Page Two THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25) The Seven Essenal Elements of Parish Life constantly interrelate, each nurturing and supporng the other with the communal celebraon of Sunday Eucharist at the center. Years ago, when vinyl record meant technology and technology meant RCA; in 1976 the Steve Miller Band sang its hit: “Fly Like An Eagle.” Like a lot of songs I can’t get through most of the lyrics without scrambling them. “Time keeps on slippin’ into the future” it began then “I want to fly like an eagle, let my spirit carry me” but these often forgotten gems follow: “Feed the babies who don’t have enough to eat, shoe the children with no shoes on their feet, house the people livin’ in the street, oh, oh, there’s a solution. Fly through the revolution.” The revolution is ongoing! It’s part of what we call being not only a good human but being a Catholic Christian. We care for each other because we are good human beings. We serve the other because Christian moral behavior demands that we make choices to imitate Christ’s love for oth- ers. Realize too that God helps us – always showing up filled with enough to make left-overs, many times unacknowledged. A triptych is a three paneled work of art – center-piece with two sides usually hinged together. The Catholic parishes of Fullerton: the oldest founded in 1912, St. Mary in the center of our little town, on the west side, founded in 1958, is the parish of St. Philip Benizi, a Servite friar, and ministering to east Fullerton founded in 1965 is St. Juliana, a Servite sister. An interesting triptych! The Servites – Servants of Mary – are Servants of the Virgin Moth- er, Mary is central, both Juliana and Philip are on either side. Sunday, August 23 is the Feast of St. Philip Benizi. He was known as a person of peace and compassion, a person of service and charity, self-effacing and penitent. A person of pure heart filled with apostolic zeal and wise in the wisdom of the Cross. In all, he was a model of the faithful Servant of Mary. Philip was between the Seven Holy Founders, the First Fathers of the Order, and the generations which follow to this day. By unanimous vote Philip followed Fra Manettus (one of the Seven) in the line of Superior Generals. As general of the Order, he was traveling to Germany when we came to a place where there was neither bread nor water. He and his traveling companion were quite desperate. Philip prayed “ Lord God, almighty Father, you provided nourish- ment for your people and you never cease to feed all your creatures. I beg you to give food to this child of yours, the servant of your most blessed Mother.” We are told on finishing his prayer Philip looked around a hut where he found, put there by Providence, some very white bread and a jar of water. This was the first of two such times God responded to Philip’s intercession for bread and water. Philip’s prayer was heard! Feed, shoe, and house. The necessity to provide continues. We pray, God answers our pray- ers. On Sunday morning, August 23 following the 7:30 and 9:00 Masses the Servite Secular Community will offer blessed St. Philip bread and water to you, our community. May it remind all of us that God provides for us. May it di- rect us to go from here and provide for others. May the ministry of the Servite Secular Community of St. Juliana be a model for all of us. Would you consider joining them as they witness to the Servite Community in our parish? The call to imitate Christ and serve is fulfilled in many ways. The Secular Servite Community is truly a brilliant way to conver- sion and holiness in the Servite model. Feel welcome to contact Mr. Dave Lazaro or me for more information about the Servite Secular Community in our parish.
