When St. Paul's life was at stake, whether before a Jewish mob or a pagan king, he always told his experience. You will find in this book the life story of Reverend B. H. Lucas. Although he was deprived of a theological education God used him in bringing the glad message of salvation to thousands. It is a demonstration of what God can do in uplifting from a lower to a higher plane of living. Evangelist R. W. Chatfield * * * * * * * INTRODUCTION As an Evangelist I have been asked to write an introduction to this book. I have known the Rev. B. H. Lucas for over twenty-five years. He is one of God's good men and one of the Holiness Movement's good evangelists and pastors, winning thousands of souls to God. He is fearless, never compromising and a dynamic speaker. His messages are saturated with prayer; he is tender in spirit. Bro.. Lucas has been redeemed from a life of sin and is a miracle of divine grace.

LETTER FROM THE DEQ STAFF Between the time of our previous edition and the one currently in your hands, Detroit Electronic Quarterly and the Detroit music community at-large lost one of its most generous, encouraging advocates. And quite simply one of the best people ever to set foot within city limits. LaVell Williams made his transition on Saturday Oc- tober 27th, 2018, and did so in a manner reflective of how he chose to live every single day: listening to the music of his heroes, holding hands of those who loved him deeply, and selflessly comforting everyone with grace, love and care. He was a tireless, vocal advocate for numerous move- ments and a generous participant. It was a common sight to see LaVell volunteering at a registration table for AIDS Walk Detroit, helping program the Michigan Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, setting up equipment at the inaugural Detroit Electronic Music Festival, or working with families to present quilts at the AIDS Quilt Project in Hart Plaza. One of the great loves of his life was helping to pre- serve the music and history of the city he loved so much. In 2011, he became a founding member of the Detroit Sound Conservancy. It was not uncommon to see LaVell and Conservancy founder Dr. Carleton Gholz running from a jazz concert at Baker’s to a rock show at the Majestic to an afterhours in Eastern Mar- ket, often all on the same night’s calendar, enjoying each with equal enthusiasm. or, friend, companion, sounding board, punching bag, LaVell was probably best known to readers of this pub- Mother Superior, hall monitor, drama negotiator, refer- lication as a manager of the legendary record store ee, family member and deeply beloved.

  • Gender in Fusion Kugak: an Examination of Women’S Fusion Kugak Groups and Their Music Practices
GENDER IN FUSION KUGAK: AN EXAMINATION OF WOMEN’S FUSION KUGAK GROUPS AND THEIR MUSIC PRACTICES by Jungwon Kim Bachelor of Music, Kyungwon University, 1999 Bachelor of Music, Korea National University of Arts, 2004 Master of Arts, Seoul National University, 2008 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The DIETRICH School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts University of Pittsburgh 2012 UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH THE DIETRICH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCEINCES This thesis was presented by Jungwon Kim It was defended on March 26, 2012 and approved by Andrew N. Weintraub, PhD, Professor of Music Gabriella Lukacs, PhD, Assistant Professor of Anthropology Thesis Director: Adriana N. Helbig, PhD, Assistant Professor of Music ii Copyright © by Jungwon Kim 2012 iii GENDER IN FUSION KUGAK: AN EXAMINATION OF WOMEN’S FUSION KUGAK GROUPS AND THEIR MUSIC PRACTICES Jungwon Kim, M.A. University of Pittsburgh, 2012 Fusion kugak is defined as a contemporary and popular form of the traditional Korean music kugak. On the one hand, fusion kugak can appeal to researchers in terms of its musical style since it includes arrangements of Western music for traditional Korean instruments with non-Korean instruments accompanying; new compositions for ensembles combining traditional Korean instruments with non-Korean instruments; and collaboration between fusion kugak and other performing arts such as dance, martial arts, or acrobatics. On the other hand, as a cultural phenomenon in contemporary Korea, fusion kugak can be viewed from the perspective of gender, a social value system. However, which positions women are occupying in the field of fusion kugak; how women are playing their gender roles in their fusion kugak performances; whether women demonstrate their sexuality in their fusion kugak practices or not; and how women empower themselves in fusion kugak are all questions that current research has not yet explored.

  • Issue Number 31 February 1999
Gavin’s Woodpile – The Bruce Cockburn Newsletter Edited by Daniel Keebler Issue Number 31 February 1999 Song Pitching Is Paying Off For Bruce Cockburn From the January 30, 1999 issue of Billboard magazine, by Larry LeBlanc. Despite his worldwide status as a quality music artist and his reputation for literate and personalized songwriting, Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn tends to overlook his songwriting achievements. Cockburn wrote and performs the theme of Nelvana Production’s 2-year-old children’s TV show “Franklin,” broadcast worldwide. And Tara McLean sang his song “Pacing The Cage” in the Brett “Hitman” Hart documentary “Wrestling With Shadows,” which aired December 20, 1998, on the A&E channel in the U.S. Last year, Cockburn’s version of “Lord Of The Starfields” appeared in the Italian film “Radiofreccia,” the biography of singer Luciano Ligabue, as well as on the accompanying Warner Music Italia soundtrack. Canadian act The Rankins recorded his song “One Day I walk”; Steve Bell recorded “Can I Go With You”; and American singer Maria Muldaur titled her Telarc album “Southland Of The Heart” after Cockburn’s song. To date, there have been some 100 covers of Cockburn’s songs. The most covered are “If I Had A Rocket Launcher,” “One Day I Walk,” “Wondering Where The Lions Are,” and “Lovers In A Dangerous Time.” Among those who’ve recorded Cockburn’s tunes are Canada’s Barenaked Ladies, Barra MacNeils, Bob Wiseman, Skydiggers, and Anne Murray; Britain’s Ron Kavan and Oyster Band; Ireland’s Mary Coughlan; Sweden’s Mats Klingstrom; and U.S.

  • The Advance of English Poetry in the Twentieth Century
The Advance Of English Poetry in the Twentieth Century By William Lyon Phelps THE ADVANCE OF ENGLISH POETRY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY CHAPTER I SOME CONTRASTS HENLEY, THOMPSON, HARDY, KIPLING Meaning of the word "advance" the present widespread interest in poetry the spiritual warfare Henley and Thompson Thomas Hardy a prophet in literature The Dynasts his atheism his lyrical power Kipling the Victorian his future possibilities Robert Bridges Robert W. Service. Although English poetry of the twentieth century seems inferior to the poetry of the Victorian epoch, for in England there is no one equal to Tennyson or Browning, and in America no one equal to Poe, Emerson, or Whitman, still it may fairly be said that we can discern an advance in English poetry not wholly to be measured either by the calendar and the clock, or by sheer beauty of expression. I should not like to say that Joseph Conrad is a greater writer than Walter Scott; and yet in The Nigger of the Narcissus there is an intellectual sincerity, a profound psychological analysis, a resolute intention to discover and to reveal the final truth concerning the children of the sea, that one would hardly expect to find in the works of the wonderful Wizard. Shakespeare was surely a greater poet than Wordsworth; but the man of the Lakes, with the rich inheritance of two centuries, had a capital of thought unpossessed by the great dramatist, which, invested by his own genius, enabled him to draw returns from nature undreamed of by his mighty predecessor. Wordsworth was not great enough to have written King Lear; and Shakespeare was not late enough to have written Tintern Abbey.
