RESTRICTED GENERAL AGREEMENT ON ~ H^^ K n^ 7 novembre 1966 TARIFFS AND TRADE "'"^Limited Distribution TARIFF INFORMATION AVAILABLE IN THE SECRETARIAT -, The secretariat receives, in the course of ixs normal work, numerous requests for information relative to existing tariff rates for particular products in ; different countries > Lately the volume of inquiries has grown very considerably as a result of the information facilities put at the disposal of the developing countries in general through the International Trade Centre. The Kennedy Round has further made it necessary to have, at the disposal of the delegates, up-to- date data on tariff rates of participating countries. Unfortunately, the secretariat is not always kept informed by the contracting parties of changes in these matters. In relation to this, attention is drawn to the provision of Article X of the General Agreement. Annexed to this paper is a list of tariffs and their latest modifications available in the secretariat. The information, as noted there, is drawn mainly from thre2 sources : national editions of the customs tariffs, the publications of the International Customs Tariff Bureau in Brussels and the Deutches Handels-Archiv. Contracting parties are requested to submit to the secretariat, as soon_as possible, any information relating to their tariff which is not, at_present, available in the secretariat. -. • Constitutive Variation in Hepatic Expression of Porcine Innate Immune Genes Associated with Novel Promoter Polymorphisms
Constitutive Variation in Hepatic Expression of Porcine Innate Immune Genes Associated with Novel Promoter Polymorphisms By Heindrich Nicolaas Snyman A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Science Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Heindrich Nicolaas Snyman, November, 2013 ABSTRACT CONSTITUTIVE VARIATION IN HEPATIC EXPRESSION OF PORCINE INNATE IMMUNE GENES ASSOCIATED WITH NOVEL PROMOTER POLYMORPHISMS Heindrich N. Snyman Advisor University of Guelph, 2013 Dr. Brandon Lillie Infectious diseases are an important factor limiting production, growth performance, economics and animal welfare in the global swine industry. Numerous pathogenic, environmental and host genetic factors contribute to infectious disease susceptibility, including defects in the innate immune system. The secreted, membrane-bound and intracellular proteins of the innate immune system are critical components in the defense against infectious pathogens, especially in young pigs. Previous studies have identified a number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the innate immune genes of pigs, some of which are more frequent in pigs with economically important infectious diseases such as enteritis, serositis and pneumonia. Additional novel genetic differences (SNPs, insertions, deletions or other genetic variations) that alter the expression and/or function of important resistance-conferring innate immune proteins could, together with previously identified markers, form the basis for future development of genetic selection strategies aimed at increasing innate disease resistance in pigs. In this thesis, genome-wide expression analysis and DNA sequencing were used to screen for polymorphisms that were associated with decreased or increased expression of selected innate immune genes in the liver of healthy market weight pigs.

  • Overview of Medieval and Renaissance Italian Names
Overview of Medieval and Renaissance Italian Names by Signora Giata Magdalena Alberti The first major step for a living history participant to assume a persona is to choose a name. An understanding of the reasons people called themselves or became known by a certain name is useful when attempting to understand the cultural norms of a historic time and place. This paper will provide an overview of the origins and development in Italian naming practices from 800 AD to 1600 AD. GIVEN NAMES In the Middle Ages people regarded the meaning of names and believed "nomina sunt consequentia rerum" (names are the consequences of things, Dante, Vita Nuova VIII). Naming practices follow this logic. Names in Italy from 800 AD to 1600 AD were given based on the prestige of Catholic saints, literary protagonists and classical Greek or Roman icons (Fucilla 9). Evidence of this can be traced back to the days of Charlemagne. In the 9th Century Charlemagne united Western Europe as the Holy Roman Empire. Once he established religious control via the Roman Catholic Church the influence of invaders' (Arabs, Turks, Franks, etc.) names in Italy ebbed. Names became more standardized and religious, Greek, Germanic, and Latin names can be clearly identified. Popular Italian religious names from Latin such as Giorgio, Alessandro, Domenico, and Filippo are popular down to this day. Names from Greek, such as Pietro, Maddalena, and Giovanni, and from Germanic origin such as Rodolfo and Guido are now inextricably linked to Italian culture the world over. Classical names from Latin such as Laura, Augusto, and Silvia have also come down to us through the Italians (Cole 24).
