong in the Archaic period. Key words: colonisation, Ionia, Athens, Euripides, Thucydides, Herodotus. Ionian migration is a familiar term in historiography. Certainly, there is an ongoing de- bate about the extent to which accounts about the Ionians’ arrival from Attica in Asia Minor refl ect the actual events at the turn of the 1st millennium BC. However, it is gener- ally accepted that as early as the 6th century BC the myth of the Ionian migration played a signifi cant role in forming a bond between Athens and the Greek cities in Asia Minor. This paper is an attempt to critically re-examine the problem. We will start our examina- tion by quoting a fragment of the Compendium of Roman History by Velleius Paterculus, who wrote at the turn of the eras: Subsequenti tempore magna vis Graecae iuventutis, abundantia virium, sedes quaeritans in Asiam se effudit.

    When Doves Drink: The Allied Duality of Dionysus and Apollo in Euripides’ Ion The element of duality in Euripides’ Ion has been addressed by scholars in a variety of contexts, and has been framed in the following ways: the dual aspects of divine and mortal characters (Kindt 2007), the play’s dueling genres of tragedy and comedy (Hunter 2011), and the duo of cultural identities displayed (Zeitlin 1989). While a fluctuation of divinity is recognizable in the appearances of gods on stage, such as Hermes and Athena, or off stage, such as Apollo, this presentation will investigate the role of another god, Dionysus, whose individual significance Zeitlin and Hunter have discussed at length. However, I propose to look at the role of Dionysus not as an individual figure, but as one forming a pair with Apollo in the Ion. I contend that Apollo and Dionysus cooperatively shape the underlying duality of the Ion, and I explore the manifestations of this duality with an examination of the play’s physical and spatial settings as representing symbolic ideas expressed by Euripides. Because the Ion is set in the temple of Apollo at Delphi but performed at the Theater of Dionysus in Athens, the audience experienced both locales simultaneously alongside their religious and mythological connotations. This paper illuminates how the cooperative relationship between Apollo and Dionysus in the Ion is physically suggested by the intimate closeness of Apollo’s oracle at Delphi and the torchlight rituals of Dionysus on Mount Parnassus (Ion 714). The ritual rotation between Apollo and Dionysus at Delphi, where Dionysus took over while Apollo was absent among the Hyperboreans in the winter, highlights the link between them (Burkert 1985).

    ELECTRYONE ΗΛΕΚΤΡΥΩΝΗ Deukalion and Pyrrha: Re-reading the Greek Flood myth Mercedes Aguirre Universidad Complutense, Madrid ABSTRACT: In recent years the most common way to interpret the Greek myth of the Flood has been through a comparative approach in the context of the relationship between Greek and Near Eastern cultures and the influences of the Near East on Greek traditions, literature, religion and myth. My article does not intend to re- examine the conclusions of this research, but, without diminishing the obvious importance of the comparative approach, to focus on the most 'canonical' Greek version of the myth and to highlight some aspects of it which in my view have not been so deeply explored. KEY-WORDS: flood, myth, Deukalion, Pyrrha, human origins Our evidence of the Flood myth in the Greek sources is very limited and not earlier than Pindar (Olympian 9. 62-71), although we have a possible reference in the Catalogue of Women (Fr.4 Merkelbach-West1). Fragments of the comic poet Epicharmos (from a play possibly entitled Pyrrha or Prometheus or even Deukalion) seem to mention the Flood, but the longest and most complete story is told by Apollodoros2. His account starts by presenting Deukalion, son of Prometheus, who married Pyrrha, daughter of Epimetheus and Pandora: “Prometheus had a son, Deukalion, who ruled the area around Phthia, and married Pyrrha, the daughter of Epimetheus and of Pandora, whom the gods had fashioned as the first woman”. Other Greek literary sources also allude to the couple Deukalion and Pyrrha as descendants of Prometheus and Pandora, for instance some fragments of the Catalogue of Women, a genealogical poem ascribed to Hesiod but transmitted mainly 1 Merkelback, R.- West, M.L.

    Beauty and Truth in Euripides’ Ion Of the extant plays of Euripides, Ion is one of the most striking in its emphasis on the majesty and significance of the earth and of the beauty of art (Mastronarde, 2013). The plot of Ion also revolves to a great degree on both truth and falsehood, and good and bad judgment, whether human or divine (see Melzer, 2006). Indeed, upon considering the actions of the major characters, it becomes clear that their ability to understand the significance of the land — particularly that of Athens— and to appreciate the aesthetics in and around the temple of Apollo at Delphi serves as an index of their moral and intellectual development. The parentless Ion, who lives at the temple, begins the play with lyrics (82-153) of the area’s beauty and related human creations. He excepts only the birds, swans and an eagle which he threatens to kill because they disturb the temple and rituals. The birds, however, are omens of the gods (the swans later die after consuming poison meant for him), and Ion’s lack of insight into this ambiguity is representative of his own situation and personality. Ion claims strong ethics (643-4 δίκαιον εἶ ναί μ’ ὁ νόμος ἡ φύσις θ’ ἅμα παρεῖ χε τῷ θεῶ) and uses fifth-century argumentation (see Conacher, 1998). He has an adolescent’s distaste for nuance. Confronted with Creusa’s confession that Apollo raped “a friend,” Ion decides to advise Apollo (436-7 νουθετητέος δέ μοι Φοῖ βος) that the gods risk emptying their temples in recompense for injustice (447 ἀδικίας).

    Chapter 4: Homer and The Iliad I. An Introduction to Homeric Epic A. The Cypria: The Background to The Iliad and the Trojan War The stories we'll review below once comprised an ancient Greek epic called The Cypria. Like all such works except Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey, this poem consists now of only a few random fragments. Termed as a group the epic cycle, these three along with several other long narrative poems told the complete story of the Trojan War, episode by episode. 1. The Plot of The Cypria The myth of the Trojan War begins long before the hostilities erupted. Like so many extended conflicts, it starts at a wedding, actually a bit before the nuptials themselves with the reason for the wedding, an oracle which proclaimed that the male who sired offspring by Thetis, the sea nymph, would procreate a son greater than himself. It was essentially a warning to Zeus not to dally with Thetis, as he was wont to do among lesser female deities and mortal women. To universal surprise and acclaim, Zeus saw the wisdom in this and managed to contain himself for once. He decided instead to give Thetis in marriage to a mortal. After all, who cares if she gives birth to a son who's greater than some mere mortal, right? A good idea, but it didn't turned out well. Zeus bestowed the sea nymph as bride on Peleus, a Greek king. The gods held a magnificent wedding for them on Olympus and invited everyone except Eris, the goddess of discord.
