University SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN THE WESTERN CAPE USING AN INTEGRATED DIGITAL ARCHIVE NICHOLAS WILTSHIRE Town Cape of Thesis presented for the degree of Master of Science In the Department of Archaeology University of Cape Town August 2011 University Abstract This thesis presents the digital amalgamation of eleven collections spanning six decades of archaeological research in the south-western Cape of South Africa. The oldest recordings were made in the 1950s by Hym Rabinowitz, Percy Sieff and ‘Ginger’ Townley Johnson while the most recent reports were contributed by members of the eastern Cederberg Rock Art Group (eCRAG). To date over 5100 sites have been captured. An archaeological database designed in 2005 at the University of Cape Town was modified to incorporate the fields required by the various collections before the data input and scanning of the collections took place. Each report was fully typed so that information could be indexed. Upon completion of the archiving work, a new table of rock art analyses was added to the database in order to produce layers suitable for interrogation on a Geographical Information System. Various applications of this database were explored in both the research and heritage management spheres. Given the high volume andTown broad nature of the data assembled in the archive only preliminary forays into potential research questions were possible. Despite these limitations, the integration of photographic, spatial and written recordings enabled the identification of distributional anomalies that are nowCape being investigated in more detail. A number of other research projects have recently started using this database as a starting point. Undoubtedly the relevance of the information containedof in this archive will continue to grow as other uses for the database are explored. Besides the spatial analyses completed in this thesis, over 300 new rock art sites have been added to the body of archaeological knowledge and work on papers related to these findings is ongoing. The idea to take the digital archive beyond the starting blocks in 2005 has long been in our sights and it is extremely satisfying to have finished this archive. We clarify the stratigraphic integrity of SAM 42160 and confirm its Middle Stone 18 Age provenience. We find evidence that indicates the point was hafted and partially coated 19 in an adhesive substance. Internal fractures are consistent with stresses occasioned by high- 20 velocity, longitudinal impact. SAM 42160, like its roughly contemporaneous counterpart, 21 farther north at Sibudu Cave, likely functioned as a hafted arrowhead. An intense academic debate surrounding Neandertal behavioural and cognitive capacities is fuelled by methodological advancements, archaeological reappraisals, and theoretical shifts. Recent re-dating of prehistoric rock art in Spain, to a time when Neandertals could have been the creators, has further fuelled this debate. This thesis aims to address the underlying causes responsible for this debate and investigate the archaeological signifiers of art and symbolism. I then examine the archaeological record of El Castillo, which contains some of the oldest known cave paintings in Europe, with the objective of establishing possible evidence for symbolic and artistic behaviour in Neandertals. The case of El Castillo is an illustrative example of some of the ideas and concepts that are currently involved in the interpretation of Neandertals’ archaeological record. As the dating of the site layer at El Castillo is problematic, and not all materials were analyzed during this study, the results of this research are rather inconclusive, although some evidence of probable symbolic behaviour in Neandertals at El Castillo is identified and discussed.

The earliest specimen of rock paintings is located at Malvi in the Musa Khel Tehsil of Lora Lai District, Balochistan. There are nine rock shelters at this site which depict pre- historic and pre-Buddhist paintings. But what may be surprising is that both petroglyphs and pictographs have been found in the Gadap Tehsil of Karachi while rock carvings have been found at Lahaut (Nain Mol), Rahim Bakhsh Gabol and Maher in Gadap Tehsil. The rock carvings at Rahim Bakhsh Village are engraved on bedrock and include carvings of geometric designs, shoe prints and arrows. Apart from the petroglyphs at the Rahim Bakhsh rock-art site, one also finds both petroglyphs and pictograms in the Maher Valley. Petroglyphs are found at Baithi Lak (pass) near the Lahaut rock shelter. This is the main Lak through which people enter into the valley of Maher. There are many petroglyphs on the sandstone rock wall with the majority of these engravings being geometric designs. Painting of the so-called Maher Deity Rock paintings are located in a rock shelter at Lahaut in Maher Valley, situated about 60 km north of Karachi.

Here, we present an overview of archaeological sites in southwestern Germany, which yielded remains of ochre. We focus on the artifacts belonging exclusively to anatomically modern humans who were the inhabitants of the cave sites in the Swabian Jura during the Upper Paleolithic. The painted limestones from the Magdalenian layers of Hohle Fels Cave are a particular focus. We present these artifacts in detail and argue that they represent the beginning of a tradition of painting in Central Europe. These cells are a requirement for trichromatic vision and hence, a requirement for the perception of the color red. The capacity for trichromatic vision dates back about 35 million years, within our shared evolutionary lineage in the Catarrhini subdivision of the higher primates (Jacobs, 2013, 2015).
