PERIPHERAL VISIONS: SPANISH WOMEN’S POETRY OF THE 1980S AND 1990S DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Tracy Manning Muñoz, B.A., M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Professor Stephen J. Summerhill, Adviser Approved by Professor Rebecca Haidt _____________________________ Adviser Professor Elizabeth Davis Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese Copyright by Tracy Manning Muñoz 2006 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the use of vision (the sense of sight) and visuality (social seeing) in four women poets of the 1980s and 1990s in Spain: Ana Rossetti, Maria- Mercè Marçal, Aurora Luque, and Montserrat Abelló. All four combine the use of vision and visuality with questions of gender performance and identity as a challenge to normative and culturally constructed gender(ed) behavior. The very fact that the majority of the lyric voices in their poems does not have a defined gender, as many of the people that they view do not, permits them to move from subjectivation to subjectification. Through the manifestation of gender “difference,” the various lyric voices leave behind their status as marginalized members of Western gendered culture. Although not all of the lyric voices are ungendered or ambiguously gendered, sufficient questions of, and challenges to normative gendered behavior exist to warrant including these four poets in the same study, despite their ostensible differences. The theoretical framework for this study focuses on Freudian ideas of voyeurism and exhibitionism as well as pleasurable and unpleasurable looking (scopophilia and scopophobia), Foucauldian ideas of power, and Lacanian ideas of the mirror stage and subjectivity.

  • Paris, New York and Madrid: Picasso and Dalí Before Great International Exhibitions 1
Paris, New York and Madrid: Picasso and Dalí before Great International Exhibitions 1 Dalí’s attitude toward Picasso began with admiration, which later became competition, and finally a behavior that, still preserving some features of the former two, also included provocative and exhibitionist harassment, simulated or expressed rivalry, and recognition. As we shall see, this attitude reached its climax at the great international exhibitions. On the other hand, the painter from Málaga always stayed away from these provocations and kept a completely opposite, yet watchful and serene behavior toward the impetuous painter from Figueres. Paris 1937, New York 1939 and Madrid 1951: these three occasions in these three major cities —where confrontation between these two great Spanish painters was well-known— are good examples of the climaxes in their confrontation. These international events show their relative divergences, postures, commitments and ways of conceiving art, as well as their positions in relation to Spain. After examining the origins of their relationship, which began in 1926, these three spaces and times shall guide our analysis and discussion of this suggestive relationship. Young Dalí: From his admiration of Picasso to his artistic promotion in Madrid, Paris and New York The cultural centers of Madrid, Paris and New York were particularly important in Picasso’s and Dalí’s artistic influence, as well as scenes of their agreements and disagreements. On the one hand, Picasso had already lived in Madrid at the beginning of the 20th century, while Paris had then become the main scene of his artistic development, and New York played a relevant role in his promotion.

  • The Terrible Embrace of the Incipient Baroque: Textually Enacting the Union of Crowns
The Terrible Embrace of the Incipient Baroque: Textually Enacting the Union of Crowns John Slater University of California, Davis Abstract: Portugal and Spain were ruled by a single monarchy from 1580 to 1640; the images of encircling and embracing that accompanied Castilian celebrations of the Union of Crowns indicate that new language accompanied the new political reality. This new language became the idiom of an incipient baroque, a regime of representation that rendered perceptible the particular aspirations of a universal monarchy. Through successive Castilian translations and adaptations, seminal Portuguese works crisscrossed the Hapsburg empire, enclosing the globe in a textual embrace. Textual enclosure became one of the means by which the Hapsburg empire was enacted. Keywords: baroque, Union of Crowns, Moluccas and Banda Islands, Garcia de Orta, João de Barros, Laurel de Apolo. The Iberian Union (1580-1640) put an end to the contentious issue of control over the spice trade in the Moluccas and Banda Islands of the Pacific, a matter that “preoccupied European diplomacy” for decades during the sixteenth cen- tury (Brotton 121). As Ricardo Padrón neatly summarizes, “upon the arrival of Magellan’s ships in the Spice Islands, Castile’s westward expansion across half the world met up with Portugal’s eastward drive across the other half” (“A Sea of Denial” 11). In seventeenth-century Spain, however, this meeting point of imperial enterprises—where Castilian “expansion” met Portuguese “drive”— 12 (2014): 191-211 | © 2014 by the American Portuguese Studies Association Studies Portuguese the American 12 (2014): 191-211 | © 2014 by was more often represented as fingers interlocking at the terminus of a global embrace than a point at which legal and territorial claims came into conflict.
