  • Constitutive Variation in Hepatic Expression of Porcine Innate Immune Genes Associated with Novel Promoter Polymorphisms
Constitutive Variation in Hepatic Expression of Porcine Innate Immune Genes Associated with Novel Promoter Polymorphisms By Heindrich Nicolaas Snyman A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Science Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Heindrich Nicolaas Snyman, November, 2013 ABSTRACT CONSTITUTIVE VARIATION IN HEPATIC EXPRESSION OF PORCINE INNATE IMMUNE GENES ASSOCIATED WITH NOVEL PROMOTER POLYMORPHISMS Heindrich N. Snyman Advisor University of Guelph, 2013 Dr. Brandon Lillie Infectious diseases are an important factor limiting production, growth performance, economics and animal welfare in the global swine industry. Numerous pathogenic, environmental and host genetic factors contribute to infectious disease susceptibility, including defects in the innate immune system. The secreted, membrane-bound and intracellular proteins of the innate immune system are critical components in the defense against infectious pathogens, especially in young pigs. Previous studies have identified a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the innate immune genes of pigs, some of which are more frequent in pigs with economically important infectious diseases such as enteritis, serositis and pneumonia. Additional novel genetic differences (SNPs, insertions, deletions or other genetic variations) that alter the expression and/or function of important resistance-conferring innate immune proteins could, together with previously identified markers, form the basis for future development of genetic selection strategies aimed at increasing innate disease resistance in pigs. In this thesis, genome-wide expression analysis and DNA sequencing were used to screen for polymorphisms that were associated with decreased or increased expression of selected innate immune genes in the liver of healthy market weight pigs.

  • Set-Theoretic Methods for the Social Sciences
Set-Theoretic Methods for the Social Sciences A Guide to Qualitative Comparative Analysis Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and other set-theoretic methods distinguish themselves from other approaches to the study of social phenomena by using sets and the search for set relations. In virtually all social science !elds, statements about social phenomena can be framed in terms of set relations, and using set- theoretic methods to investigate these statements is therefore highly valuable. "is book guides readers through the basic principles of set-theory and then on to the applied practices of QCA. It provides a thorough understanding of basic and advanced issues in set-theoretic methods together with tricks of the trade, so#ware handling, and exercises. Most arguments are introduced using examples from existing research. "e use of QCA is increasing rapidly and the application of set theory is both fruitful and still widely mis- understood in current empirical comparative social research. "is book provides the comprehensive guide to these methods for researchers across the social sciences. Carsten Q. Schneider is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and Founding Director of the Center for the Study of Imperfections in Democracies at Central European University, Hungary. • A3344 Publication Title: Membership Applications to the NS-Frauenshcaft
Publication Number: A3344 Publication Title: Membership Applications to the NS-Frauenshcaft/Deutsches Frauenwerk Date Published: n.d. MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS TO THE NS-FRAUENSHCAFT/DEUTSCHES FRAUENWERK Introduction Berlin Document Center (BDC) biographic records include membership information for approximately 3.5 million members of the NS Frauenschaft and Deutsches Frauenwerk (National Socialist Women’s Organization), which directed the activities of various women’s organizations in Nazi Germany. Included among the latter were professional organizations, NSDAP women’s auxiliary formations, and humanitarian and educational groups during the 1931-45 period. As with other ‘front’ organizations, NSDAP membership was not required, so that many individuals documented here are not found elsewhere among BDC biographic collections. The Records are organized in two series, reproduced on 2,418 microfilm rolls. The earliest Frauenschaft organizations came into existence in October 1931 as NSDAP women’s auxiliaries. After Hitler came to power in January 1933, the NS-Frauenschaft served as the means by which existing women’s organizations were brought into line with National Socialist principles. Under the direction of Reichsfauenführerin Gertrud Scholtz-Klink, it specialized in political indoctrination of such varied organizations as the Reichsgemeinschaft Deutscher Hausfauen (Reich Community of German Housewives), Bund Deutscher Ärztinnen (League of German Female Physicians), and others. Its organization paralleled that of the Nazi Party, with subordinate

  • Dover Township Trustees Records
Dover Township Trustees Records The following is a transcription by Denise L. Rosenbaum, MMC, Clerk of Council for the city of Westlake, Ohio, completed in 2020 of four volumes of handwritten Dover township trustees records from 1831-1880 listed below, which are part of the collection at the Western Reserve Historical Society. Great care was taken to replicate the layout and formatting of the originals, including spelling errors and some random ink marks and stains, with explanations and/or corrections of some names [in brackets] to facilitate research. The spelling of names is based on how they appear in the list of Dover township officials linked below. Illegible or faded text that could not be deciphered was left blank and/or highlighted. Bookmarks were placed at meeting dates and election results for ease of location. Copies of the originals as well as the transcriptions are available in the Council office at Westlake City Hall and on the city’s website at www.cityofwestlake.org. From these volumes, a list of Dover Township Officials 1831-1880 was compiled which supplements and clarifies some discrepancies in the list of Government Officials of Dover ~ Westlake, Ohio 1811-2011 that was published for Westlake’s bicentennial. An addendum to the latter based on these clarifications updates that list. Please contact Denise L. Rosenbaum at 440-617-4053 or [email protected] with any questions. COMPARATIVE POLITICAL RESEARCH MA course, Winter 2015, 4 CEU credits, 8 ETCS Instructor Carsten Q. Schneider, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Head of Department Department of Political Science, Central European University FT 903 E-mail: [email protected] Tel.: 327 3086 Classes TBA Office Hours TBA Teaching Assistant Bruno de Paula Castanho e Silva Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations, CEU E-mail: [email protected] Tel: +36 302790991 TA Office Hours ??? Course Description and Learning Outcomes The aims of this course consist in making students familiar with the basic rules of doing comparative research and introducing the most influential approaches and salient topics in comparative political science. The course, thus, will help students to evaluate the methodological merits of those political science publications that use a comparative approach, to recognize which intellectual tradition they belong to, and to design their own comparative research strategy. During the course work, students are asked to write small position papers, several written exercises, to actively participate during in-class discussions, and to prepare in-class presentations. The position papers are expected to help develop the ability to synthesize the information gathered from the mandatory readings, determine a focus point, and to develop a coherent line of argumentation. The written exercises are expected to improve the ability to generate logical, plausible, and persuasive arguments, to compare and contrast, and to derive theoretical conclusions from comparative empirical observations. The emphasis on in-class participation and in-class presentations is meant to foster the skills of expressing informative reflections 'on the spot' and to decrease potential fears of speaking in Carsten Q.
